It's always good to have a smaller device to pair with something like the deck, hopefully they can get Linux working properly because that seems to be a huge selling point for a lot of people.
I am of a mixed mind about some of the compromises made in the rp5. I think using 6 gig ram (onchip ram will always be quicker than virtual ram) and not using 13 out of the box really makes the rp5 a harder sell... I mean isnt high end emulation like switch the reason to use a snapdragon? 😂 (I'm seriously not sure...)
Is there any reason you’d suggest I pick up an RP5 if I already have a Steam Deck? I’m considering it but I think the SD is just a better system and the RP5 would just be redundant in my hands.
The steam deck is definitely a much more powerful system, the only reason I would consider it is if you want something to take with you that's smaller, but can still handles PS2 and GameCube emulation.
As someone with a 556 I can say I just didn't enjoy it as much as I would have wanted to. The sticks are still just switch sticks so they don't feel great and having to install gamma OS to fix the snapping issue is a annoying, and the 865 along with the d1100 do perform better than the t820. All that being said the 556 is still a solid option especially for the price, I'm just talking from my perspective why someone might choose this or the 4pro over the 556.
Rp4 pro sticks are so slippery i cant even use it without a thumbstick. And the dpad is tiny cant even use dpad without touching the sticks. Terrible ergonomic device.
"almost same real world performance" is over exaggeration, the rg556 shares the same real world performance as a rp4 base (d900), far below even a rp4 pro, much less the rp5 which should be slightly better than a rp4p. You can't even run GoW2 at 1x at full speed on a rg556/rp4 base without resorting to ee cycle hacks or pal roms, while the rp4p can comfortably run it at 2x, and rp5 should be able to it at 2.5 or even 3x if we lucky. With the launch of rp5, rg556 is no longer worth buying unless you can get it on those aliexpress sale for maybe around 150 USD. The rg556 has always been rp4 base but with better ergo and screen (with the markup for this two).
I am so excited for the mini I was looking for a portable 4 by 3 device I already bought the rp2s and I love it but it’s not to good at ps2 and GameCube which are my favourite systems
I'm quite happy that the RP5 gets LInux support. I don't dislike Android, but I like Linux a whole lot more. As for only 6 GB RAM and Steam on Linux, I have an old laptop that only has 4 GB RAM (dual channel DDR3 @ 1366 MT/s) and runs Debian, and gaming via Steam is fine as long as I stick to older and/or indie games that are low on resources (although mostly due to the iGPU being weak on top of old).
I don't own a Retroid device currently and it looks like I'll continue to not own a Retroid device. I was on the fence of getting a RP4Pro or saving up for an Odin 2 Mini Pro (so that I can get the white model) and then the Retroid Mini was announced. I was excited until the size of the screen was revealed to be 3.7 inches and that it has an all glass panel front which I heavily dislike. If it was a 4 inch screen, I would have been heavily tempted to buy it. Then the RP5 was announced and I was super excited, "Finally! A handheld that is smaller than my Steam Deck that is hopefully more powerful than the RP4Pro that can play most GC & PS2 games at a potentially more affordable price than the AYN Odin 2 Mini". Then that was all washed away when the specs were revealed. Snapdragon 865, 6GB RAM, Android 10... Pretty much killed my excitement. I will not get any of these Retroid devices. It's a real shame because I would love to get that Gamecube colorway of the RP5. I'll save up for the Odin 2 Mini Pro instead although by the time I can afford it, the Odin 3 might already be out by then lol. Wish the Odin 2 Mini had an AMOLED screen but the mini LED screen is good. That price though, ugh
I was very excited for the mini when I first saw it and was even more excited when I saw the design of the RP5. Although the specs were not bad for the mini, it completely turned me off on the RP5. So much so that I just decided to skip this “gen” for Retroid as well.
From what I understand official support for the 865 only goes up to A10 anything past that has to be done by the manufacturer, performance wise it should be similar to the 4pro maybe a little better because of the snap dragon drivers.
Aish the Price point difference between the two, kind of makes the mini's price seem off to me or am I looking at it wrong is the pricing of the RP5 just that good? Good stuff man
Those days are right now. You can literally get a RP3+ for $120 that will handle all your retro needs. If you want something more powerful, you can pay more. Not a difficult concept.
Great video. The only thing i like is bezel less screen, but I dont like the glass front, smudgy and can crack. The cell phone shape and optional official grip was like their signature, they made the grips built in now. I own the 3+, held off the 4 and 4pro because of the screen and trigger issues. I'm gonna wait this one out. I do need an upgrade though, will wait for 4pro price to go on black friday sale, that was the plan after all.
@@toycoma98 thank you for watching I'm glad you liked it. I still have mixed feelings about the glass front, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt because I usually like their handhelds.
Not everything is perfect for these, but there is a lot right! There's a lot of people royally complaining. I too was originally hoping for a SD 7+ Gen 2 device around $230-250, but SD865 makes sense for compatability & price. Taking into account drivers, stability, & development as well. However, I am sure glad they don't have just 6GB of RAM with Android 13 😅 A11 is better with RAM management/less wasteful than 12 & 13. Like 4GB on RP2S & RP4 Base with A11 vs. 8GB on RP4P with A13. And A10 is even more efficient than A11 I think, though it's older & some compatability issues for NS emulation of course as people noted. Another benefit is A10 doesn't have forced Scoped Storage 👏 I have an LG V60 UW with an SD865 currently on Android 10 but it has 8GB of RAM. It's a 2020 phone, but I bought it new in 2023 for $160. Was originally $850 I think. It's still excellent performance & battery wise. The LG V60 has had issues with different Carriers updating Android versions from its original A10: from background audio with the quad DAC to fingerprint sensor unlock causing 100% CPU usage & such... like on A11, A12. Then A13 the hardware isn't as good for it imho, plus I think there is still an audio issue; so A13 works with the LG V60 but generally less efficient & more RAM hungry. This phone works best on the OS it was built around & designed for. And upgrading just hampers the phone's experience/functionality. I wonder if the RP5 & RP Mini would be similar(if not for the benefit/support for NS emulator versions). Also, some carriers force it to upgrade the OS like T-Mobile, linking software OS updates to the Play Store iirc. Some you can block it like Verizon with ADB. Also, another thing I remember researching on the LG V60 Reddit was that the Chinese refurbished units have a board that is locked to not updating from Android 10 🤔 I wonder if those are somehow related to what Retroid is using. Also, I hope we don't run into LG V60 charging port failure issues on the RP Mini or RP5 lol(don't know about board design & manufacturing). That is why I use Wireless Charging on my LG V60. A lot of rambling here. But those are some of my thoughts 👍
@@Ap616 now that you mention the board being locked that could be the reason why it's getting A10 out of the gate, I believe they're working on Android 11 for a 2025 release but that would be a good reason why. I just know for a lot of people the ability to play switch games is a big bonus on handhelds like this, and not having support for those emulators will be a factor for some buyers.
@@AishTalksTech Possibly; just throwing in-depth knowledge around I've gleaned when I got my LG V60 ThinQ 5G UW(stupid mouthful of a device name) phone to see if it makes sense. I heard A13 for 2025, but I haven't been to the Discord in several hours today so that may have changed 😅. Plus, there's always like 100's & 1000's of comments to glean through when I return hours later lol. I would rather have A10(or probably more A11 for NS) than A13 personally, but I am probably in the minority. I honestly don't know if 14 is better than 13 for efficiency & ram. I've heard 14 & 15 are more annoying for side loading apps. I don't want Android to turn into iOS... Oh, for sure. If having A10 holds back the NS emulation capability with old crappy versions & whatnot, that definitely leaves consumers & potential consumers disgruntled. 6GB isn't the worst for A10 or A11. But A13 like the RP4 Pro... yeah no, should be 8GB imo if they are planning on jumping to A13 next year.
@@AishTalksTech Yep, I didn't care about that point of contention much, so it's a moot point for me. Sounds like marketing damage control, trying to save face lol. Though I'm not wholly against 6GB for A10(& maybe A11), but with A13 I would be if it's getting upgraded to that & not A11... 8GB would be nice to have regardless with any of those versions, but I am less hateful than others about it I guess lol
Until they leap forward and begin playing PS3/Xbox/360 7th gen games I'll be sticking with RP4P. I don't see the point in upgrading if it's playing the same game library ceiling.
Im gonna say this here -> lottttt of people are realllly not understanding what an overclocked 865 with active cooling will be. My lg v60 (865 chip with 6gb ram lol) overclocked is about 30-40% more powerful than stock; though heat is the issue I deal with on it. All ps2 games on 2x; gamecube emulation on 3x and android 10 isnt really that big of a deal for my use cases lol. I think switch emulation is kind of still out of the question for most games. Given the nature of how similar (ON PAPER) the stock dimensity 1100 and 865 are; it sure would be similar for them to spend a lot of money to swap SOC architecture for literally no power gains. Even if the chipset is shipped out "stock" then we're looking at CFW's allowing overclocking anyway. Im not a retroid fan boy; I dont own any of their products; but I do know what an 865 overclocked does, and its a sleeping giant for sure.
Overclocking is definitely going to help but the d1100 on the 4 pro isnt running at stock clocks either, we're really going to have to wait and see what retroid does before we can really talk about the performance difference, but as it is right now on paper there isn't much of a boost.
Well the Odin 2 is going to be bigger and more powerful so if you want the best comparability the Odin 2 is the clear winner, the only thing the rp5 could do better is the oled screen and that's it's a little smaller if that matters to you. Basically if budget is not an issue the odin2 is going to win in almost every category, if an oled screen and the dpad placement matter to you and you're ok with less performance but still great PS2 and GameCube comparability then yeah the rp5 makes sense, if not the Odin 2 is the clear winner.
Appreciate that! I was leaning toward the Odin2! My Odin light is sweet but I want to play a full GameCube seamlessly! I do love the look and all glass front of the ro5 but my eyes have been on the odin2 since launch!

