  • KTM have just updated and re-released the KTM 790 Adventure. The ADV bike has been refreshed and given a new lease of life to compete against other mid-sized entry level ADV bikes like Yamaha's Tenere 700. Built in China, this promises to be significantly cheaper than the previous version, while having many of the 890 Adventures features. But where will it fit in the KTM lineup? And will we see it in North America? Does this spell the end for the KTM 890 Adventure?

    Owning a 2020 790 Adv R, it makes me smile that it’s back! I found it painful to see my bike was outdated in no time and often wondered if I should have gone w the T7. Based on my experience, I am not sure the bike will be worse of being built in China as the build quality in Austria wasn’t that great anyway. But still love the bike as is.

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  Рік тому +4

      Yes I remember being surprised that it was here and then gone so quickly. I rode one back to back with the T7 and felt it handled better than the T7 (not top heavy), but never considered getting the subsequent 890 (900cc off road...it's excessive IMHO). Interesting what you say about the Austrian build quality. If they can maintain or even improve the build quality in China, then, given the reduced cost, I'm sure it will sell. Cheers.

    This thing looks the tits compared to the "old" 790, I dig it! Pricing in Belgium is €100 more expensive than the T7, but KTM offer discounts where as Yamaha dealers leave zero room for negotiation. You can get a very well equipped 790 for the price of a standard T7. As a T7-fanboy, I'm tempted...

  • @stefansporri7387

    From my point of view, two reasons speak for this motorcycle.
    In Europe, a motorcycle for a novice rider may not have more power than 35 KW. After two years, you can unthrottle the bike again. That's why KTM produced the 890 L for Europe with 70 instead of 77 KW. The 70 KW can be throttled down to 35 KW, the 77 KW cannot. For this there is now the 790 which you can also reduce to the power of 35 KW.
    The second reason is the price and the competitiveness with other brands. The Yamaha T7 costs 10,950 Swiss francs without taxes in Switzerland. The new KTM 790, on the other hand, costs only 10,200 Swiss francs without taxes. (11'758 USD Yamaha / 10'952 USD KTM) With KTM, however, the customer has the option to upgrade the machine if he wants to. Cruise control, for example, can't even be had at extra cost on the Yamaha T7, Honda Transalp and Suzuki V Strom 800. For me a must on a touring bike. Would I buy one? As a BMW fan and no Offroad rider of an F700GS, KTM has been out of the question for me for quality reasons. With this machine, however, I could become weak, because I believe that the Chinese will do everything to produce high quality to be able to conquer the markets. And it costs here in Switzerland fully equipped about 1'000 USD less than a BMW F850GS.

    2:26-3:02 Back in 2021 when the 890 was new they also increased crankshaft mass by 20% to make the engine perform better/smoother at low rpm and the reviewers praised this change because it helps alot in slow situations (harder to stall). So i dont think its any less agile then the 890's. My dealership will get a demo bike in april and i cant wait to test it.

    I've had bad experiences with Chinese built motorcycles in the past and having "KTM standards" attached, especially lately, does not add any confidence for me. I wouldn't touch this bike, luckily I live in the US and don't have to. 😉

    I got a 2022 890 Adv standard, great bike! If an equivalent 790 would be cheaper (under 10000EUR mark) then I would have bought it.
    CFMoto does a lot of things and we have already a number of bikes using parts from China, including Honda and BMW who have engines built in China.

    790/ 199kg(2023) vs 890/196kg(2023) ....... the only good side on the 790 is probably the price..... but if you didn't take the price in consideration.... 890 are better choice.... for me

      Yes, bulky - 10kgs more than the original. The price hasn't been released yet, but if you look at the Duke 790vs 890R, you're looking at 10.2K versus 14K. If they can undercut the Tenere 700 by 2 grand, that would be mighty for them. Cheers.

      My thoughts exactly. I did pre order the 23 890R. It makes sense. I do think there is a bias of where 790s are being build and it makes sense for a business point of view. But a few $k isn’t enough of a decrease for me go for a softer heavier made in China bike. I’ve been Austrian Orange since ‘07 and happy.

      Agree: it's the last thing I expected to see, but...I haven't heard anything, but if I were a KTM marketer, I'd sell my stock of 890 Adventures and slip in the 790ADV, should take about 2 seasons... With the 990 coming out soon, an 890ADV-R, but nothing smaller except the single cylinder 650, there is a hole that I guess the 790 may fill without too much R & D cost.

    Brilliant move in my opinion. The 790 will appeal to a massive audience and offers good value for money. I'm eagerly waiting for the release myself! Pricewise the standard 890 sits in the same category as the Tiger 900 Rally, Africa Twin 1100 and Ducati Desert X. Stiff competition and better options at this price point, so best to just pay a grand more and go for the 890 ADV R. The 790 is going to sell like hot cakes

    I don’t know what exactly is the reason but your guess makes sense; market repositioning. I currently have a 890 Adv S, and I don’t want to be somehow downgraded when I’ll go for a change. If the 790 is to replace the 890, then I might consider to go find the successor else where. The 890 Adv R is a bit to high for me. If the driver to return to the 790 is to lower down the price, it means that they’ll save on the production cost, and probably also on the specs. Why can’t KTM keep the 890 at the right price...?

