242: De CLAY Studio

- Every now and then, something comes along that immediately arrests your attention as something special. Something amazing that you really, really want, and would be willing to work many extra hours to afford it. It’s been a while since that happened, but now I can present my latest fruit of my my labours… the De CLAY Studio 1:35 Tyrannosaurus Rex.
Over the years it’s been my privilege to get to know different artists all over the world. De CLAY Studio hails from Hanoi, Vietnam, making it my first connection in the area. They produce prehistoric fauna in the 1:20 and 1:35 scales, and while this T Rex is available in 1:20, I prefer the smaller scale especially due to lack of space.
The most striking effect of this model are the amazing colours. The sheer complexity and translucency of the layers is amazing to behold, and help create something out of living flesh and blood. Add to that the bulky form currently so popular, and lips to boot, and you have a winner through and through!
If you’re a fan of the current T Rex morph, the Blue Rhino or Prehistoric Planet T Rexes, and of course, lips and the depiction of this apex predator in a moment of peace, minding its own business, this model is one you have to check out!

The scars are a nice touch to this model!
Fun fact, scars on animals are usually dark, or black because of exposure to sunlight during the healing process.
White scars (or hypopigmentation scars) are caused by the loss of pigment cells in the upper layers of the skin, usually due to picking or gouging out the pigment cells during the healing process.

You know your wound healing! 👍 Yes, I suggested to Duy that the scar would look nicer if it was darker. Plus white may sometimes look like a scuff mark. Most people probably would be happy asking De CLAY to simply not include them! 😁
Currently painting up the kit version. The guys over at de clay are extremely talented and overall great people.

For sure! I'm always keen to support and help raise awareness of many less well-known but really good sculptors and paleoartists, if they have a good attitude and treat people kindly, which De Clay has proven to be. My friend asked them many, many questions and they answered them all. There are many well-known sculptors who are arrogant and rude, and those don't need our money lol!

I've thus far limited myself to production figures, but the resin models are really becoming more and more tempting.
Sometimes the comparison between production figures and resin models is day and night

I believe they used to make more expensive statues long, long ago. But I think that's an avenue they've left behind. Given how expensive they cost outside of Asia, I think something like this would be too painful for many people to afford 😔
That paint job is a thing of beauty! The bulk and musculature is heavily emphasized. Also I like how the teeth aren't completely concealed and the tips are exposed. The amber eyes are very characterful.
This is THE best T.rex to date!
It's certainly the most beautifully painted one I have, and that's saying a lot since it's a hard fight with my Monarch T Rex. But with the updated form and bulk, this one takes the crown. I think it's safe to say that my craving (not to mention funds!!) for a high quality T Rex has been sated (for now!)

The total attention detail can not go unnoticed. I love the comparison of the old renderings and the new renderings. 😮 The model was really cool.

Duy is such a talent! I started my new 1/35th collection with this model and I absolutely love it. I also have the DeClay triceratops and their Quetzalcoatlus. Both are superb, highly recommended.
You have more money than I then! 😁 I like the Triceratops sculpt, but I haven't seen a paintjob yet that would match this T Rex. That Quetzalcoatlus though! I really like that one! It is certainly on my radar for sure!
Did not expect this at all! What a pleasant surprise to see such a high quality review on this masterpiece. Its incredibly beautiful. If I would collect carnivores I would‘ve totally done everything possible to get me one of those!
Yes this was totally unexpected and I had to work extra hard for it, but it was worth it! The beauty of the paintjob is perfect proof that artists can make such a big impact. There is something hauntingly translucent and real about the layers De Clay have laid down here. Truly a wonder.

You are most welcome! Had to save up a bit for this. I am always happen to raise awareness of really good paleoartists who are less well-known, but do great work and are also nice people to work with. There are many of these who do even better work than more well-known, but also arrogant artists out there, and I hope to promote _them_ instead.

This model is absolutely beautiful. I’d order it myself, but don’t have the money. I’d love to see this model though with the WWD T Rex pattern on it.
Actually, if you ever pull the trigger on this, talk to Duy and see if that would be possible. They might custom paint for you for an extra nominal sum. But this one I loved straightaway and didn't see the need to get custom. Indeed I fell in love with the colour before I did the sculpt!

Beautiful model! Yes especially in Tyrannosaurus rex models, well painted eyes are IMPORTANT!
I have had so many disappointments from cross-eyes! My friend kept emphasizing this to De Clay Studio when he communicated with them! 🤣
Pretty awesome! And the 1:35 scale isn’t a bad price. For me though, mostly because I’m not a huge fan of the teeth poking out past the lips, I’m going to stick with my Rebor Kiss for now. So glad you’re reviewing resin models though. It gives insight into other options for us collectors.
I’m not either, but I can get past it for the simple beauty of the figure, though I’d also 100% prefer to see no visible teeth unless it was the slightly open mouth version.