I don't think there's a pro version of this one coming, after the disaster of the 3 and 3+ retroid has been announcing both the main models together. The mini and the rp5 is all we are getting for now and maybe a lower end device later on.
Dimensity 1100 is a generic chipset and “ Qualcomm SnapDragon is name brand chipset The current SnapDragon 865 is what the Retroid pocket 5 is using but the Retroid pocket 6 will have the new” SnapDragon!! “ Qualcomm!!
Thanks aish. I think the android 10 thing is a little odd. My wife has a OnePlus 8t which uses the 865 and it is currently running android 14 so retroid mentioning that its a Qualcomm issue and not their issue is a little strange. Anyway great job 🙂. Im looking forward to this launch
OEM did the Android 14 update on your wife's phone, not Qualcomm which only officially supports Android 10 for the 865 atm. Retroid is either too small to do such an update or they don't believe it's cost effective. That said, Retroid claims the 865 will receive official Android 13 support in 2025.
Im really not a fan of a phone/tablet and a controller as a man device, even though I love playing call of duty on my ipad with a g8 at the end of the day a dedicated device is the way to go for me.
It boogles my mind that they're putting out a new device like this. Why would you not just go for the Odin 2? Sure, it is more expensive, but it's such a much more powerful device. Judging by these minimal upgrades, Retroid won't catch up to those specs for a few more generations.
At those prices why not get a steam deck? There will always be that better more powerful thing but for a lot of people 200 bucks is about the cut off line for emulation devices like these. It's not about price to performance or buying the best thing. They just want to play some old games without breaking the bank...
I feel you but I dont get it lol you can find tablets or phones with this chip and larger screens for cheaper and a one stop shop use you can carry in your pocket that you carry anyways so its a hard pass but love your enthusiasm
So people just prefer a dedicated device vs using touch controls or carrying a controller around, but for those that don't mind a phone or a tablet is a great choice.

