    In one of your previous videos you were demonstrating the Peak Design clip for your camera, I bought one and find it very useful especially when hiking around, I then realised that if I wanted to shoot vertical I had to remove the clip and fit my L bracket. Have been searching for some time for an L bracket that I can attach my PD clip. I wasn't even aware of cages for camera's. Many thanks for sharing, another thing to buy for my camera

    That's brilliant! I cut out the side part of the L bracket on mine so I could rotate the screen on my A7 IV and then realized that I could not mount it on the tripod in portrait any longer. I thought I ruined a perfectly good L bracket. Now I have a solution to revive that L bracket. Thanks!

    Hi Mike, I like your Frankenbracket! I just purchased the Atoll S and the Atoll X for my Sony A7IV. Another reviewer pointed out that he had vibration issue with the original Atoll when shooting Milky Way. I've mounted both and found the X is more stable but there's still some vibration. The X does allow for much larger lenses now, up to 90mm diameter. My primary lens is the Tamron 35-150 and I can easily get to the lens release button. I do shot Milky Way with a Sony 14mm, so the vibration issue is a concern. My testing has only been in my office on a Benro Rhino tripod and a hardwood floor, mother earth may provide a little more damping. I'm going to build your recommendation and see how that compares. Practicality definitely wins over beauty. I appreciate both of your reviews on L-Brackets! Thanks a million! Buying the bracket and clip via your links. We you get a commission if the US Amazon is used?

    @Mike Smith Sincere thanks for making this video. I'd already bought an L-bracket for my flippy screen Canon R7 and just couldn't get on with it, what with the screen being impeded and it only having one anchor point (going out of alignment too easily). I've now got a SmallRig cage thanks to your suggestion and it's so much better. The camera body is already very compact, so I don't feel the cage makes it uncomfortably large to keep on all the time. By the way, for anchoring in an Arca-Swiss clamp in portrait orientation, I've found the (new-ish) two-bolt offset SmallRig plate no. 3154 fits perfectly (18mm centre to centre bolt spacing). Having two bolts, it won't loosen and get out of alignment like a one-bolt plate. Thanks again!

  • @warricksmith5178
    @warricksmith5178 Рік тому +1

    Interesting workaround, Mike. I've used SmallRig L-brackets for over 2 years on Fuji X-S10 & X-H2 (both of which have flippy screens). Yes, it does involve a bit more futzing around to use the flippy screen when you shoot in Horizontal formats on a tripod (less so in Vertical), but with practice I've found there is plenty of room to maneuver without a lot of hassle. Indeed, when I'm shooting from a tripod there is usually less urgency than when shooting handheld for street photography or other genres, and in the latter cases it is easy enough to remove the bracket. A cage also expands the overall footprint of the camera, which might be an issue in some circumstances.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому

      That is true Warrick, I suppose it is what you get used to and what you have to hand. The great thing with photography is that there are so many different ways to get the same result, so it is great that we can customise these cameras in so many different ways.

I struggle when using my L bracket when I need the side door open on my A7iv to plug in my intervalometer for astro photography plus it does get in the way of the flip screen as you show even when the bracket is extended out. • @erikladefoged6108
    @erikladefoged6108 Рік тому +1

    Hi Mike, thanks for a nice solution. I have the A7IV and also the L-bracket. I fully subscribe to the issues you raise using the L-bracket. My main fear has been to damage the flip screen by accidentally pushing or trapping it while turning the camera around or the like. Following your solution I purchased the half-cage and plate. So far it has only been tried out at home. However, I find there is one additional drawback to the half-cage solution. And that's when using my manual lenses, the Voigtlander 110mm, Lensbaby Burnside 35mm, and Samyang 35mm f1.2. These lenses all have the aperture ring close to the flange where the lens is attached to the camera. For my lenses and similarly constructed lenses the part of the the half-cage and the vertical plate protruding from the front of the camera makes manipulating the aperture ring a bit of a nuisance. So, while I agree to your 99% 'points' for the flipscreen and port access solution, for manual lens operation it's 30% in mý assessment. The flip screen solution does outweigh the other negatives, hence I keep the half-cage, but suggest Smallrig search for an even better solution.

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for letting me know Erik.
      I just checked out the Voigtlander 110 and I see what you mean.
      I only have Tamron and Sony lenses, so I wasn't aware of this so that is great to know.
      I suppose you could put the quick release plate further back, but then it gets in the way of the HDMI port, and because the half cage is still in front of the camera body, it would still get in the way.
      Thanks for watching 😁👍

    There's a new concept released by Silence Corner. It is called Atoll. Other gear manufacturers (including SmallRig and Ulanzi/Falcam) copied it as well. It is basically a double-ring system that let's you rotate your camera 360 degrees around the lens axis. Very smart and compact solution.

    Nice solution. I found with the A7R5 you can use the tilt screen mechanism to move the flip screen further away from the body so it can rotate freely away from a bracket. However, it’s still an extra action, so I might still go with someone similar to what you have shown.

    • @mikesphotography

    I have had the same issue in the past but have found a different way to work around it. It will not suit everyone but it works for me. I have got an L bracket from Neewer that I can put on with the upright part of the bracket in the right hand side of my camera keeping it totally away from my flip out screen. Some people might not like the fact that it adds slightly to the side you hold to shoot but I find it works well for me. I still get the ability to shoot landscape or portrait. Practical advice for irksome problem, Mike. I use your solution, per prior posts and comment replies (thanks). Worth the added weight and bulk. Cool idea for under tripod attachment. Surprised you used separate screwdriver instead of coin or built-in driver in base of cage. Clever “flippy counter” bit😊. My only question is how did you find that picnic table out in the wild? Very convenient. Any splinters? Cheers!

    • @mikesphotography
      @mikesphotography  Рік тому +1

      For the QR plate, it is a hex key so I have to use a driver for that, it would be far easier if they just had it as a flat head like the cage.

    Genius idea. Looks like Smallrig only sells the Canon half cage with a cable clamp, which raises the price a bit over the Sony version without the cable clamp. One of these days I will upgrade, but the A7iii is really a great camera. If you decide to hang on to your 'III' and want the protection, accessory options and extra grip of a cage I would include them in comparisons. Yes you have a point. Difficult when using gloves. But just back from a trip to Norway, Vesteralen. Nice place by the way. And didn't have problems but removed the gloves to change lenses. You can give a little more space if needed. Have one Atoll and 3 Sunway’s now. The Sunway’s have a longer Arca-Swiss base (for the balhead fixation). The Atoll is easier to go from horizontal position to vertical by feeling a click. This is more difficult to feel on the Sunway’s. But the change from horizontal to vertical position is a little stiff on the Sunway's you don’t even have to tight the collar.

Some time while shooting if I want to re adjust it it takes more that a second to react. I missed few shots due to that. I’m waiting for Sony to borrow me the A7RV to see if this is different

    Here is a solution that many people forget about, pair your phone to your camera, and leave the screen in place. Use L bracket. Put phone on a mount on Hot shoe -- this works very for a lot of scenes because you can see your image and even tap to control some settings.

    All this is solved with the Atoll collar. It is awesome. I removed my L bracket and now use it. It allows you to change between portrait and landscape without removing the camera from the tripod. It has clicking spots to ensure 90, 180, … degrees. It clears anything obstructing your ports or flip screen. It allows you easier connection to peak design capture clips. It is awesome. I wish I had it 10 years ago.

      Great to hear you are getting on with the Atoll collar mount.
      I did read a few comments here that the lens release button was covered up a little by it ... I also see that smallrig have copied it as well.
      Thanks for the tip 😁👍
