The best line in this video was "to fix this I need to game quite a bit. I don't mind that" If only every fix required such dedication to fix lol. Amazing job once again you put a smile on my face.
4:47 that's actually another heat shield for the CPU itself that you would have to pry off to replace the thermal paste on the CPU itself. Sort of like delidding but without hot air guns.
Hey Joey, this doesn't seem like an overheating issue, it seems more like an issue with software. That said... The fans "failing" is a very common issue on these, so if it is overheating that could be why. But (there's always a but) it isn't always because of the fan. The mosfets fail quite often on these. Usually you can kick them back into life by giving it a shock with a few volts into the VIN rail of the fan and that brings the mosfet back to life. It fails open so injecting voltage closes the gate temporarily, just enough to make it work again. I've done it loads of times on the original switch and never had one come back:)
Cheers Phil, great to know. I put in the replacement fan I purchased and it seems to be working fine, do you think over time the mossfet is going to cause this fan to break aswell? Or would a new fan be considered a fix?
Looking forward to the update buddy! I wish you had said, I had a lite here that I just donated to someone else because it was beyond me, i'd have been happy to fire it over to you. LEt me know if there's other bits you need in the future buddy.
That's the biggest problem with a handheld. A handheld should not have an active cooler. A handheld lives in dirty trouser pockets and backpacks. Active fans get dirty and shorten the lifespan of a handheld. That's why the Switch Lite is a bad successor to the N3DS XL.
Its better all round than the 3ds. Clam shell is garbage and the ergonomics sucks becausee of that . The gba advance and switch are far better tha. All the clamshell shit from nintendo.
I'm having problems with my switch lite right now as well. I installed the new fan but I'm not sure if I installed it correctly. What side of the ribbon cable goes into the connector?
I had my Switch Lite for 4 years going to 5 years now and i have a carrying case for mines when ever i am finished with my gaming session i turn it off and put it back into the game. I do not leave it on unless I'm going to charge it. This is good to know so i can change my fan on a later time.
My switch lite is having half of the problem you had, lol. While I'm with the wifi on watching UA-cam, the right side just get SUPER hot, but my fan is actually working and my thermal paste was recently changed. But with UA-cam on, my switch goes to 62 Cº, of the normal 33 Cº, the weird thing is that immediately after i close UA-cam, 5 seconds later, he goes to 41 Cº and less than 3 minutes later is on 33 Cº again... So far i only noticed this on the Lite version, my v1 gets a little warmer (but nothing much) while using UA-cam and the fan is REALLY loud.
Daft question but have you tried injecting voltage into the fan while it's off the switch. If it works it's not the fan and possibly something on the board. Just a thought
Not a daft question at all Dave... it's a great one actually. I've not tried this no. My power bench leads are broken at the mo, so have to get some new ones. This was deffo a great shout though :)
@@JoeyDoesTech as silly as it sounds you could try a quick test with a 9v battery and two bits of wire for a quick and dirty check. I've done that with a few laptop and netbook fans. If you've already got one on order and this one is dead its not going to hurt it. Also does it free spin its not likely that its gummed up with even a small bit of fluff or something? I tend to spend my time working on computers . It used to be cars lol. but this has also been the case for me on a few laptops that were overheating.
Looking forward to the next one! Always a charm to open up something new and see everything inside and play about. Great stuff, hope the delivery and parts does the job!
I am having the fan problems too like when i turn it on i hear nothing from the fans im wondering when the fan is supposed to kick on if some one know can they tell me.
It kicks in when the CPU gets past a certain temp I'm pretty sure. Put your check up to the fan grill to see if you can feel anything coming out. Worth launching and playing a game for a bit first :)
oh my gosh my lite has just been freezing but before it freezes it makes the fan go like crazy then stops i think i might need thermal paste because don't question me but i played like 800 hours of minecraft.
Thanks Micro 😊 Yeah I tried it for a bit when I turned it on originally but I didnt play anything whilst the back was off as didnt want to mess anything up 😂 Should give this a try though.
I have a feeling that next week's video will start like an American serial drama: "Previously... on Joey Does Tech" That thermal paste looked pretty perished, as if it is older than a DMG Gameboy. Thermal paste ironically burns up gradually with excessive heat, just like waterproofing slowly washes out when it gets wet. Good luck Joey.🤞
Hey Joey great video but the idk if the fan was a problem at all. Ive worked on many computer and laptops before and even my own switch lite and yeah I think the no paste there was doing it lol. the reason the fan wasn't spinning is because the switch has to get to a certain temp for it to turn on I see it on my switch all the time because I modded the back and made it clear, So i see it turn on and turn off accordingly depending on what i was doing. I think replacing the paste in those things are better anyways since the pink paste is prob not as good
@@JoeyDoesTech oh really my bad, im surprised my fan has lasted this year then lol. where do you buy the replacement fan? Just wondering cuz ik it will happen one day lol
Hey I am wondering if the problem was the fan becouse I have the same problem on my Switch? I looked up on youre channel and cound not fine the upate video. Hope someone replise to this... thaks anyways