@@AishTalksTech yeah 865 made it so they could keep the price point, but idk why they went with less ram even though it will have 4gb extra vram. Again thanks for the vid Aish good to hear your take on it all
Why when you retire it?! Like I have the same phone and i just put a 500 gig sd card in there and downloaded emulation station (es-de) still works as a phone but I can just connect an 8bitdo controller and play a ton of games anywhere
Yeah, I retired mine over a S23 because after 3 years the battery wasn't holding more than 4 hours of screen time. Not worth changing it for me. Unfortunately the SD865 is boderline not enough for running PS2, snapdragon 8 gen 2 on the other hand, runs it flawlessly. I got a D8 gamepad from china for playing switch and PS2 and it's awesome.
problem with using certain phones as a gaming handheld is they can get underclocked and performance slows down when the device gets hot. theres no active cooling
I had a S20fe with SD865 and it is boderline NOT enough for running PS2. A missed opportunity for this to actually be worth 200 usd. Also, 3.7 is too small. 4 inches would be the barely minimum. I have an anbernic RG40xx H which I paid 49 usd and can play up to dreamcast nicely, not to mention many native linux games including Half Life 2 and portal. For 5 times its price I'd want a device that could play ps2. I rather just use my phone with a DSP8 controller for the games my RG40xx can't play.
The 865 isn't a bad chip but it's also not a huge improvement, I'll wait and see what kind of optimizations Retroid can do because with active cooling and overclocking we could get much better performance then what phones can do, just look at the Odin 1 with it's overclocked 845 vs regular SD 845 phones.
We dont need to wait to see this device fail. 6GB ram more like 4-4.5 GB RAM. 128 GB storage better grab your wallet for another 256-512GB $50-60 Micro SD card so you can actually install some emulators and games. Android 10? They develop these custom roms for their devices regardless, so why aren't they requesting support from Qualcomm on this. Oh, because Retroid or any of these companies don't certify their devices because they know they won't get approved. Snapdragon 865 could be worse, but it could be at least the 888 or 8 Gen 1, which screw the price as people will buy it regardless if it performs well. I have already seen so many say "nope just bought an Odin 2 or Odin 2 Mini" when they seen the specs if the RP5. So people have money, sure we all like to be cheap but where there's cheap, there is well CHEAP. Sure for the fan boys that like the ergonomics of symmetrical joysticks will like this over the Odin 2 but they better do this one good because I always had issues with my finger placement on the 4 Pro despite liking it. Oh and that battery, it'll be good for Super Nintend and some PSX but 5000mAh common Retroid make it at least 6000mAh to give us an extra hour. The only thing this ALMOST made me want it for is the looks, and Retroid is really good at making their devices look good on paper. However every single Retroid I owned through the years whether it was the 3 needing new membranes, flip with its broken hinges, and 4 series with bad springs I'm wondering what broken thing this will have. That's all I have to say for now 😂
From what I understand the 865 only had support up to android 10, phone that got updates to android 13/14 were done by the manufacturer and Retroid is saying they're working on an update but it won't be ready until sometime in 2025. I really hope they can get that done sooner because A10 is a big let down. There's already a better device and for people that already have an Odin 2/mini theres no point in getting this. Thanks for watching and commenting I really appreciate it 😁
@@AishTalksTech hey no problemo! I just like to make these things known and for others not to impulse buy because they love Retroid so much. I too LOVED Retroid until this. They had me up in arms with the so called 4/4Pro but I still got them both to support the company and to test the performance. However I don't need to do any of this with this device, and if I want to play on an OLED anything I have 2 TV's plus 2 monitors I could hook up to.
These just make me want the Odin 2 mini. I wish it cost a bit less though.
The Odin 2 mini is definitely more powerful but power isn't everything, I'm excited to see how it compares
Thank you Aish! This was extremely useful 😊
Thank you for watching and I'm glad I could help.
I am so excited for the mini I was looking for a portable 4 by 3 device I already bought the rp2s and I love it but it’s not to good at ps2 and GameCube which are my favourite systems
May I ask can the device be connected to hdmi for tv layout?
Yes it can, it should work with a USB C to HDMI adapter or with a dock.
Normally that's enough for Linux but steam doesn't run natively on arm so we have to use box 86 and that's going to use up resources too.
To be fair the rp4 pro does play most GameCube and PS2 games but if you can save up for the Odin 2 or mini that's going to be a better device.
I was very excited for the mini when I first saw it and was even more excited when I saw the design of the RP5. Although the specs were not bad for the mini, it completely turned me off on the RP5. So much so that I just decided to skip this “gen” for Retroid as well.
That's fair I'm glad we're at a point where devices are getting so good the fomo doesn't completely take over.
I’m curious how much the price will drop on the 4 pro in response to the 5
For the used market it should drop considerably, new maybe $20 ish USD.
I'm confused. Why android 10?
So will the mini play GC and PS2 better than the RP4 Pro?
I'd like to see a comparison of those devices.
From what I understand official support for the 865 only goes up to A10 anything past that has to be done by the manufacturer, performance wise it should be similar to the 4pro maybe a little better because of the snap dragon drivers.

