Which One to Buy? Midland ER310, Raynic CR1009, or RunningSnail Emergency Radios. Solar & Crank Test
Вставка
- Опубліковано 7 лют 2025
- I compared and reviewed the RunningSnail MD-088, Raynic CR1009 Pro, and the Midland ER310 emergency radios. I also compared how well they charge with solar and hand crank. I learned something after testing the radios that surprised me. Finally, I demonstrated using the weather alert warning button during an actual severe thunderstorm.
NOTE: After the testing and posting the video, I decided to see how well they charge my cell phone. After charging up the radios to 100%, I charged my phone with them until the radios stop charging...
Raynic charged 47% of my phone until the radio battery went dead. This radio has a 5,000 mAh battery and it used all of it.
RunningSnail charged 19% of my phone, but the radio continued to work.
Midland charged only 7%. I tested it twice, and the radio continued to work.

Another very good radio is the Eton - Sidekick. The nice thing about this radio is it has the S.A.M.E. Technology which allows you to narrow down the alert area, but it is expensive, and I don't care for the tuning dials. It also tips over a little easier than my other radios. I think it lists for over $120.00, and last time I checked it was $90.00 on Amazon.

This was awesome, so much better than the reviews that just talk about the specs.
Thanks. I try to put some debth into reviews...
This video was helpful in a realistic way. Thank you for running the test like you did. The other day there was a severe enough storm to lose power for 4 hours. And when I grabbed my emergency solar lanterns, my kids had them. Nearly dead. My phone was low battery at the time too. We lost power for 3 days a few years back so I was prepped with matches and candles. Thank god!
Glad you had the candles! Thanks for the comment.
Thanks man. That was one of the best product test videos that I have seen.
Thank you. Glad I could help.
My Mudland arrived today from Amazon. I am eager to test it😊
I was recently gifted the CR1009 you used in your demo and found the information learned from your home test to be very helpful for the capabilities of my radio - thanks for taking the time to put this online and stay well.
Thanks for watching!
Always find your videos so well researched and informative, thank you!
So kind of you to say that. I do work hard and take my time with my videos. Thank you. 👍
Thanks for this informative video I am shopping around for an emergency radio. This was very helpful. You did a great job at explaining all of the different features and differences between the 3 models. Showing your tests on them was super. I enjoyed your thoroughness and attention to detail.
Thank you!
Thank you! I've spent the last two hours looking at videos and reviews, and was debating between the Raynic or the Midland or a KA600, and your video made it clear the Midland was the better choice. I made sure to use your link, too.
So glad my video helped you out.👍
Great video pal thanks , u showed all the things I wanted to see , especially the hand crank and solar
I made it with peoole like you in mind... Thanks for the comment.
Upgraded from my ancient Dynamo & solar Radio and got the Midland 310. I like the ability to power from three sources (sun, crank, & battery), large display and built-in clock. The ability to easily replace the lithium ion battery and to use alkaline batteries means more options for powering the radio. Nice to have in our mountain community that is prone to storm outages.
Don't underestimate yourself..itbis scientific...maybe not precise is the word...but is still effective..great video...I love radio and this video for informative info was very good....the only didn't like about the Midland was the plain display
You were very helpful. Best informative video I seen as of yet. I liked and subscribed. Thank you

Fellow DFW resident here. I'm in the market for an emergency radio so I appreciate the comparisons. This video was very helpful.
Glad I could help
Fantastic experiment, thank you for sharing your results. I have the running snail, the Kaito KA500 5-way Powered Emergency AM/FM/SW NOAA Weather Alert Radio with Solar,Dynamo Crank,Flashlight and Reading Lamp. I think I'll have to get the Midland thanks to your experiment.
Glad you liked it... That Kaito is a good radio.
This video has been super helpful! We just experienced hurricane Helene and thankfully we didn’t get hit too hard… currently on day 5 with no power and we were trapped on our country road for 3 days. My in laws finally got power and we’ve been camping out there charging devices, flashlights, etc. I will be getting the orange one after your review.

Great little radio.
Sir, your video was very informative and helpful. Thanks!

Thank you for your review. I'm going with the Midland! I plan to get one for the house and one for each of our vehicles.