Thanks mate! I do have some resin kits, but I don't buy many. Due to cost of course, but also space. Resin kits don't just get put on any shelf, they have to go behind a shelf with a screen or door, and I am almost all out. I'm certainly keen to help bring awareness to worthy model makers who are doing good work, have a good attitude, and are less well-known.

Favorite T.rex sculpture to date where its lipped but not like completely. I think its the best asthetic for modern depictions instead of always assuming dinosaurs are fully lipped or feathered even though both hypothesis are about as accurate the latter.
Certainly, I think htis is a very nice compromise! Right now it's any body's guess though from what I've read, I believe they _had_ some type of cover at least. But this model is too beautiful that whether lipped or unlipped I would have been happy!

Exactly! It's actually what I would like, since scientifically I believe they were lipped, but aesthetically I prefer the unlipped depictions. This is the best of both worlds!

"Enough money" is the key! I'm pretty much out for resin kits, and I haven't seen a paint application yet on the same level of this T Rex, so I have to stay on the sidelines. I hope to see other people review their Triceratops!

This one is certainly below the usual size of what you usually showcase, but the 1:20 defnitely belongs. I hope to see that one on your channel too! 😁😁
What a masterpiece this is! Sculpt, color, pose, and size-this is undoubtedly one of the best figures I've ever seen. And I've seen some online photos of this, but seeing it like this makes it much more appealing. This will be a fine addition to your collection, my dear sir. For sure! It really overshadows quite a lot of the other T Rexes! I have to get that dream shelf made one day, maybe within five years! In that shelf, this and the Martin Garrett Monarch will stand side by side! You can see just how beautifully painted both are!
this is probbaly my favorite depiction of tyrannosaurus in model form. sadly i cannot justify buying it for that price, so i will just have to hope PNSO eventually makes an updated wilson just as great as this one
Sorry for the late reply, but you probably know about Cameron by now. It's still not as bulky as this one, and fully unlipped, and of course the paint apps won't be as refined as this one. But price-wise I think it would be a better consideration. I hope if PNSO ever does another Wilson, they do give us everything! 😁

Exactly! Scientifically, I believe it had lips. Aesthetically, I prefer unlipped. This is the best of both worlds!

It is beautiful. I love the paint scheme. Very natural and believable, imo. I am a believer that most large dinosaurs had drab coloring, much like our current animal kingdom. Most large animals are just not very colorful. Probably cause they would stick out like a sore thumb in the greens and browns and tans of our natural world.
I also favour a more limited colour palette for large animals, which is why I recently passed on the yellow version of the HLG Apatosaurus. Some colour accents are always desirable however. For models it's easier to go the other way and then have no points of visual interest at all, such as EoFauna's earliest efforts. This one even with such a 'limited' range of colours, has it applied in so many subtle layers with so much complexity, that shows you you can still have both!
As a Vietnamese, I am really surprised that in my country there are such quality dinosaur sculpture/model brands, I'm sure I've never heard of "Declay" until I saw your vid
I'm pleased to hear it! One of the things I like to do is to showcase less known but worth artists, and importantly, are nice people who talk to customers politely and honestly. There are quite a few, and many of them have real passion and dedication to do what they do. I hope my little videos can help bring them some recognition 😁

Yeah I had to work quite a lot of extra hours to afford this! But that doesn't help me with the sleeping problem you mention 😁 That's why I dont buy so many resin kits. Not only are they costly, I also need a specific shelf with a door or window to have them, and I have all but run out of these!
Gotta ask brother, any idea what's happening at PNSO? Is the hiring of a CEO the reasopn why new releases seem to be slowing? Great review as always.

To answer your question, any time there is a transition in the top position, you can definitely expect some changes in management, as well as strategy. Some will be good, some will be bad. And that's all from a certain point of view. There are rumours on the Chinese forums of course, but much of it just hearsay and I don't really bother with them. The proof as they say is in the pudding. Let's see how it tastes over the course of the year.

I think there is more and more acceptance now that while almost all dinosaurs had lips, T-rex may have been an exception. The size and position of its teeth and jaw structure just don't suggest a lipped covering unlike other therapods

I don't know about speak, but he can communicate with you with his IG messaging. So if you wanted to ask his questions, specify certain things, it should be fine!
The color scheme is better than pnso cameron but de clay's t rex lacks the beautiful intricate skin texture of cameron. The proportion and musculature of cameron is unmatched. A partial lipped t rex is not my favorite. Its either lipped or no lipped. I feel that many theropods are lipped but for t rex there might be an exception, the jury is still out there.
Interesting. I would have thought that out of all the theropods, the ones that most would consider for possible exception would the spinosaurids. Let's see what how the debates unfold as time moves on!
The deClay is a completely different aesthetic, and some might argue that at that size a model would actually be smoother. I enjoy both it both ways though, since I'm not really super strict on this 😁😁

How idiotic this model looks to you will obviously depend largely on where you stand in the lip vs lipless debate. I'm not emotionally attached to either, so I enjoy it as one of my favourite models. Check the links to contact the artist for pricing.