Thank you!
Aish the Price point difference between the two, kind of makes the mini's price seem off to me or am I looking at it wrong is the pricing of the RP5 just that good? Good stuff man
It's that good I was really surprised they were priced that close.
What grinds Aish’s gears?
Too many things that would be an 8hr video essay...
I miss the days of Retroids for ~$120 USD
I hope they release a cheap device later on, something to keep the 2 line going.
Those days are right now. You can literally get a RP3+ for $120 that will handle all your retro needs. If you want something more powerful, you can pay more. Not a difficult concept.
Nah get 2S @@GlitteredUp4Easter
Awesome!!
I heard no switch emulation on rp5 cos of android 10. 😩
It's going to be released with android 13 so that shouldn't be an issue anymore.
Not everything is perfect for these, but there is a lot right! There's a lot of people royally complaining. I too was originally hoping for a SD 7+ Gen 2 device around $230-250, but SD865 makes sense for compatability & price. Taking into account drivers, stability, & development as well. However, I am sure glad they don't have just 6GB of RAM with Android 13 😅
A11 is better with RAM management/less wasteful than 12 & 13. Like 4GB on RP2S & RP4 Base with A11 vs. 8GB on RP4P with A13. And A10 is even more efficient than A11 I think, though it's older & some compatability issues for NS emulation of course as people noted. Another benefit is A10 doesn't have forced Scoped Storage 👏
I have an LG V60 UW with an SD865 currently on Android 10 but it has 8GB of RAM.
@@Ap616 they're saying it's going to have memory swap but it's not going to be as good as just having the 8gb of ram
@@Ap616 word is that it will get the update just no confirmation on when yet.
Until they leap forward and begin playing PS3/Xbox/360 7th gen games I'll be sticking with RP4P.
I don't see the point in upgrading if it's playing the same game library ceiling.
That won't happen anytime soon with arm base handhelds, for PS3/Xbox/360 the only option for now and probably for a while is x86.
theres a lot of ps2 games that arent playable, they arent the popular ones, but still
linux drivers for adreno 650 do have vulkan 1.3 support
I know there's support but I haven't seen them in aether for Linux, at least not in jelOS or rocknix.
@@AishTalksTech you would see it only on s922x builds as thats the only platform supported by rocknix that offers vulkan on linux.
Sorry not sure if u we’re aware? but 4GB of the internal storage, can be allocated to use as virtual ram. Bringing the total ram up to 10GB.
I added it later on in the video that should help with the HD texture issue but it would have been better to just get the 8gb of ram
The RAM eing 6gb is a nonissue as you can set an additional 4gb virtual ram with android and it works great.
True memory swap should help guess we'll have to wait and see once it's released.

