I was one of the people reverse engineering these to get them working on Linux back in the day. The G19 (colour screen) runs Linux internally on a Texas Instruments SoC, and there is an unpopulated serial header on the board, giving a root shell. Despite this it never actually runs any applet code, it just receives a stream of pixel data like the monochrome ones. Theoretically you could turn it into a stand alone computer by rerouting the keyboard USB pins to the screen board USB and installing custom firmware.
That's awesome! Is that Linux setup documented anywhere online? I'm just seeing documentation for the display protocol & applets. I can't help but feel the urge to run a custom OS on one of those. (Alternatively, can you pull all the G19-specific info you'd need from a downloadable firmware package?)

Just FYI, the backlight flickering is extremely easy to fix if you have basic soldering skills. The flickering is caused by the LEDs themselves starting to die, but they are standard square through hole LEDs that you can buy anywhere. If you open up the keyboard, the backlight LEDs are on small PCBs that you can slide right out. Just swap them out, and you should be good to go. You can even change the colors (mine is green now), just be aware that different color LEDs may need different voltage so test them first. Purchased it upon release. Still my daily driver almost 20 years later. But it is in desperate need of TLC, and I have plenty of repairs and mods in mind: - keys backlight LEDs are barely visible, to be replaced with RGB adjustable ones + same for the display; - probably replace the brightness adjustment with an digital encoder knob; - add/replace audio knob with a heftier metal one; - replace inner USB 1.1 hub with a 3.0 one; - add support for plug-in macro-like extension boards designed & styled the same way (black frame, silver background); - replace the USB cable lead (to accomodate USB 3.0 + additional wires for mods and power); - integrate mini turn-key electronic PC on/off/reset lock; - add addressable RGB micro-leds for G macro keys (with some behind the scenes programming support, hopefully); - probably some others I've forgotten. A-boy-can-dream level: - replace all the keys with custom replaceable mechanical one with full key-level RGB. But, I guess at that point, I might as well make the whole custom keyboard from scratch...
Love this, and the Logitech keyboards. Typing this out on a G510 right now, and it's partnered with a MX700, the 180g wireless version of the MX518. The G510 dropped the USB ports in favour of a built-in USB sound device that actually sounds quite good. Might be the same one they used in the Z10 speakers. Even has a mic input. RGB support is also a thing, but it's the whole keyboard, not individual keys like modern ones. It does do neat things like change colour in GTA V depending on which character you're playing (Green for Franklin, Yellow for Trevor, and Blue for Michael). Aside from MSI Afterburner, HWinfo64 also supports the LCD screen for displaying system details. As for other gamer keyboards with screens, EVGA released the Z10 (no relation to the speakers, and I don't know how they didn't get sued by Logitech). Don't bother with it. It's hot garbage. They pretty much looked at the G15/510 and thought "This is neat! How could we make something like it, but do everything wrong?"
Thanks to F4mi im buying pretty much every product she reccomends and I was thinking of getting the g510, do you reccomend it for a poor windows 11 user??
@@musicfyme8072 Yes. AFAIK the LogitechG software supports it on Win11. Don't buy the overpriced G510s. People price-gouge on ebay, but it's the same keyboard as the 510, just with different Windows Vista/7 themed keycaps instead of Win8/10 ones.
I have so many great memories with this keyboard! The only thing you are missing for the complete early 2000's Logitech experience is the Z-5500 5.1 surround speakers. I'm pretty sure I compromised the structural integrity of my room with that subwoofer while playing Half-Life 2 and Doom 3. 😎

I had a G15 keyboard, and actually I had bought 3. This keyboard slowly morphed into the Logitech G700 mouse but before that the Logitech G7 mouse was right there next to the G15 keyboard. The G7 mouse had a quick swap battery pack, that you'd slide into a little usb hub. The Logitech G7 mouse with battery packs was the closest thing to a "gun related" mouse that you could "reload" with a battery to keep gaming, lol. Nowadays, I just use a 60% keyboard but with a G502 mouse.
I found one of these in a pawn shop years ago and seriously considered buying it, but they weren't willing to come down on the price even though some of the keys weren't working
I wish peripherals were still made in this same kind of way, completely jam-packed with features just because they can be. It makes them fun to own and use even if it's a little excessive. Definitely better than the push for total simplicity in the modern peripheral market. I'll definitely be buying one of these! (Also how have I not found this channel until now? This style of content is so neat!)