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  Рік тому

      They may well keep the 890 adv. I think the 790 is very close to being the same bike though, although priced cheaper and 100cc less it's there best short term solution to the success of the T7 and Tuareg.

  • @gillesgenete9598

    Thanks for informations and thoughts. I thought the new 790 was a marketing action to counter Tuareg660 and updated Tenere700 in the 12000 price range, while 890R us aiming at DesertX in the 16000 price range. Then the 890 standard is due to be the orange version of blue Norden901 in the 14500 price range. It looks like CFmoto will offer a new CF800 Explore, using the 790engine and their 800MT platform, with Adv capacities, again to counter Tuareg and Tenere. Chinese manufacturing can be excellent when proper mfg investments are mades under western engineering supervision and enhanced quality control.

    If its priced about the same as a T7 it would surely be high on my list to consider as my new bike.
    Obviously the big word is reliability here, if its as reliable as the T7 and most likely the new Transalp its a winner bike.
    I certainly hope so, i love the design, fuel capacity, weight carried low down, protection by design, and fingers crossed if they managed to make it reliable i would go for it.
    Made in China is no bother most things are today, if its designed for reliability, and the Chinese plant is well ran its as reliable as anything else.
    I dont care about politics, but bikes so I could not care less for such reasons.

    Thanks for the interesting comments. It makes sense to drop the 890 for the new 790 for the price conscious and keep the 890 R as the real off-road deal. I personally ride on three continents which evokes different considerations. Also, with 192cm (6'3") I m not height challanged. I keep my 790 R in Germany as a relative lightweight off-road oriented adventure bike. My highly modified 1190 R serves as a sports tourer in Europe. I am still undecided which of both I will use for my upcoming adventure in France, Spain and Northern Morocco. What do you think is the better choice?
    This all looks l different deep down in Africa. I spend 2022 in Namibia and put more than 20 thousand Km on my Tenere T7. I did not need the power of the KTM in this terrain, but I needed the unmatched reliability being in extremely remote areas riding solo. In hindsight, the best choice. In Texas, I have my 2010 Ducati Multistata 1200 S as a sports tourer to eat the distances. This still allows me light off-road excretions in the American Southwest. I plan to add a KTM 690 that I can haul on a rack on my old and trusted 1976 Cadillac convertible. I can camp in a home base and play in serious dirt.
    Cheers Andi

      Wow, that's quite the fleet, Andreas. You sound far more experienced than me re what sort of bike to use in Namibia. What will you use the KTM 690 for - off road only? Too bad it won't be coming to Canada as I'm looking to change my bike in 2023. I'd like to consider the 800MT from CF Moto but unsure about the resale value of that long term... most likely not high... Would a KTM 790 slightly more expensive than the 800MT (I'd expect) keep a better resale value? I'd like to know your opinions on that! So far, both don't seem available in Canada so they might not even be options... I'd like a bike with cruise control like those two offer and not too big and heavy or costly but those seem to be rare options... and the Japanese offers in the middle range don't even offer it as an option... Really too bad the manufacturers aren't willing to offer what the customers are asking.

    • @BlueMarbleRider
      @BlueMarbleRider  Рік тому

      Great points, particularly the cruise. CF Moto are a good brand, but not well known on these shores or really proven yet. IMHO, the KTM would offer much better resale. If the 790 comes in substantially less than the 890, I think it will make a dent in the Tuareg/Tenere market. Sadly, though, If we see it in Canada, I don't think we'll see it here until at least 2024.

    I was excited about the 790 adventure until I rode one on the Continental Divide Trail. The bike had 6100 miles at the start. At the end of day one the front right brake disk spacers fell off leaving the disk flopping around. Day four the kickstand collapsed and could no longer support the weight of the bike. Gas tank venting was a problem. If the bike was hot and there was at least half tank gas would shoot out of the gas cap when the cap was open.
    So now the bike will be made in China. Sorry I’m out.

    The fact that it will have the demo mode is a big turn off. You have already bought the bike with all the features, KTM then wants you to pay for them a second time. Chinese quality is very hit and miss, they are improving but still not there. I will be looking elsewhere.