Love it. Really nice demonstration which is much appreciated. Have been leaning towards the Midland, but I'm almost certain I will go with that one. Thanks!
Thanks, I'm going to order the Midland!
Glad I could help. Did you see my other midland emergency radio review? If not, take a look.
I'm buying a Midland ER310 based on your review. Thanks!
I think you will like it. I like mine! Did you see my review on the midland all hazard alert radio? You may want to check it out.

Good for you. Its a great little radio. Be sure to see my video on the midland all hazard radio!
That red little Running Snail is great!
Very useful video. I didn’t even know some radios have a weather warning ! I’ll have to upgrade to one of those versions

Thanks. Purchased Midland ER310 based on your review.
Glad I could help. Been using ours a lot as of late here in Texas.

This is fantastic info, great video
Thanks for side by side testing of solar, crank charging, and smartphone charging. So many "reviews" just compare features from the spec sheets without testing performance. I am surprised the Midland only charged your phone 7%. Most reviewers find their products superior to the competition. The manual says the radio will turn off when you are charging a phone. Did you run the radio while you were charging the phone? I suggest you contact Midland customer service. I have, as have others, and Midland was very responsive.
No need to call Midland. This is how it tested out, and other people have had similar experiences. The radio was off when charging.
Worth watching a lot of good comparison info great job
Thank you for your time and efforts👍🏼
Thank you for watching!
Nice to see the testing. I would still take the Raynic because of its SW ability. If an EMP happend most likely all domestic radio stations would be gone and only news from other countries may be all that's available.
I had recently purchased two of the Midland radios (smaller version) I think it was the E50. It did have the 18650 rechargeable battery so I was glad I found them on sale at Walmart (22$), but I couldn't get a decent AM signal on them inside the house even near a set of large windows. I had purchased a couple radios from a Ross clothing store a year ago and it is also rechargeable and a solar panel, but has multiple Short Wave bands and the AM reception is way better than the Midlands.....was shocked and disappointed so I returned those Midlands. I think the other radios are QFX brand. I put those both in my faraday box.
Thanks for the hand crank test data. That's what I've been looking for. Unfortunately today's "emergency" radios are battery-dependent whereas 20 years ago you could get a mainspring crank radio, cranked up much in the way you wind an old manual watch. Cranking was more efficient, but more importantly the radio would function with no battery involvement. I have a 25 yr old mainspring crank radio that still works, from a company called Freeplay (which is still in business, but which I believe now uses batteries). Apparently mainspring crank radios are no longer made. So much for risk mitigation eh?
Sounds interesting. Think I will try to find info about those radios if the info is even out there.
This is more than I knew before. I'm not surprised about Midland performance. Onward with my research.
Thanks for the review, it was nicely done!
Thank you.
Thank you sir. Very clear and informative.

Outstanding review and information, thank you.
I was so suprised after the testing...
Excellent review and testing. Thank you!
Thank you
I'll throw in my 2¢ for any of the CCrane radios, especially the CCrane Solar, or the CC Solar Observer. Awesome company and excellent radios.
Midland seems solid but if you are concerned with some SHTF scenario I’d definitely get something with shortwave.
Watching a video on the aftermath of Helene from a guy that had many radios, he said by far the most useful was a scanner… to get real info from all types of responders communicating to one another. Although without a generator or solar bank a scanner may prove useless
Scanners are great. I have a couple. I think ham radio is best for emergencies, but a scanner is nice.
@PreppingOver50 Hey i have the midland radio but the older version of that one and it works good
I bought a cheap one a while ago as was tight for money, it’s ok, but will definitely upgrade soon.
I’ll do what you have and chuck the cheaper one in my bug out bag.

The Midland, sadly, is the only one with a replaceable recharging battery, rather than a built in one that would likely be difficult to replace. For that alone, it gets my vote for stay-at-home. LIke you I have the Rainsnail (with a different name) in my go bag due to it being lightweight.
You should read the results of my testing how well they charge phones under the description. I was surprised.
Good test. Thanks for pointing that out. Yes, looks they should all go to that independent / replaceable recharge battery. @@LoneStarPrepping
This was great information and very helpful. Thanks!
You are so welcome!
I finally stumbled on to your UA-cam evaluation of three different weather, alert, radios fortunately, for me I had already bought the Midland, but all your information was so useful in reassuring me in my purchase. The only downside was that I never had heard a weather alert, radio alarm, and when it went off on three different occasions in the middle of the night, I was clueless, there was no bad weather other than temperatures below freezing. In my deep deep sleep, I thought it was my security alarm so I began troubleshooting The security alarm system to the point of buying new entry door sensors even though the alarms sound nothing alike. Watching your UA-cam video led me to another Midland video that actuated the alarm and there I could hear what a real weather radio alarm sounds like. Mystery solved, and I will finally get a good nights sleep without being interrupted by the alarm why the alarm went off, I don’t know, but going forward I will only turn it on when there are thunderstorms working out there, Thank you so much for your video. I am convinced after watching yours that I made the right purchase
Thank you for you comment, but in my video, I did show what the alarm sounds like. You might look into the
WR120 NOAA Weather Alert Radio. This has, like many similar radios, S.A.M.E. You can set it up for local alerts only and the kind of weather alert you want. That way you can leave it on all the time.
I guess I missed the alarm sound demonstration. I was still half asleep while researching. Thanks for your reply. It was very helpful.