Great content! I’d like more of this. Thank you, sir.

On the fence between the RP5 and AynOdin2! Help a brotha out
Well the Odin 2 is going to be bigger and more powerful so if you want the best comparability the Odin 2 is the clear winner, the only thing the rp5 could do better is the oled screen and that's it's a little smaller if that matters to you.

If the mini was like $150, then yeah i might have bought it.
But the orice difference is like $10-20 between the Mini and RP5... I think i will pass these two and like 1 week until we get RP6😅😂
I think a lot of people are going to wait on reviews before deciding on this one.
I have a feeling that they will release a RP5Pro with 12 or 16 gigabytes of RAM and a better processor.
I don't think there's a pro version of this one coming, after the disaster of the 3 and 3+ retroid has been announcing both the main models together. The mini and the rp5 is all we are getting for now and maybe a lower end device later on.

Thanks for watching and I agree it is odd and I hope they can fix that.
OEM did the Android 14 update on your wife's phone, not Qualcomm which only officially supports Android 10 for the 865 atm. Retroid is either too small to do such an update or they don't believe it's cost effective. That said, Retroid claims the 865 will receive official Android 13 support in 2025.

I don't think retroid has any intentions of ever matching what Ayn makes they're in different budget categories.
if pcsx2 can run through box86 on linux with it, then it's ideal for me. if not, i will be sad

Same chip as my samsung galaxy 20fe. I should make this old dog a gaming phone when I retire it this year.
Thanks for your perspectives
It's a solid chip and that's a solid phone, just get a good controller and have a good time.
Why when you retire it?! Like I have the same phone and i just put a 500 gig sd card in there and downloaded emulation station (es-de) still works as a phone but I can just connect an 8bitdo controller and play a ton of games anywhere
The phone variant is heavily underclocked and temperature limited though. It's probably closer to an S21.
Snapdragon 865 was a good chip in 2020 when it was in the Galaxy S20. This sort of feels like a Nintendo handheld.. Outdated hardware.
