Ahh Gothic... still my golden standard for an open world RPG done right, since it did so many amazing things that moden open world games still struggle with. Like having a smaller world packed with content instead of a massive world that's mostly empty, or how it's a sandbox sim with some rpg elements and a light story instead of being a linear run from Point A to B to C with endless side-quests filling the UI. Gothic should also be a standard on how to do Immersion well.

Modded Gothic 2 is STILL best action rpg. Even devs themselfs cant repeat its sucess. Somehow Risen 2-3 and Elex manage to be worse at everything.
Other companies all kinda meh. Skyrim is simple boring minedless grind. Endreal mod though is kinda like gothic with small hand crafted world.
In all other rpgs you just improve your numbers to deal bigger numbers to those who have even bigger numbers, You never improve your actual skills. In gothic your moveset, character movement change based on your skills. You feel like you progress from peasant to god.

@@nonono9194I have heard a lot about it, but haven't played or seen much. Heard it's maybe like the Tamriel rebuilt mod, which adds the huge mainland area to Morrowind. So they say Returning expands the map 10 times? To which I wonder, what is the point of that, does it tie in with the main quest at all, or it's just tons of extra things to do that aren't very relevant except for grinding exp?

    • @nonono9194
      @nonono9194 7 місяців тому

@@bulanet271 it adds alot of new areas and new quests and a parallel storyline of these keepers who are above the 3 gods in gothic which leads to a 7th chapter after you beat the vanilla end boss, the new storylines are fan fiction quality and aren't very good tbh, they keep Raven around even after you do Jharkendar. The new areas are there for grinding and for the new storylines, they'd be pretty decent if the writing was good.
The writing is something I ignore when I play and it's only an English text translation with new voice acting in russian - but with that said the gameplay of it and the character progression is really really good and very addictive I'd only recommend it if you really like the gameplay of gothic and it also would take a new player likely 150 or so hours to finish.
If a modern game took the gameplay design elements and character progression of the Returning mod i could honestly be a Dark Souls tier quality game.

I had 2, played through once and enjoyed it. The sensation of your character getting better, then YOU being able to as a player capitalize on that, was really cool. Getting that next level in your weapon skill and suddenly carving through previously difficult enemies is something I've not seen any game do since. Closest we've seen might be Kingdom Come: Deliverance and nothing else even approaches that level of PLAYER feeling stronger as the character gets stronger. But then, now that you understand its combat, you as a player can learn how to make the most out of your character's low skill level on a future playthrough. It's an approach that badly needs to be used because of how immersive and how good it feels. Just getting another skill isn't nearly as fun.

Thank you for providing this timestamp and not wasting my time. This is atrocious, yes it is a fetch quest, but it very easy to do. At the same time it makes sense for the orc not having the material to make it, as he is enslaved. Then to conclude that this is only remembered fondly due to people wearing rose tinted glasses. And then say he will never and have never finished it just to add on top of it. Screw this, sounds like he just did not like the game to begin with. Nothing wrong with that, would have been nice with a disclaimer in the start.
I played it for the first time back in 2020 and after I got the grips of the controls, I found an enjoyable game. That has interesting ideas and interesting mechanics on top. @@napukapu Never mind that the map, in my opinion, is interesting enough to go through several times. With both Gothic 1 and 2 there's this sensation that if you venture off the well-trodden path, you can find something new such as a hidden chest or a secret or a small cave. If I remember correctly, you can find a random note in Gothic 1 that says something like "There is a secret behind a waterfall" and, lo and behold, you can actually look for and find a cave behind one of the waterfalls in the game. Gothic 2 took this concept to the extreme. I played through that game six times or so and every time I found something new. In the beginning alone, there are three or four different ways of entering the first city. As in, you can be a rube and fool or bribe the gate guard or you can go around the city wall and swim to the harbor. This is what I miss most in modern RPGs: This sense of "I can *actually* do what I want".

There are so many smaller quest you can pick up that way.
The sect camp gives you less xp but there is one weed seller in the small camp that gives you scrolls (chose sleep) for the weed movement quest.
Use this scroll to put one student of a Baal right next to him to sleep and he'll talk to you.

and if you join the old camp or the sect camp, go to the ore baron's house, and in one of the upstairs room you will get an amulet that has 15 melee and range protection... and make sure to check the side rooms for some permanent health increasing potions.... also you can open the chests next to the black smith for some nice weapons and a 4 permanent strength potion.

This is a German game. It offers a unique gaze into the German mindset. The Germans are pathologically hard workers, and they will make you work in their game. They have a psychosexual propensity for sado-masochism, they enjoy enduring hardship and suffering as well as inflicting hardship and suffering upon others; but once you have successfully endured it and come out on top, boy is it ever satisfying.

I played Gothic 1 first at the time it came out (english sounds really bad, I played the german version), then bought Morrowind because I wanted something similar. (Little did I know, nothing would ever hit like gothic 1)
So I bought Morrowind when it came out and it was way worse. Just generic fanatsy, generic gameplay, lame universe overall, map might as well have been designed by a random algorithm.
The world feels unrealistic, giant cities full of people, but almost no farm land or anything around it. Just artificial, like a sheltered childs idea of how the outside world works.
It's basically stereo typical western fantasy. Every bethesda game is that way actually. Bland and made by sheltered people, who just reitterate on other sheltered peoples work over and over.
Gothic feels like it's actually trying to build a believable senario, low fantasy, with believable people and (mostly) believable animals. You're not a hero. You're just some guy.
If you play morrowind before gothic it's probably the other way around, that's what I meant with nostalgia.
Gothic former my idea of role playing games, that's why the genre was mostly a disappointment for me as a whole.
Morrowind formed other peoples ideal, that's why they are easily entertained baby brains.
    And that's ok.

