    Found your review a little while back & picked one up for a tenner (AliEx).
    I enjoy using it and I like the retro look of the set.
    A charge lasts for ages, the sound is good, on SW it overloads quite a bit if I attach a wire to antenna.
    For the price, no complaints.

At this price point, I don’t think you have much to lose and I have to say, mine just sits on the kitchen window sill and I just put it on for a while when I get home. It’s not the best looking radio in my opinion, but it turned into a very useable little set.

    As for your question what this 4V outlet is: For the Asian market NSS and KNSTAR sell these sorts of radios actually with an external LED in the shape of an old-fashioned bulb, attached with a wire to the 4V socket.
    Thank you for the very helpful review. Kudos for using an incandescent bulb to do the AM review. They should have given this radio a broad vertical dial, especially for SW. Buying one nonetheless as an emergency radio.

      Hi Johann, appreciate the feedback and the explanation - always learning new things with UA-cam! I agree with your suggestion with the dial. It's like they put plenty of thought into what useful features to provide, but about 5 minutes into the front design. Its a shame really as I think if they re-did the front layout, they would be on to a winner. Thanks Johann.

      @@TheWobblyCameraGuy Hello, do you know how the batteries work? Say I have 2 D cell inside how would that affect the rechargable? I mean can all batteries be inserted safely and will it work off the D cell over the rechargable? Or would the D cell recharge it?

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy
      @TheWobblyCameraGuy  2 роки тому +1

      @@ashab1 Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Its a good question and looking at the battery compartment, the 'D' cell positive terminal connection point is linked to positive terminal connection point of the 18650 cell. However, although the batteries are different lengths, I can just about see within the recessed part where the 'D' cells locate. that the 0V connection points for both battery types are also linked together, so when both battery types are fitted, they are in parallel,(3.5V & 3.7V nominal so little difference). Thus, without disassembling the radio, it looks like its possible that they could share the same charging circuit? However, there could be sufficient different internal resistances between the two battery types, that makes this a viable solution given the very low mA charge rate from the solar cell? (its possible that the small voltage difference between the battery types is sufficient to sensed and the solar cell O/P is disconnected upon sensing a slightly higher voltage by a charge control c'ct?). There are no details or warnings given within the brief instructions for the radio. Interestingly, the small led 'charge' indicator is illuminated, (with a light source on the cells) when no batteries are present so is really just sensing that the solar cells are producing a voltage rather than charging the internal battery. Interesting stuff, sorry I couldn't specifically answer your question.

      is the main reason for purchasing it, but it turned out to be a reasonable receiver for the price. However, as you quite rightly point out, it is at the budget end of the market. I have done a review on a similar multi-band radio, the BH-1520BT. It doesn't have solar but comes with a rechargeable battery, MP3, etc. with a good SW performance for the price and this too can make use of 'D' size batteries. 8 bought a radio with exactly the same functions but in a different case.
    It had a weird name like galelim.
    I think it may be the same radio inside.
    I actually like it quite a lot.
    It does very well on AM broadcast band, which is very rare for cheap radios and shortwave reception is very good. The bad part is how close the stations are together. On each band the stations are all located within about 1/4 of an inch of dial movement. Very tight tuning.
    I paid $25, and I am happy with the radio.

      Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Like you I was surprised at this little radio's performance considering its aimed at the budget end of the market and has solar power for recharging the internal battery. Yep, it has very tight tuning and would benefit from having a larger horizontal tuning scale or splitting the SW bands into more manageable groupings. On AliExpress there is a radio that shares the same case, but doesn't have solar and I think covers AM, FM & TV, (the TV band being for the Chinese market I assume). All interesting stuff 👍

    I was a child when i had a radio that looked like this. Mine arrived today. I'm looking forward to some technical advice. Which i didn't need when i was younger. I bought this for camping off the grid! Can i take the lithium out and use normal batteries? Or take the lithium out and use rechargeable batteries?

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy
      @TheWobblyCameraGuy  23 дні тому +1

      Hi, thanks for your feedback and queries. Yes, you can use normal ‘D’ type, (UM1) 1.5V batteries if you wish. However, the 18650 battery provided is rechargeable so you shouldn’t really need rechargeable 1.5V batteries unless you already have some to hand with a suitable charger? If you are going of grid then what I would suggest is purchasing a much higher capacity 18650 rechargeable battery and use this in place of the one provided, as they are never seem to be the capacity that they make them out to be. Charge it to full before your trip and hopefully, the solar panel will top it up during the day to keep you going. Let me know how you get on 👍

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy
      @TheWobblyCameraGuy  3 місяці тому

      Hi, that’s a good question. I have just tried it and it does appear to work directly off the 5V charging port with no 18650 battery fitted. I can’t put my hand on the instructions at the moment so I am not sure if this method is recommended by the manufacturers, (sometimes they have charging circuit design restrictions). However, it does come with an 18650 battery as standard, so even when that’s flat, it doesn’t take top long to put a decent amount of charge in it and you could always obtain a 2nd battery if you needed to keep the radio going for an extend amount of time.

      To be honest, its performance was pretty good considering it was covering shortwave with just one band rather than breaking them down into separate selectable bands. Separation can sometimes be a bit a challenge with this configuration. As for looks, its very subjective, it still appears a little basic to me but I'm eating my own words as it one that I use quite regularly lol

    Anybody figured out what that 4v out is? Can the radio be connected to external (active) speakers?

    • @TheWobblyCameraGuy
      @TheWobblyCameraGuy  6 місяців тому

      Hi, that’s a good question. At first, I thought that the 4Vdc O/P would really be 3.7V (i.e. the same as the 18650 battery). But no, to my surprise, it is a true 4V O/P (measuring 4.1V under no load conditions). Looking on Ali Express, these same radios are now appearing without this socket outlet, so the manufacturers must have decided that there is not much demand for it. This may indicate that whatever it is designed to power, may be an older tech device/item that is becoming obsolete? As to what is it used for, I have no idea, but if any UA-camrs can advise, we would all be very interested. This feature also appears on one or two other Isolar radios, so it is not unique to this particular receiver. With regards to driving external loud speakers, it doesn’t have an audio O/P socket so I think you are going to struggle unless you can find a schematic diagram for this and find a place to break into the audio pat of the circuit and fit a socket yourself. Having said that, it is quite loud and has a decent size loudspeaker for a budget prided radio/media player.