same switch, same game, different game method (i got the in device store version) idk about cartridge since i haven't used one yet (game time 111hrs). you might've gotten a faulty switch lite. looked at this video cause YT for 6hrs+ cause it to get as hot as a pan at about 50° (might be normal but high expectations cause it's a Nintendo product)
Funny story about this... I fixed it by replacing the fan and it started working. I then sold it on Ebay, but the buyer sent it back saying the fan stopped working again! So I need to revisit this :)

@@JoeyDoesTech a new fan is generally OK mate, if the mosfet hasn't failed and a fan fixed it, it should be all good :)
the fans are different but the fan normally kicks in after a few minutes when you are playing a game
Amazing thanks for the heads up Jon, at least now I know :) Hopefully the new part actually works hey...

My switch lites are always really warm in that same spot…..that’s fairly normal. The fan is working but seems to have a very conservative fan curve.

Sweet first lite. Can't believe I have to wait a whole week! 🥺 I need closure.
Haha I know right! Hopefully it comes this week :(
I'm having problems with my switch lite right now as well. I installed the new fan but I'm not sure if I installed it correctly. What side of the ribbon cable goes into the connector?
My switch lite fan turns on at start up but it runs at a lower rpm then when it gets hot it ramps up . I have exactly the same switch lite as you
Thanks for the heads up :)

Damn, the video quality. I for sure thought you have like 100k+ subs with how good your videos are.
Thankyou, I really appreciate that :) hopefully one day we reach 100k! 😁
The fan started spinning after 15-30 of gameplay
same

Is there a video update for this?
Was there a follow up!? Did you replace the fan?
Yeah man, shortly after this video there was an update :)
@@JoeyDoesTech yeah just saw! The replacing 2ds card reader and switch lite update! 😂
@@JoeyDoesTechwhere is the uptade video?
i used my switch lite everyday for a few around 4-8 hours, until last june when it stopped working.ill go looking for the the thermal paste
Joey if you lift the metal plate where you put the thermal paste you can then put thermal paste right on top of apu 👍
This is a great shout Neo. Thanks for the info 😊
Thank you so much for this video!! I suspected my fan was not working and your video was really helpful

@@JoeyDoesTech What size antistatic met are you using thank you
what did you use to clean it off?
I would personally leave the plastic backing off to watch if the fan kicks in.
I left it for a while Roy whilst playing and it didn't seem to kick in at all :S I think it's best to replace and hope! If not, I have a spare fan :)
Did you replace the fan???
Same with mine but i need to replace the fan as the bearings are now knackered on it
Do you think not enough thermal paste will make fps drops?
If the console is overheating I would say so :)

@joeydoestech. What was the outcome of this? Having issue with lite fan also. Can't find anything online that helps
and there is no second video?
well its been a yr i havent seen the update so was it the fan ?
what exactly did you use to clean it?
I use 99% Isopropyl Alcohol.
Why not take of the heat spredder and apply directly on the cpu. The thermolpaste under there is shit too
I have theater color switch and never heard the fan turn on
So did the new fan work my Nintendo switch lite is overheating aswell and I don't know why

I'd try running it without the back just to be certain it's not spinning up. Great video!

It's overheating because the "paste" they use is absolute garbage.
