the fact that this program existed at all makes the wii mini even more strange because that thing just, can’t connect to the internet, it’s just like a wii cut in half, no gamecube support, no online/ shop channel, just base wii games and that’s it

It's weird to think that debit cards weren't enabled for online spending. I've always used a debit card since I never wanted to get in debt. I know at the time the Wii launched I was already making purchases online with it in various places. It never occurred to me that not all cards would work with online merchants.
By 2010 there were a lot of banks in Australia issuing Visa or Mastercard debit cards which can be used online, but the "EFTPOS" debit cards which were still pretty common couldn't be used online (and still can't even now, although they're seen much less often these days).
@@a_meme_name Most Aussie cards are dual-network these days. If you use it as "credit" or tap to pay, it uses the Mastercard or Visa network. If you use it as "debit" or "cheque", it uses the EFTPOS network which is processed entirely in Australia and has significantly lower fees for the merchant. Dual network cards are very uncommon worldwide and AFAIK only Australia has them in widespread use.
Generally only the Visa, Mastercard, and American Express worked online, whereas in Europe it wasn't uncommon to see things like the Maestro card, which is still used to this day (although Maestro was recently discontinued so they'll go away at some point).

Great video! Australia isn't really a cash-first society... Back in 2010, the majority of Aussies already had Visa/MasterCard debit cards with "tap to pay" capability. I remember being able to easily use the Wii shop.
@@Poosaycvm I'm Aussie but have been living in the USA for a little over 10 years now. When I left Australia in 2013, tap to pay was already commonplace - everyone used it.
