  • This amp had a mountain of problems to deal with!
Our main issues with the amp were old worn filter caps still in the circuit from an incomplete cap job, there were bare parts of the heater wires laying on the chassis, two bad output tubes that had a terrible hum, potentiometers on the front panel that had dead spots, a bad output tube socket, bad standby switch, and there were some other mods someone had done along the way that we needed to reverse.
I returned all the modified components to the stock values of the amp, added back the treble peaking circuits that were cut, and shielded the input wires of V1A and V1B to aid in it's quiet operation.
All in all, I think the amplifier sounds great. It has it's similarities to other classic guitar amplifiers.
If these can be found on the cheap I'd say it would be a good deal but be prepared that these could possibly need a ton of work to get them running right.
Let me know what you think in the comments.
    Peace!

I had the MKX Cub 50 modded and PT swapped to US voltage from European voltage. The tech did a decent job, but your work looks far superior. The tech took off the cover for the filter caps and used the blue cans so the cover wouldn’t go back on. If you were local, I’d definitely take it you for service.

Hell yeah! Glad to see you back - and with one of my favorite amps too. I've got the mkx50 combo and it's working well enough, but I've been avoiding a cap job due to the amount of butchery necessary. Dude still makes amps under the NOVIK moniker - been thinking about messaging him to see if he's got new caps that are the same form factor. Also, if this thing ends up on your bench again, hit up the Red Bear FB group. I'm pretty sure one of the guys had replacement power and standby switches.

Never heard of this amp. A guy just called me asking if I could repair his. That search led me to this video. Well done brother.

Hi just found your video I’m your newest subscriber. Great video, awesome rebuild job.I bought one of these dirt cheap. It is been modified, Russian preamp tubes were changed to 12ax7 an output tubes converted to EL 34. Some of the caps were changed to values closer to a JCM 800. Replacing the pots will be a big improvement for sure, the originals are pretty bad. I have a jcm also. In my opinion this amp sounds better, you could for the most part follow a JCM 800 schematic if anyone needs

Alpha pots are likely the most cost effective at the moment. The values you need can be purchased from tubesandmore.com. It's not difficult to swap them out, just take detailed notes of the pot values and where the wires are coming from. Take pictures as you go.