I was going to go with the midland but after reading the description I think the cell phone Raynic might be the option I go with I could always just crank it more often
Its a great radio. I think the midland is more rugged for bugging out, camping etc...
This is Hilarious. I was watching this video and brief mild storm passed over 10 min later I was blacked out (along with over 500,000 other homes) for almost 12hrs. Strange one of the big power stations went off line at the same time and came back online at the same time power came back according to media reports totally unrelated (if you believe that). I live in Australia they are shutting down coal powered Power Stations, Gas has been banned for domestic use in new houses. In Australia we don't need to prep for an attack from a foreign country, civil unrest or a natural disaster, our socialist Greens controlled government is our biggest threat.
The current administration is trying to do the same thing here in the United States. We moved to a home with natural gas from an all electric home and glad we did! I just uploaded a video where we turned the power off for 24 hours. It was so easy to deal with with portable power station and natural gas. We were even able to run our furnace and gas tankless water heater.
Jumper, yes, you're correct.

Good video, thanks for sharing, God bless !
I have the Midland. My fiancee has gotten me two of them because the first one stopped charging. Imay look into changing the battery on it, but even with the new one we’ve had some difficulty getting it to full charge. The original one has some rattles inside it…the outer shell IS pretty hard, but it seems to have not stood up to drop too well, and I’m not so sure the crank works much at all, but I’m gld its there nonetheless in case I ever HAD to find out. I still like the unit though, and I’ll probably continue to get the same one. The newermodel however has a straight puul out antenna so you can’t adjust it like you could with the old one which is annoying because we use it to listen to radio in the mountains where its hard to get a signal. I think if Midland DID pu SOS AND shortwave on it, it would be perfect and have just about everything I could want or need. Unless they really wanted to make it perfect and put all band and a transmitter!
Nice and for the review.
The yellow radio has a cover on the bottom. Maybe it also has replaceable rechargeable batteries there
Would be very interested in a radio with the Midland's features PLUS shortwave. Suggestions?
Also, they ARE radios. Any comparison on reception? Speaker quality/clarity of signal?
Possibly compare same day reception quality on near and far away radio stations on the three radios? Battery life doesn't mean much if the radio can't adequately capture the signal and play it back without distortion and static.

Great review!!!!!
Thank you...
Great video thanks! Is it possible to turn down or turn off those weather alerts but keep the flashing lights on. Also is the short wave radio a big deal on the Midland?
I'm really not sure. That would be nice though... Maybe just turn volume down all the way? Not sure... No, I do not think SW is a big deal on the Midland.
Im presuming you could hear the weather alert over the noise of the force 9 gail, thunder and lightning outside? Tickled me did that 😂
Joking aside, how much notice do you get in US with NOAA?
And thanks again for an superb review.
Actually we had been hearing alerts for some time before the storm hit us. I just had to catch the best one for the review.

