I know this old, so I really hope you still hand wind some of your skeins. It's such a peaceful process and a simplicity that is often lost in our modern Knitting world. I hand wind my skeins because it's nostalgic. When I would watch cartoons at my great grandparents' house they'd be sitting on the couch, my gg'pa with his hands in the air holding the skein like a human swift and my gg'ma would be on the other end winding her ball of yarn. Such joyful memories!
This has been the perfect solution to the problem I had of not having access to a winder thanks to covid. This created the most beautiful cake that kept the tension nice and low. Thank you thank you thank you!!
Thanks Andrea! You really are very helpful and I am a huge fan of your patterns!!! I ordered from BT and received my Ranch 01 and I am going to try out your idea on winding. I am almost done with my Birds of a Feather shawl which I am so happy with and was a extreme joy to knit! I am using HHF in color way Film noir skinny singles and mohair! LOVE IT!!!!
I now realise that I can buy skeins rather than being restricted to ready wound 'cakes', which I was doing as I don't have the specialist equipment. This gives me so much more choice.

Thankyou, Andrea. I tried this and it works so well!
Love hand wound balls! I have several swifts and a wooden ball winder, but I love my knees and hands best 😊
You are a genius. Thanks for the share. ♥️ Happy New Year

That's pretty cool, I know I'd wrap it too tight and cut off circulation to my thumb 😀
wow Thanks! I love your video's!
You are amazing thank you for this tutorial
How do you handwind a hank without a swift if there are tangles? I would love to not use a swift.
How do you take that off your finger?