im using a logitech g510 to this day and i love it just for the keys and the screen to monitor power usage and temps or usage(and fps) also theres a "rgb" script for it which is neat
I used to have the g2 version of the G15 and that was my favorite keyboard ever. Sadly the membrane disintegrated because of age and some keys just randomly stopped working. Then I got a first gen one, but that also pretty quickly started showing the same signs of age. I even RGB modded the second gen keyboard, I loved it so much. Since then I've been using cheap mechanical keyboards, up until now. I bought a G915 a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. It may not have the screen, but I think it still has the spirit of the G15s. It's pushing the market, it's innovative with the low profile switches and the 1ms wireless dongle. Even almost 5 years after it's release I love it.
the reason some programs ignore the high F-keys is because different game development/input processing libraries support different sets of keys, and some are more complete than others. for example, SDL2 as well as the lightweight java game library with which minecraft is written both support F13-24, meanwhile something like Raylib doesn't have those keycodes defined at all. alternatively, programs can just use input gathering methods native to the operating system and simply choose to ignore data that doesn't map to a set of keycodes that the developers cared about
G15 was the best peripheral I have ever owned. Loved the screen for monitoring temps, the media buttons and just the look and feel of the whole thing. Sad it died on me
I bought this keyboard in 2005, snapped off the screen in rage while playing CS around 2008, and still used it until 2016! I upgraded to a Corsair K95 because it also has the 18 extra buttons, and I use them all the time. The only reason I decided to upgrade was because the paint on the WASD keys had worn off, and a friend who saw it thought I had used sandpaper to.. make me look like a cooler gamer, I guess?

So Ifunny brought me here. Hello my fellow crew mates.
I had one of these. Absolutely amazing keyboard, the integration with Battlefield 2142, it even gave you info that didn't appear in-game.
Ahem… how far?
I know what you are
You’re a disgusting individual. Let me know what she says in MLA format
we know
Find god?
the reason some programs ignore the high F-keys is because different game development/input processing libraries support different sets of keys, and some are more complete than others. for example, SDL2 as well as the lightweight java game library with which minecraft is written both support F13-24, meanwhile something like Raylib doesn't have those keycodes defined at all. alternatively, programs can just use input gathering methods native to the operating system and simply choose to ignore data that doesn't map to a set of keycodes that the developers cared about
From IFunny. Nice big bazongas.
G15 was the best peripheral I have ever owned.
Loved the screen for monitoring temps, the media buttons and just the look and feel of the whole thing.
Sad it died on me
Milkies
I bought this keyboard in 2005, snapped off the screen in rage while playing CS around 2008, and still used it until 2016! I upgraded to a Corsair K95 because it also has the 18 extra buttons, and I use them all the time.
The only reason I decided to upgrade was because the paint on the WASD keys had worn off, and a friend who saw it thought I had used sandpaper to.. make me look like a cooler gamer, I guess?
7:21 I’m here
You are definitely one of my favourite creators, I'm so glad I found your channel. Keep up the awesome work!! 💕✨

I had a G510 back in the day and loved it. It was still going strong when I finally upgraded to a mechanical board. It sucked to go from 18 programmable keys to 9 though. I kept it as a backup & finally tossed it when the rubberized surfaces started breaking down.
AWOOOOGA!!!!!!
I had one of these. I modded it so the lights would beat to my music. Ended up frying the PCB. Awesome keyboard.
22:32 i have that keyboard now. ;-;

Ahhh, i knew it would be great. Love you for making it in 4:3. I want a pair of those z10 speakers, looks lovely.
disgusting comment section, but great video nonetheless! the attention to detail here is amazing.
2:35 I'm not sure that they expected the person buying those premium mouse and keyboard sets to look exactly like that, but they probably wished that they did 🔥
Been checking out your videos since checking out the Smasnug one this morning. I'm really impressed with the levels of research and editing style and you are putting out really engaging content.
16:29 reminds me of the VMU for the Dreamcast. It's immediately better by virtue of not screaming at you to feed it coin cells.
Gmod physics noises hit right
I accidentally stumbled on your videos and this is just pure nostalgia. thanks mam!
