Two of the most legendary Finnish TV comedy shows of all-time (Tankki täyteen and Reinikainen) were written by an English guy who moved to Finland as a 20-year-old: Neil Hardwick. He speaks pretty good Finnish.

Sort of -- I took two years in college, and now I'm able to read manga with the help of a dictionary, pick up lots of conversations in anime. Anyway, Japanese has a lot of words like that. Basically, I try to understand the language the way a native speaker would. For instance, why is "mono" ("thing") used to indicate strong emotion or a reason for something? Does it have something to do with making something more concrete for emphasis, like how we use "literally"? ...Huh, I never thought about it before, but actually, that sounds about right. Yes! I never knew what to say to ”what’s up?” I’d just start telling about my day or something like that. I live in Texas btw. I am from Jyväskylä, Finland!
@@Cillana That's what I would've guessed. But it seems it's going down the same road as 'How do you do?' which used to be a question meaning 'What's up? How are you?' - like it looks like, if you think it litterally. But later it became just a type of 'Hello', even shortening to 'Howdy' etc.
I am surprised people in Jyväskylä don't know how to reply to it... "What's up?" "Rally cars. When they jump, they are very high up. Except in Harju. Road is flat there."
I saw him live on my birthday a few weeks before this show and I’m so proud to see him performing this hilarious act in front of so many more people! He’s so humble and true to himself, he really deserves this fame💖
This is a piece that only someone like Ismo can do. The fact that he is from foreign origin makes his skit of curiously analyzing the English language in America very genuine.
The funniest part of the Finnish understanding, so much depth to the simplicity of saying it how it is, thank you for the independence days, thank you for the laughter insurance inspection.
another interesting word in English is "hell". You can be a hell of a skier - and that means you're a really great skier. If someone says about you "you're a hell of a guy!" That means you're a great guy. But if someone tells you "What happened, you look like hell!" That is not good!
He is like the most simple humble guy..and even cracks joke with a humble facial expression. But the listeners don't remain humble when it comes to laughing at his jokes, it's not possible... Great comedian
he has the voice, gesture, funny face and talent to be a classic comedian like the old comedy cinema legends. I hope cinema can use his talent because comedy in cinema is not like before.
Oh my god that so good. The great thing was it was just funny enough meaning I've never laughed so hard, so subtly. Soft laughter but non stop. Best sensation ever!
I hate it, when my poor Swiss cousins kiss and hug me, although they actually hate me. The truth is, they just want my money. Finns hate superficiality.
@@sini74Really? I find it super interesting. I found out only couple of years ago that a lot of our ancestors immigrated to America. They seem very connected to Finnish culture after all this time too.

Why is this the funniest thing I’ve ever seen?!? Amazingly done. I definitely believe in the material but most of all I am a new fan of Ismo and his delivery/style, for lack of a better term. That was -badass-
@ortomy Turns out the love has grown towards the entire you, not just your ass. Tho for some men, it my start from that end. For me, that's more like the bust. Yet an agreeable face makes my ass forget for a while she has some body below her neck.
Ismo is fantastic! He comes by a local free comedy show in LA when he's in town to try out new material and always makes the whole place laugh. Super nice guy, too!
The real art is that he isn't even making any jokes he is just talking about how ridiculous english is and we all love it. This man as found is a genius
I'm Finnish and I think one of the first "culture shocks" (for both sides I guess) when I first actually spoke with english-native people in real life was this "What's up" "How is it going" thing. I answered them with brutal honesty (I didn't really even feel bad at the time) and you could just feel the akwardness after that. Thinking hard right now if I should just adopt Ismo's methods and just give them another "what's up" back in future.
When someone says 'How's it going" the trick is to say "yeah not too bad", even if your dog has just been run over by a car. That's the polite British thing to do. It might also be the American way I'm not sure.
I'm a Finn too, and while we get them uncomfortable answering questions that were never supposed to be answered they also ask questions that make us feel uncomfortable. I have people I hardly know asking how's my family, mom, etc. My instant reactions is that they are waaay too nosy and it's none of their business. In Finland questions like that are considered way too personal and invading unless this person actually knows my family well. For the same reason I probably act like a complete jerk in USA because I never ask about their family. It's just not my business unless they bring it up! My husband (American) is used to this by now and my ways of getting straight to the point when having a conversation. He's also learning that silence isn't awkward, for a Finn it's just one more form of communication, positive or negative, but mostly positive. :)
In the US, it depends on where you are and the circumstances. If you're in a rush or on the move, just a generic fine, or just we just return the question. But, otherwise, many people just start talking about their day. LIke, in Walmart standing line, they'll start talking about their grandkids or soemething.
It's amazing when you have comedy that doesn't have to be vulgar just for the sake of being vulgar they took a foreigner to break down all of these nuances really good and really funny
it warms my heart to see someone who is a foreigner come here and just deliver an absolute MASTERPIECE of an act. he stayed true to who he was, executed perfectly, and warmed the hearts of everyone listening. truly spectacular to watch. you can see it in conan's face afterwards

