133: PNSO Parade - The Theropods

  • PNSO’s given us a rash of theropods and it’s time to do a stocktake!
I was starting to feel discombobulated with so many theropods that it was time to sort out which was which, what clades were present and which were missing... all in one video.
I’ve tried to include all the theropods I have that belong to more or less the same scale and quality, and also included some general scales. Scales are tricky because it really depends on what the adult size reference was. Still I hope it will be useful to see what dinosaurs PNSO has offered, and whether they will more or less fit with your collection, if you are strict about your scale.
This was a very fun project and it’s nice to see just how diverse the theropods were. I also hope you enjoy seeing how PNSO’s models have evolved over time, and maybe this video helps you make a decision on a model you’ve been wondering about.

PNSO, you should do a Dilophosaurus. It's my favorite dinosaur, and no companies have yet done a dilophosaurus figure incorporating the new evidence. (I believe collectA did it, but it has really oversized feet and a weird paint app.) Preferably with quills or protofluff along the neck

They're not for sale. I'm a collector, not a reseller. You should still be able to buy Yutyrannus although I can't speak as to the quality of the paint job now, which unfortunately does suffer in late run production models.

Yeah I really wish they could have some variety. There _are_ other types of patterning, and PNSO has actually had something different. Example I love the reticulated pattern on their Lambeosaurus. At least some of their stripes like on the Acrocanthosaurus and the Lingwulong they have varied it a bit, but on theropods I hope for something different!

@@napadaanlng69 That is not possible to give a definitive answer. It depends on what you want in your models. For me personally, it's a tripod of scientific accuracy, sculpted detail, and paint application. There are also other factors such as cost.
For an example of some things you might consider, check out my video comparing the Nanmu and W-Dragon Allosaurus here.

3:13 well, T. rex as far as we know didn’t have feathers. Feathers is just speculation, so there’s nothing wrong in the slightest about pnso. It’s much better than the safari. Sure the safari has feathers, but that doesn’t make it any more accurate. In fact it makes it less accurate if anything Becuase we have found skin impressions of tyrannosaurus showing scales so the only thing we know for a fact is that it didn’t have feathers in some parts of the body like the tail (which is fully feathered in safaris rex). Also the type of feathering on safaris rex is wrong. If it did have feathers they would have been protofeathers, looking more like fuzzy fur, not the dromeosaur like feathers on the safari rex.
And while yes the safari rex is chinky you can’t tell me the pnso rex isn’t. Plus the safari rex has a more jp inspired head and the pnso rex has a more accurate skull shape. Sooo no the safari rex isn’t more up to date it’s just a slightly more innacurate Jurassic park T. rex.
Edit: sorry for my rant btw I just wanna make sure y’all know that’s all 😊

There's nothing _wrong_ with the PNSO, as they have reconstructed it to their interpretation and understanding of the current material. I merely remark for those who like the full plumage look that the Safari one might be what they're looking for. There are many reasons why the CollectA and Wild Safari full-feathered one is nice but very unlikely, as I explained in reply to another viewer before. The fully-feathered versions were representative of some the ideas going round at that time, and as such represent current thought of that period. I'm always happy to have a model that while out of date _relative to the knowledge of today_ , was at the forefront of theory at speculation _of the time_.
On what basis do you cite the inaccuracies in the Safari Rex head, and suggest it's inspiration from JP? Doug Watson is a very well-respected sculptor known for his meticulous research? IIRC, Doug took as a base FMNH PR 2081 and I see most of the features of that skull respected here.
You seem to interpret my favouring one at the expense of the other. I merely point out differences and areas that might be of interest to collectors, and my viewers have heard me mention numerous times that I may well be mistaken in any aspect, even in anatomy. They can of course still choose their preferences and make their purchases accordingly. 🙂
