saguto is somewhere very happy watching this.
:)
Lol 👍👍
This is a spectacular video. Proponents of the stack and tilt really promote that left side bend. But it works in a conventional swing just as well. Very very important!
Thank you, Gregg! :)
I've played poor golf for so long and this is the best lesson I've seen on You Tube. I think this could be my eureka moment!
Hope it helps my friend!
another one of your amazing ah ha light bulb moments....this will help me and friends! the simplicity of the explanation is perfect.
mahalo jim
Thanks Jim!
Eric: I've been playing golf for over 60 years, taken 100's of lessons, but never heard the swing explained this clearly! I'm 6'10", 72yo and always struggled with too flat of a backswing and my head bobbing up and down. Left shoulder down is the key! Thanks so much! Greg
👊So glad this one was helpful, Greg! Our pleasure!
Been working on this since forever. Thanks for adding another visual
Hope it helps!
Thanks Eric. Best lessons on you tube!
Appreciate ya John!
Monsieur Eric, I often watch your friends vids ( Malaska, Saguto and so on), but I can say that all the good ingredients of a delicious recipe ( as a frenchman it counts…), are mixed in yours!! This vid is one of the best of yours therefore one of the very best on YT. There are all the main principles which lead to a real good impact and consistency. I unfortunately tried to have lessons from you online but I can’t technically join your academy… I’m gonna try again. Thanks for this good job!!
Appreciate the kind words and support Pascal!
You really are the best online instructor out there. Thanks!
Thanks Walter!!
Hey Eric thats one of the best explained videos youve done and i can definitely apply that to help my problem with my irons. Thanks
Thank you, Gordon! Hope it serves you well!
Awesome video! Thanks.
Thanks!
Great info dudes!!
Thanks, Ron!
steep to shallow is the great tip ever! I’ve had it wrong for years!
Hope this one helps, John!
Great explanation and makes a lot of sense. Thanks
Thank you! Hope it helps!
Great job! 👏🏼 💪🏼💪🏼
Thanks Nick!
I’m definitely missing that left side bend in the backswing! Great video!
Hope it helps!
Just in time. It's funny how you have "ah-ha" moments in golf and your like, man, why didn't I learn this sooner 😀. My spine angle in backswing has been killing me. Much better now.
Thanks for watching Casey!
Hi Eric, I played three over (current at 20 hcp) on the back nine today trying to overdo it like you mentioned. I think that is the key for my (individually) golfswing because it makes a natural golf swing automatic. Great Explanation, thank you
👊Thank you!
It would be interesting to see a video merging knee flex and this series .
Try this one I think we did that:

Between this, the missing link video, the hanger tool, and videoing my swings, I'm going to make a lot of money off my friends and club this summer. Eric's the Goat of this online coaching thing. Never even sent in a vid of my swing and he has helped improve my handicap every year. Down to a 12 and this year making the bid for single digits. The breakthrough is now.
Lets go! Love to hear that----I'll be rooting for you! Appreciate the support
Oh WOW!!!! I was doing the head dropping down on my turn which my instructor noticed but never said to steepen the swing.
When I look back at my session video I can see I was bringing the club in too low.
:)
Great drill! It may well be exactly what I've been looking for. For me the second part of the drill is key. It allows you to turn behind the ball. I've tried tilting or bending while keeping my left shoulder over the ball and all of my weight or pressure on the front foot. Creates enormous stress on the back. In the video you can see that Eric has turned behind the ball while staying centered. When I do this I feel like 60% of my weight is on the backfoot. So far I've only tried this in practice but the swing feels really good. I consistently follow through with a full balanced finish.
👊
Thanks Ron! Hope this one helps your game!
Hey Eric, love the video and excited to get working on this. Question for you - when I’ve worked on my left shoulder down in the backswing, I can’t seem to get any weight on my right side. Feels like all my weight is on my front foot. Very stack and tilty. Any thoughts on how to focus on this while still getting my weight transferred to my right side in the backswing?
Excellent instruction, I had developed a very flat swing that caused me to continue to hook my driver and longer clubs. I've tried everything possible to get rid of the hook but all was in vain. This helped tremendously.
Glad to hear this is helping Tim! If you run into any issues send swings to www.cogornogolf.com and we can fix!
I fixed this issue in my swing earlier this year, for the most part. I appreciate the additional explanation on why this is necessary though. Hopefully I can make this stick. It really is a game changer.
:)
Top video. Does this also apply to the driver swing?
Yep!
but since you are standing taller at setup the L shoulder won't go AS FAR DOWN
Tilt shoulders 90* to spine line....more tilt the shorter the club
Your friend reminds me of Max Homa. Nice guy. Great tips!
Both great guys!
This is very good stuff Eric! I'm currently working on this move. Reminds me of S&T. Is it ok to "feel" like I'm coming over the top in the downswing so that my trail shoulder leads coming down and the club shallows out? I think when I force to get shallow I early extend because I get a lot of fats and thins.
Thanks AJ! I would recommend the feels and drills in the following videos:

I need to work on this real bad. Have a very hard time getting my right shoulder down
I have faith in ya Greg
Epiphany on the range yesterday! Never seen anyone mention “look down at the ball”. Head placement/angle was keeping me from the correct side bend and tilt. My head was upright but eyes looking down at the ball so my swing plane although feeling correct was not. I only say this to help if any amateurs out there were missing this very small piece of info.
can you explain further
My eyes were looking more down at the ball rather than my head. Keeping my chin up in the backswing kept me up too tall in the backswing.
Yes. Too much of a gap between chin and left shoulder at the top is generally bad. Also less speed because you won't be using the ground as effectively
Here I am a year later just learning this again haha
Tremendous content!! I am a little confused how this works with the driver? If my driver set up is to have my sternum tilt back away form the ball... how does the side bend work?
