When you’re in college or school brown parents say “If you get 90% you’re a failure”.
However, when they meet a certain matchmaker from Mumbai, “70%” or “C” is good enough or even “Great”!!
Like make it make sense! 😅
Honestly, excellent episode and some thoughts as a South Asian immigrant to The UK from Canada/India:
The “patriarchy” where a few men (15%?) have all the power is unfortunately perpetuated by women in brown cultures. This kinda makes sense based on my observations growing up.
I absolutely support young children (< 16) NOT being on TikTok.
Few people know this but the version of TikTok available in other countries (Indonesia or The US or The UK or Germany) is VASTLY different from the one available in mainland China (TikTok belongs to ByteDance a Chinese tech giant).
If you’re a teenager in mainland China (less than 13 years of age):
TikTok use is limited to 40 minutes a day by the Chinese Communist Party.
You’re shown science experiments that can be performed at home, museum and history exhibits, classical music and sports stuff as opposed to TikTok outside which pushes children to extremist content.
Dr. Rattan is correct when she says children should be kept away from social media.
Aging is an interesting discussion to have since people such as Aubrey De Grey, Altos Labs and David Sinclair (at Harvard) are working on a “cure” for aging.

Withholding a cell phone for a child that age is probably one of the smartest things a parent can do nowadays. Besides the torrent of mental health issues that come with participating in social media, there are the developmental issues that come with using the devices. Emotional intelligence and awareness is on a decline with the younger generations. People don't know how to be present with themselves or others. A lot of people don't know how to connect with other people on a deeper human level. Attention spans are dwindling. The effects our devices and apps have on our reward centers of our brains is akin to that of addiction. ANYWAY, I say all that to say that little girl is going to be a very awesome adult human.

Understand the worry of social media and development, as it is a real worry parents should be thinking about but coming at it from a 'control' perspective may be too serious. Educating someone is far more helpful then withholding it, educate them on the right and healthy way to engage with it. Its about building the right relationship with technology to empower the individual to use it how they wish, not how other people want.

Yup I agree! Also if we control too much children tend to go the other way...they also miss out on a lot of social culture... Good points nonetheless !
