  • If you shoot landscape, product, architecture, portrait or just about any photography using a tripod, you use an L-Bracket. In this video, I will save you from making the mistake of buying a standard L-Bracket for your Canon EOS R5 or R6.
    I purchased all three l-brackets used in this video with my own money. There was no input from any companies mentioned.

    Thanks for posting this, Rob. I went on to order the ProMedia Gear bracket, and have just fitted it. Thanks to you, I feel I have chosen wisely!

    I purchased this L-Bracket for my R5 about 9 months ago and it has been living on my camera ever since. I was very impressed with the overall engineering on this bracket. My only minor complaint is that I can't use it on my Heipi travel tripod without adding an extra ARCA plate. From some reason, the grooves on this bracket are just a tad too narrow for the Heipi quick release plate to grab. When I add a small ARCA plate This is not a huge deal as it works fine with my other tripods/ball heads.

    Superb review. New owner R6 ii., cannot imagine using the lesser brackets you discussed. Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. 😊

    I have the 3 Legged Thing L bracket for my R6. It cost me £30, is finished in an orange colour, it comes with a tool to tighten all fixings and works very well.

    The Promedia gear L bracket for with battery grip looks pretty awesome too. I haven't bought it yet, but I have decided on it because of the offset. Also, my Promedia gear tripod is the best I've EVER owned

    Totally agree! RRS & others have failed miserably. ProMediaGear's L-bracket is far superior!

    Pro media gear has the WORST customer service!!! The bottom screws on my plate stripped and they wanted me to BUY new screws! I’ve only had the thing for a year!!! I had to fight with them to get them to finally send me the screws! A MUCH BETTER alternative to an L bracket is the Attoll Rotating collar by Silence Corner! Works SUPERIOR to an L bracket, no issues with the flip screen, and the center of your lens will NEVER MOVE when changing orientation!!! AVOID PROMEDIAGEAR!!! TERRIBLE!!!!

    Thanks Rob - I know you can extend the bracket out, but does it create problems with access to the lens release button?
    You're right about Sunway. Worked perfectly on my Mark IV.
    Surprised that the RRS bracket has the same issue as the Sunway. And over priced at that.

      Extending the bracket doesn’t get in the way with anything, no. My only complaint with it extended is how wide it gets.

    I appreciate the video and the PMG bracket is good, but does have a couple of drawbacks that it could not overcome.
    First, it makes the camera considerably more bulky. For example, it’s much more difficult to fit into a backpack with it on. The R5 is not small to begin with; this makes it squarely in the large category. Also, the protruding left side of the bracket gets snagged on things easily. It essentially creates a giant hook on the side of the camera.
    Second, the bracket gets in the way of interacting with the lens. If you have a manual lens (which if you aren’t adapting vintage lenses to your R5, you’re missing out!), changing apertures is now much more difficult with your left hand. Mounting and removing any type of lens is also more difficult because it blocks your hand being able to rotate the lens in the mount and pressing the release button can only be done from limited angles.
    And a minor quibble is a traditional bracket protects the camera’s left side better, IMHO.
    I returned the PMG. I replaced it with the 3 Legged Thing Roxie-G. It does limit the screen marginally, but I find I can use the flip screen well enough 90% of the time.
    To each their own, but I found the PMG created more problems for me than it solved.

      @robcoventry574  2 роки тому

      Valid points. The trade off for the extra width for me was worth not worrying about my flip screen accidentally getting damaged.

      Same here, trying to get the RRS but they out of stock, friend got the pmg one and changing lens a pain and pmg doesnt make a regular one they only offer an offset one or I would get that one.

    As a landscape photographer, I hate this design as it changes the distance of the entrance pupil to the centre of rotation of my tripod whenever I swop from portrait to lansdscape & vice versa - which is why I got the l bracket in the first place!

    Good video. Can you give me your opinion about how sturdy the bracket is? I intend to attach my BlackRapid strap to a single point on the vertical section of the bracket. Do you think the bracket could safely support my Canon R5 and heavy L70-200 f2.8? Thanks

    Markins also makes L-Brackets for the R5 or R6 (but it's as expensive as the ProMediaGear one). 🤔

      I didn't know this, thanks for bringing it up. I have had a Markins ballhead and L bracket for my 5D MK 3 for about 10 years and love them both. Great products. I'll have to see what the shape is of their L bracket for the R6 Mk2

    Thanks for the video. I am wondering how the offset vertical works with lens controls and being able to easily connect shutter control wire. Can you speak to this?

    • @robcoventry574
      @robcoventry574  2 роки тому

      Hi, Bill. The bracket has an ability to extend that I did not cover in the video. Because of this ability to extend in addition to the offset, there is no problem accessing the shutter release cable port, audio ports, or any other controls in vertical or horizontal mode. You just adjust how much extension needed to access the ports desired.

    Good day! Thanks for the video :)
    What you can recommend from Smallrig for hold type C cable on R6 with L-plate?

    • @robcoventry574
      @robcoventry574  2 роки тому +1

      Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching.
      I personally have not tried Smallrig's L-Bracket for R5. However, it is quite similar to the bracket I originally purchased. Lacking the offset creates a challenge for both the tilt-flip and a Type C cable that you would attach. My Promedia bracket has both an offset that allows tilt-flip free motion and also an extension arm that frees room for type C cables or microphone/headphone cables.

  • @bill29456
    @bill29456 2 роки тому +1

    Hey Rob: The only issue I see with the offset bracket is that you cant use the ND adapter on the R5. The bracket is exactly where the filter slides in and out. FYI

    • @robcoventry574
      @robcoventry574  2 роки тому

      You must be referring to the adapter that fits between the lens and the camera. I don’t have one. Unless that slides in and out from the left side, it would still work. In fact, it can be extended quite a bit. Otherwise, yes. You are right.

    What happens when you still need to use your PD capture clip?

    • @robcoventry574
      @robcoventry574  11 місяців тому

      I assume you mean power delivery/capture for recording externally and using the cable clip that Canon includes with the camera. Yes. This L-bracket makes that all possible. Standard L-brackets will get in the way of any cabling for external record, power, audio, or visual. This L-Bracket is completely out of the way and can be adjusted further away as required.

    What if you shoot panos using a measured no parallax point - if you go from horizontal to vertical using this L bracket - now you have to recalculate the no parallax point? Hmm. Not sure about this L bracket.