I got one but the phone changing is not working
Sorry to hear that. You didnt say which one. Send it back. There are many "likes" on all those radios on Amazon, so a lot of people are not having issues.
@lonestarprepping Thanks so much for taking the time to create this video. I may have missed it, but do you normally leave one of your radios on WX 24/7 so that it will alert you if you are otherwise not monitoring the weather any other way? Or do you rely on your cell phone to alert you and only then turn on your WX radio to get the details? I figured when I get one of these I would plug it into the wall and leave it on (Wx mode) all the time.. Is there anything wrong with that? Thanks!
Actually, we have the Midland Weather Alert Radio for monitoring 24/7. It has S.A.M.E., and we have it set for this zip code and tornado only. We are already aware of other weather events from news etc... We bring out the other Midland red radio on WX for other events near us as well, and we listen to AM on it for more weather news. I will be doing a review on that radio as well soon. I have examples of it alerting the recent tornado in Tx.
@@LoneStarPrepping Thanks so much for the fast reply! When you mention the 'Midland Weather Alert Radio', would that be something like the WR120? I see that has S.A.M.E. I appreciate you mentioning the ability for it to do zip code as well as to focus on only tornado alerts.
Yes, its that radio.
I am wondering what the differences between the Midland 310 and the Midland 210?
The 210 doesnt use AA batteries, no dog whistle, and the rechargable battery is smaller ie. 2,000 mAh instead of 2,600 mAh. The ULTRASONIC DOG WHISTLE is used to assist search and rescue teams in locating individuals during an emergency situation.
Oh, I really like the idea I’ve been able to use the AA batteries. So I guess I would need to go with the 310. Thanks so much for helping me.
No problem. I think the 310 is about $10.00 more or so...
hi and thanks for the video, do you recommend that an emergency radio has more bands then just AM/FM. cheers Glenn v from NZ
Thank you for watching. For me, AM/FM & Weather alerts are enough. Short wave is nice, but I doubt I would use it much. I have ham radios that I have used in emergencies and videos about them.
I have owned the Running snail version, not to be rude, but it sucked really really bad. I ended up buying the Craftsman version, unfortunately they quit selling them. Because of the bad luck I had with the running snail, I would probably go for the midland, because I don't recognize the third brand, to me Midland just has better quality all together. I agree folks should have one of these! Scientific or not, this test makes sense to me. 73 and God Bless.
I agree it is not the best radio out there, but for $15.00, it aint bad, especially if it just going to sit in a bug out bag. If you see my review on them, you will see what I mean. I like it for the price. It also out performs my midland 310 in charging my phone. I talk about that under the description.
Curious... how did it "suck" for you? 73
Mostly because, something was always wrong with it, either the battery wouldn't hold a charge, It wouldn't receive NOAA, too long ago to remember exactly. I bought at least four of these, before giving up on the version, they looked exactly like this one. The final one, I ended up replacing the built in rechargable, with a 18650 and a single battery BMS, but had to remove the solar panel, so that the I would have a place to mount the 18650. Never had a battery problem again! lol. After I bought the Craftsman version, I gave the other one to my Grandson who was just amazed with it.
I did watch your review, I was just pointed out my opinion on that one. Yes I know my opinion may seem a little strong on this, but I had a very bad experience with it, and would never put any trust in it again. @@LoneStarPrepping
I would not have one for regular use but my bob its just fine...
No problem with that, we each have to choose what we think is the best coarse of action. It wasn't my intention to insult you, just expressing a different point of view. Take care. @@LoneStarPrepping
Oh no insult taken! None at all! 73... Midland is the way to go between the radios I tested gor general emergency use.

I have a question. On one of your videos you show a faraday baggie that you can put stuff in before putting it in your Faraday cage. Where and what are they called?? I can't find them anywhere online. I have the exact same red one from Amazon. It has really great reception. I am planning on taking my HAM test. Another great video.
I should have this link in that video under the description. amzn.to/3s5EAsg
You can try disasterpreparer.com as well.
I have the running snail radio, bought it on 2021, just tried to use it during a powercut and it only worked while plugged into a powerbank. The power is back so I've tried charging it and it doesn't hold charge. The battery is non removable so its defunct except whilst plugged into a powerbank, which isnt ideal as I go might need the power for my phone etc.
Sorry to hear that. Mine still works great, but like I said, it isn't the best out there. As I stated in my video, I do not use mine for home emergencies. I use the Midland. It sounds like you last used it in 2021 and just tried again a few years later? You need to use it every 6 months or so. Bring the charge down and charge er back up and use it. Sounds like just sitting killed it.
What’s a good solar powered walkie talkie in case power grids shuts down
@deniselayer802 I would instead buy a small portable power station to charge the walkie talkies. If there was a solar powered one, it would take forever to charge it.
Just brought the running snail, but it doesn't charge my devices. I wrote in the review last week. But no response.
Send it back. Mine charges my phone better than the midland 320 does! What review?
have a craftsman version wish it had a earphone jack it will charge from my desk lamp
How does it work for you? I have never used one.
Pretty sure the Raynic has a single screw battery door on the very bottom that houses the 18650 rechargeable battery for replacement.
Not to mention, the ability to have access to shortwave transmissions could be vital to survival in a bugout scenario. Love the Midland minus that HUGE factor.
I've got a GREAT idea for all these Emergency radios: one of the radio bands should be TV audio so while you're sitting there powerless, at least you can listen to your favorite TV shows. EZ to design into these radios and worth every penny while you're sitting there doing nothing IMHO.
There are radios out there with tv band. They dont seem to be very popular though.
I wish some company would add S.A.M. to a portable emergency radio.
I think the Eton - Sidekick has S.A.M.E.
TYSM 🎉🎉🎉❤❤ So helpful 😃 I love these radios and I'm so 😊😁 Thank you 😻💓
So glad you enjoyed the video. Thank you for watching.
An hour playback from an 5000mah battery doesn't seem a lot
Midland ER40, 500 ?