You have so many lockpicks towards the end you can just mindlessly try lockpicking everything and never need to quick load cause that has an annoying load time. The higher your lockpicking skill the less lockpicks you lose and you can think about it less.

It's simple, Gothic is not for pussies :D I played Gothic when I was a kid, starting out on Gothic 2, one of the best RPGs of its time. Now I'm playing Gothic 3, even though Gothic 3 didn't get as much love as the previous games, it's still a great game. Fortunately, the community made a patch for G3 and fixed a lot of bugs. But it's all about the atmosphere, which I can't even describe. For some reason, Gothic has such a great atmosphere that modern games can only dream of.
Today's modern games (not all of them) are kind of "gilded sh*t" not that they're necessarily bad, but they're more or less just "walk simulators". Just open the map to see where to go and in the worst case put in Fast Travel. To make walking more enjoyable, developers rely on nice graphics so that you can enjoy the surroundings while you... walk :D. The only saving grace is sometimes at least an interesting and well-written story. 80% of the modern games I've played have often been so boring in their own way that you want speedrun them. Just chasing the story, because that's often all a game has to offer. No need to solve and read the problems when the map shows you where to go. No need to find your way when you simply teleport somewhere etc. etc. of course you don't have to use it, but the games encourages you to do so because it has nothing else to offer. Everything is generically designed, almost nothing interesting the player encounters on the way, just a few scripted enemies and so on.

You can use it to get to Scar very early (as i said - without joining any faction) and to rob the whole Gomez's quarter armory (oposite from their kitchen - lots of early decent swords worth using/selling) just dont bring ore as they WILL STEAL IT. and save after every time you get up after stealing few swords - sometimes guards will straigh up kill you.

I remember playing Gothic back in 2003. Far was the impression that the game was terrible. I guess terribleness came with time and other games. I can't imagine playing now unmoded. Still a good game on story alone.

And you don't have to run around, you have fast travel and speed potions at this point.

How to make Gothic less terrible
-Make it run on Unreal engine 4
-Have conversation choices like the best game ever Mass Effect!
    >Have the art be bright atmospheric complimentary colors
    >Have everyone be nice
    >Make the comment pressure based.
-Have the character talk funny charming and charismatic like Nathan drake.
    -Have 2 hours of cutscenes
    -PORT IT TOO SWIIIIIIIIIITCH!
-Have a flat design UI where you pause screen
    -Waypoint markers.
    Gothic is good now.

nyet, game is fine. i live 20 minutes from the developer's office. it was ground breaking at the time and i am glad it doesn't play like a "modern game" because most modern games are quite frankly mediocre.

I played the hell out of this game when it came out. I stopped playing at the point where you lose access to the camp, as I no longer had access to my huge vault of inventory and was in a position where I was basically dirt poor and couldn't really proceed. Didn't have a save before the camp closure was triggered.
Still loved what I had played, though, but gave up on continuing. Never played again.

Gothic one and two are such underrated and forgotten games. Played through one about 20 times ans 2 with the expansion at least 50 times. Each time i found out something new about each game.

Imagine getting filtered by the controls of all things and then still complaining about having to "endure" the game just because you were bad at it even WITH a crutch.
The game doesn't have to be "endured" it's just a fun game.

I rememember when I was younger, right around the time I entered middle school, my friend had this game, and we would cheat, we would always turn on god mode, we tried to play with out, but even his dad said that he played through it with god mode on, we didn't know anything about training the skills etc. So we'd turn on god mode spawn in the strongest weapon we could think of and run around and just kill everyone and everything. It was good fun. Years later as a young adult I decided to play it again, I orginally planned on playing through without any cheats, but ended up at some point growing tired of running back and forth across the map, so i used goto camera to fast travel, and jus becuase I had never beaten the game before I went through everything with free camera, and goto camera and god mode on. Eventually after playign Gothic 2 and beating that, I went back and beat Gothic 1 without cheats, and I felt like I had finally actually finished. I then played G3, and Risen, and I've kind of been itching to play again, but I've decided to wait for the remake to jump back in and play Gothic again.

The first time I played this game was like 2005. I quit mid first chapter. A few years later I quit at the beginning of chapter 3. Last year I completed it for the first time. And probably for the last time.
The thing is chapter one is super fun, so many things to do. Starting with chapter 2 it gets super boring because it's completely linear. It seems to me like they wanted to make this super complex RPG, but by the time they finished chapter one they realized they blew thru most of their budget and time, so they just threw up some shit to busy the player for a few hours and shipped it.
Nevertheless I was having fun most of the time, once I realized I can beat up any NPC and take their shit (without killing them!) with no consequences. Since then I'm missing this in games like Skyrim with their "oh no, you can't just beat up this protected NPC and take their axe :-(". Gothic is a janky game, but it had some futuristic mechanics no other game of it's type has even tried since.

I like the jank. I feels like a quest/challenge to know where the bugs are and circumvent them. That's why I don't play with the community patch.

Well, I disagree. This is not a hard game. Just has a very unorthodox control scheme. After you got it, and it's not a complex scheme, just weird, you're good to go.