Hey Patrick....read through some of the other comments asking about driver I explain
@@CogornoGolf All good. Tks
Basically what where doing is training certain muscle groups to memory where eventually it becomes automatic no thought involved just swing triggers to get the golf swing in motion but of course pre setup to the shot and effect your trying to accomplish
Yep
Eric is this the same for the driver swing, should the shoulder go down for that too. Just a different set up so as to hit up on the ball?
Yes thats correct.
the left shoulder always goes down
But you are looking to replace the forward bend at setup with the side bend in backswing
The shorter the club the more bent over you are at setup so the more left shoulder down to maintain than inclination to the ground
The longer the club (driver) the less forward bend you have at setup (standing taller) so less tilt required to maintain than inclination in backswing
So it always goes down
But less and less as clubs get longer
Thanks for this, fellahs 👍 Does this apply to driver, as well ? Cheers boys, Ken
Yes just not as much
You replace the amount of forward bend at setup with side bend in backswing
So Driver you stand the tallest....the least bent over at setup....so requires less tilt to maintain inclination to ground
Opposite with short iron would need most
@@CogornoGolf Ok, cheers Eric 👍
Hey Eric, I've been through alot of videos with various instructors and you are by far the best one to learn from. I watched the video on stack and tilt while straightening the back leg with Tom Saguto and it worked well for me. My contact is alot more consistent however I hit my shots to the left. I think it maybe due to my downswing. Any thoughts on this? Keep up the good work!
That's really difficult to answer without seeing your swing. Hogan (whom inspired Tom Saguto and many others, Eric c too) did use a weak grip though. If your grip is to strong, the balls would go to the left, using Hogan's method correctly otherwise. But of course, it could be other things too. Whatever it is, I am sure it can be corrected! Kind regards, S
If you have a strong grip and aren't delofting the club (by having your hands ahead of the clubface at impact) you're functionally closing the clubface. The stronger the grip the more lag you need at impact.
Probably releasing the club before hitting the ball.
Thanks for the kind words and support!
Yeah I would need to see your swing on video for sure to say whats going on there....could be several things
Does this apply to driver, as well ?
Yes just not as much
You replace the amount of forward bend at setup with side bend in backswing
So Driver you stand the tallest....the least bent over at setup....so requires less tilt to maintain inclination to ground
Opposite with short iron would need most
Is this swing the same with the Driver ?
Yes, just not as much tilt
You replace the amount of forward bend at setup with side bend in backswing
So Driver you stand the tallest....the least bent over at setup....so requires less tilt to maintain inclination to ground
Opposite with short iron would need the most tilt
If you don't have enough side bend could that lead to excessive forearm rotation and the club face fanning open early in the backswing?
100%
Bingo! And you miss left right fat and thin and occasionally time one perfectly!
Same with driver swing?
Hey Mike!
Yes, just not as much tilt
You replace the amount of forward bend at setup with side bend in backswing
So Driver you stand the tallest....the least bent over at setup....so requires less tilt to maintain inclination to ground
Opposite with short iron would need the most tilt
Is this true for driver?
Yes, just not as much tilt
You replace the amount of forward bend at setup with side bend in backswing
So Driver you stand the tallest....the least bent over at setup....so requires less tilt to maintain inclination to ground
Opposite with short iron would need the most tilt
This has been the missing link to my golf swing. I've been plagued by pulling the left. The "natural" feel of right shoulder replaces the left shoulder doesn't cut it for me. Backswing with good left side bend gets you going back low, get a full turn, then a lowering move of right forearm combined with right side bend, beautiful down the middle shots. Thank you.
Our pleasure, John! Thanks for watching!
I think you've steepened the backswing less than you think. It's more that you're correctly using the internal rotation of the lead shoulder to provide the shallow elements (if you didn't the club would never work behind you) , while the pivot controls the steepening elements. It's not the shoulder that's actually doing the steepening. Yes it's moving down in space, but that's from side bend. There are some options of course for what the lead shoulder actually does vis-a-vis abduction and adduction, but it always lifts the lead arm to some extent, and unless you wanna be like Matt Wolff and do a crazy amount of shallowing in transition it also internally rotates, thus shallowing the shaft. Throughout the golf swing I think it's a good thought to think, body controls steep, shoulders and arms control shallow.
Appreciate the feedback!
Does this cause reverse pivot? How detrimental is that to the swing?
Nope....
You want to move your shoulder down to the point where your head stays in the circle it started in
You can OVER DO or UNDER DO anything in the swing
So of course you always want to film yourself to confirm feels vs reals
ua-cam.com/video/5PyZRor9RGA/v-deo.html
This is great, thank you!
Eric. As a golf instructor, please tell us one thing in golf instruction that you have been dead wrong about before realizing it later. Thanks
Many things :)
@@CogornoGolf give us a example of one that sticks out to you
So why set up with RSB at address (beyond the effect of hand positions on grip) when you want LSB going up to the top? Added benefit of LSB at address is it helps prevent a too inside take away/too flat. Should RSB ONLY be the result of how hands are arranged on the grip?. Also, even though the feel is as demonstrated-sliding left hand down, it is extremely difficult to get that degree of LSB when both hands are on the club.
Bc if you dont your shoulders will be too open at setup (this generally leads to a lack of turn in backswing, lack of hand path depth)
Try setting setting up with your trail shoulder higher than lead......where do your shoulders align?
@@CogornoGolf They might align the opposite to where trail shoulder is lower than lead.
You Eric
👊Thanks for watching, Gordon!
S+T?!
Nope...all swings have to tilt to maintain inclination to ground