Not really, right now. If everything went shtf, it may be helpful to get info from different parts of the world.
❤
I guess the display i 1:20 1:25 snt too bad after further review for the Midland
Great video
Thanks!
Is that an 18360 battery in the Midland?
No, it is not.
Will any of these radios work in an EMP?
Likely not... You'll need a faraday cage.
I have a couple of emergency radios. One at home and one in the Land Rover.
It charges via solar, had a hand crank and can be run off it's built in battery 2000Mah) or AAA. Had an SOS feature, torch and reading lamp , can also be used to part charge a phone.
Key with these is to use them now and again if only to cycle the batteries.
The one kept at home sits on the windowsill and stays topped up via solar for the most part. For charging from dead the solar panels are a bit of a gimmick but will add some charge over a few days.
One other note, if you see the larger 10000mah or 20000mah battery banks with single solar panels on sale don't bother.. they are total crap and will take weeks to charge them.
I think the solar on those radios are mainly for topping off the battery. Example would be leaving in window when using to keep topped off. You are right about using here and there...
@@LoneStarPrepping I am well versed in solar and batteries so know when something is a gimmick or I can at least understand its capability before buying.
My old man is based in Texas ( I am UK based) and I have sorted him out with these radios and other battery options for charging kit.
someone gave me a crank radio very much like the RunningSnail (and in fact mine was an Eton "Microlink 160"). It was terrible from day 1. The solar charger never worked. The USB connector never worked. Cranking for 3 minutes would get you almost a minute of radio play time. The switch to turn on the radio has become dirty, and it will no longer reliably turn the radio on. I will never consider purchasing a hand crank radio. They are a waste of money.
Sorry to hear you had problems, but 11,400 people, at least, rated the cheapest one a 4.5 on average. For you to conclude that because your one radio had problems, you would never buy ANY crank radio again, after seeing my tests, is a little short sided. If not a crank radio, what radio would you buy for emergencies?
@@LoneStarPrepping The August 2020 derecho in Iowa sealed the fate of a handcrank 'emergency radio' in my eyes. I was without power for 11 days. I didn't touch that crank radio. While internet over cell phone was almost non-existant, we did have sporadic cell phone service. The car radio (even in my tree damaged SUV) was still operable (even though many local radio stations were off the air or on reduced power due to damage to towers, communication lines, lack of backup power, etc. Oddly, my landline telephone was still in operation even though the neighbors to each side of me had no landline telephone. In my opinion, keeping a couple of spare (and charged) batteries around (with the ability to recharge a cell phone or jumpstart a car) is a good idea. A hand crank will only generate a tiny amount of power (and I wonder how long those solar panels will take to recharge a standard 5000mAh cell phone battery? How many cranks of that generator?). In the aftermath of that storm, there were enough resources available to keep the batteries topped off. Finding an open gas station selling fuel was more of a challenge (often involving a 30 minute drive to wait in a line nearly 90 minutes. Every car had not only the car's fuel tank, but also at least one or two extra fuel containers for generators and chainsaws, as a hand crank generator will not supply enough power.). And as for the NWS broadcasts, I often find them to be too late. The bad stuff has already gone down by the time the NWS puts out a warning. Look at a good radar through a mobile app, THAT will help you more. Yup, that storm changed my perspective.
Im not trying to talk you into a crank radio, even though it is a good idea. You do what you think is best, and after an emp hits, I will take my crank radio out of my faraday cage and be able to use it whereas you will have nothing. Good luck with that.
😊