    Makes sense to compete with the middle weight 650-800cc class, what with the new jap bikes and success of T7 and Tuareg. Based on HP the 890 really competes more with the 900-1100cc class anyway. So same platform covering both spectrums. I’m more interested in a 490-690 Adv R for lighter weight off road capability anyway. I wonder what it will do to the CFMoto 800MT which uses the 790 engine and is essentially a more road going tourer than the old 790 used to be. Seems like the newer 790 will compete directly with the cheaper 800MT, which is probably the weirdest outcome. Particularly if the updated 790 is supposed to partly target the Asian market where the CFMoto would be more accepted by the local consumers, meaning I wonder if the 790 would really even sell that much better there considering an almost identical bike is already available and will always be considerably cheaper than a ktm branded bike. Europe is a different market though, and I’d guess the revamped 790 will out sell the 800MT. Phasing out the standard 890 makes sense too, to get more clarity in the line up. Will be interesting to see if they do that. Perhaps not if they don’t intend to bring the 790 state side though. Maybe just swap those two everywhere else but murica

    Actually. i just purchased a 790 s thanks to the lower seat height, I would have preferred the R but it was too high. This bike is perfect for the Philippines market when you don't want to go offroad but only on normal roads and any trails. Here, you need a bike able to pass through heavy hazards on the tarmac. The bike is very fun to drive whatever the environment(didn't test it high speed though). When facing corners, you get in confidently too. Obviously, the brakes are very good and the saddle is acceptable even if i wouldn't call it comfy. Power is more than enough specially when you consider how busy the roads are and you have very little opportunity to drive fast. My only real criticism relates to the suspension which is not adjustable and very hard. On the road, when you face a big unexpected hole in the street this is a plus as a hard suspension allows to pass without bottoming up and more importantly keeping you on course but this is not true on a trail and on a fast highway where a softening of the suspension would be a real plus. Another thing i didn't expect was the high fuel consumption which is more than my previous Versys. As soon as you reach 12 km, the bike feels light but when you push it in a parking you feel the weight, There are some small items which are not very good like the fuel gauge which is not very trustable and the windshield nearly useless but overall it is a very fun bike to drive. Perfect to go out for the week end but not for long drives due to the lack of comfort. You can see the difference with Japanese bikes which have no real weak points but are less performance oriented for most of their bikes offering. I cannot speak about reliability because the bike is still quite new(1200 km). Still, i love to dance with the bike when i get out of traffic jams, pedestrians, mopeds, trucks. car, dogs and else.

    I know some are puzzled as to the "why" of this in light of already having the 890....I would get it because the 790 (should) be more off road capable. But the puzzling part is if the weight that this video gives is correct (437 lbs)...then it is more heavy than the 890? I don't get how a heavier bike is "entry level?" I don't get how non adjustable suspension is "entry level?" Entry level riders would do better with lighter weight and learning how to tune a suspension....I swear it seems bike makers are out of touch with riders....This being out of touch is apparent with this "demo mode" then pay hundreds of dollars for a couple of lines of software code.....Way out of touch! It's funny because most of the "demo mode" riding is during break in period....so....one can't really know if they want these extra lines of software code....And back to the non adjustable suspension.....What a load of crap! It doesn't cost much more to make an adjustable suspension. They need to stop insulting our intelligence. Modern day bike prices are ridiculous as it is....This 790 could be a hit if they just get the weight down to match the lower displacement....And as good as suspension as the 890 to take advantage of true off road riding just like the riders in their commercial ads. If one rides like the riders in the KTM ads, then you'll be breaking parts and replacing them on bikes this heavy and with a non adjustable suspension.

    A very thorough run down of KTM’s current marketing plan regionally and internationally. KTM portrays itself as a ‘Premium Brand’ so pitches itself against BMW, Ducati, Husqvana etc. It is quite amazing what lengths KTM will go to gain and expand its market share. Seems attempts are being made to conquer Yamaha’s position with the T7 Tenere, obviously a threat in the ‘mid Adventure bike catagory, but the T7 is made to a lower ‘Price Point’. KTM’s use of the ‘Demo’ package is pretty ruthless and my opinion is that it will put a lot of buyers off KTM. The reinvented 790 could herald a trend by manufacturers to create ‘Lazarus models’ which re appear after short spells. Clearly some rusted on KTM owners may choose to purchase the latest or newest models that become available such as the 890 or 890 R. Clearly it’s possible to ‘retro manufacture’ a motorcycle to a cheaper ‘price point’ and so compete with their closest rivals. However, with all the reports available on line of ‘tech failures and glitches’ with their onboard ‘Modes’ maybe KTM should address ‘tech reliability’ foremost, and retain their ‘Premium manufacturer’ reputation.

    Further proof, if any were needed, that KTM product development and marketing are staffed by idiots. Like your new bike? It’ll be out of the lineup in a year or two and replaced with something better and more expensive. Then bafflingly they’ll farm the old bike offshore (this time even further away) and bring a not at all better model back at the same price the original bike sold for. And give you electronic features you didn’t really need but get long enough to grow accustomed to, then take them away if you don’t pay them more money. One of the many reasons, like no extended warranty in the UK and if anything does go wrong you’re at the mercy of the dealer as KTM won’t give a damn, why I’ll never buy one. Oh, and last but not least, they look fugly!