My fiance and I enjoyed this routine. Super funny and smart guy. This is why I love Conan. He supports comic like him
Fun fact: Ismo Leikola used to be a Physics student at the same University I am currently attending on studying Psychology and the Physics department is right next to us on the other side of the lake (bridge leads trough it) on a city known as JyväsKylä (GrainVillage, but it is actually a larger city in Finland). Everytime Conan is with a Finnish person, he mentions Koskenkorva. That's not a bad thing at all.
But does he really have Koskenkorva or is he just getting Ismo's hopes up?
Not a bad thing my ass.
He should mention salmiakkikossu
Conan talks about Koskenkorva but in reality he prefers Haitian mud cookies made from dirt!
Minttu is even better ;)
Yes! I never knew what to say to ”what’s up?” I’d just start telling about my day or something like that. I live in Texas btw. I am from Jyväskylä, Finland!
I live in Texas too (but not remotely Finnish). I had no idea that was how you were supposed to respond. I would probably respond "Not much. You?"
Acceptable responses to what's up: (may include but not limited to) how are you, what's going on, oh nothing much, same ole same ole, ect.
I am surprised people in Jyväskylä don't know how to reply to it...
"What's up?"
"Rally cars. When they jump, they are very high up. Except in Harju. Road is flat there."
First time in ages I've genuinely laughed with a comedian on Conan...he's brilliant!
I saw him live on my birthday a few weeks before this show and I’m so proud to see him performing this hilarious act in front of so many more people! He’s so humble and true to himself, he really deserves this fame💖

Juan Rodriguez he won the "Funniest man of the world" competition. Cant remember if it was 2016 or 2017. EDIT: It was 2014 apparently.
Einea5mk really? I'm gonna need check out more of him
Einea5mk 2014. Time flies.
Well finland has the best comedians
Can you imagine he goes into a retail store and the associate asks "can I help you?" So he just puts his stuff down and leaves? 😂
I think they would say may instead of can. I think we all have the intuitive fear that saying can is quite rude.

Conan should come visit Finland again.
NO. You had your turn!
Yes pls
This is a piece that only someone like Ismo can do. The fact that he is from foreign origin makes his skit of curiously analyzing the English language in America very genuine.
Stumbling upon his laugh factory bits turned me into an instant fan. His observations about the English language are hilarious.
Torilla tavataan! ( I have no idea what it means but I don’t wanna be left out from all the other comments)

The funniest part of the Finnish understanding, so much depth to the simplicity of saying it how it is, thank you for the independence days, thank you for the laughter insurance inspection.
He’s really good. The fact he can take one word we all use and make it funny is amazing.
another interesting word in English is "hell". You can be a hell of a skier - and that means you're a really great skier. If someone says about you "you're a hell of a guy!" That means you're a great guy. But if someone tells you "What happened, you look like hell!" That is not good!
Stop stealing Ismo's material perkele! :D
I love the way he says “no”
That was wonderful! I love how vulgar and yet innocent the whole thing was. Hilarious.
His delivery is great.
He is like the most simple humble guy..and even cracks joke with a humble facial expression.
But the listeners don't remain humble when it comes to laughing at his jokes, it's not possible...

I love the understated humor of the Nordic countries. So much humor in subtle word choices.
Ismo is really funny, well thought out material!
He is one of the few new comedians in the last 5 years that is actually that funny!
Why is this the funniest thing I’ve ever seen?!? Amazingly done. I definitely believe in the material but most of all I am a new fan of Ismo and his delivery/style, for lack of a better term. That was -badass-
He forgot to mention "You can kiss my ass" that would be funny to explain
IIRC this is just a part of the whole ass set. I think he touches on kissing ass at some point in the full set.

Whenever someone says 'How's things?' or 'How's it going?', I always answer. One day they will learn not to ask me...
Zarkow o
The "ass division" technique is flawless !
Flawlass. :-)
