Almost 40 years ago, I attended a Vivaldi special event in a Westchester, New York. This two mandolin piece was played. The audience was so happy and joyful that peals of laughter erupted. The mandolin players beamed and grinned more and more. That moment lives in my heart.
Yes, Daddy Frank played the guitar and the French harp, sister played the ringing tambourine, mama couldn’t hear the pretty music, she read our lips and helped the family sing! It wasn’t like no normal family combo, because daddy Frank the Guitar Man was blind!
Right. Before I listen to this performance for the umpteenth time; I want to put it on record. This is, ABSOLUTELY, the best performance I have heard of it - no question(!) The mandolin playing, specifically in the 2nd movement, is; & has to be; pin sharp - like birds singing. All other performances I've heard it's dull & lifeless. And the 'band' is usually too numerous - this is a chamber piece for crying out loud!
I was also a soloist in Vivaldi's concerto in C major for 1 mandolin and orchestra. Is there a video of you where you are running it? If so, what is the website?
The two mandolins was beautifully played by these two young women. Actually the whole group played wonderfully. Thanks for unloaded it. It was a joy listened to.
Vivaldi wrote the mandolin concerti specifically for women to play: therein lurks an inspiring lesson from history. I'd like to think that this orchestra knew that history and for that reason chose women to play the mandolins. [EDIT] I see that some other persons commenting here, have explained in some detail that history.
Music for the Gods. Elena & Ekaterina, play the Mandolin perfectly, as for the Gods. I loved. Caress for the Soul. Blessings to the entire string ensemble.
They looked like a bit of a shambles at the start, but when they started playing - WOW! This is one of my favourite pieces and I don't think I've heard it better.
I want you to think back to the premiere of this concerto, and most concertos by Vivaldi: being played high on a balcony behind a veil by mysterious, ethereal girls who were acknowledged to be some of the best musicians in Europe. They had no family or life outside their convent, where they practiced music all day long, becoming virtuosic on several instruments. All of them could play string instruments; alongside some specialists on organ, oboe, and so on. Vivaldi was their teacher and source of strength. He spent much of his own salary procuring some of the finest instruments in Europe for them to play, occasionally built especially to accommodate a deformity or disability - for quite a few of these girls had been given up to the orphanage for that reason. And yet safely behind their veil on their balcony, they performed for thousands of music lovers every year, and great musicians often traveled for hundreds of miles to hear them play and learn from their example.
Hi Dear, Sure, what you say happened in the venetian region. The rich families had a serious heritage problem: by splitting the patrimony the family was loosing on power. For this reason only the major son was entitled to inherit. The others had to become army officers or better priests. The daughters had leave for the same reason and leave in convents. Of course they didn't have a religious vacation and belonged to very rich families, so there were in special convents winch provided a high secular education and and generally interesting life. The musical education was one of the principal points. Such convents were called conservatories. The same Vivaldi came from a poor family, no money for education. I think this situation is today very well known in the USA. On that time in the venetian area there was no army corresponding money for education for people accepting the affiliation. Instead they had the catholic church, so Vivaldi had to become priest, Hi was called the red priest, his hairs were orange like today the Trump's face. ). Hi conducted a convent sisters orchestra, they used to perform on the main squares in the venetian cities, and I would pay something to assist to a such concert on a summer evening. Hi had also a second orchestra, they were clausure sisters and hi conduct them trough an iron grid. Anyway, all that is irrelevant, the point is that Vivaldi was a genius. His music is today performed so often as the music by Bach.
Uh, I have forgotten..Vivaldi composed such concerts for "leuto" what means "lute" in english. However, the lute used in Venice on that time was 50% shorter, the double string were metallic and played with the help of a plectron. We call a such music instrument "mandolin". I am just telling that that concerts for guitar are transcription, being the originan version still for mandolin.
Bravissime!!!!!!
Beautiful recall of a vinyl my mother sent to me when I was studying in México. The players were "I Solisti di Zagreb". These ensamble with these two women made a pretty performance. Excellent!!
The Ospedale de Piéta, where Vivaldi was overseeing the music, was the first magnet school. If other orphanages found they had a girl with talent, she would be sent there. Twice a year the orphanage would have a public concert where the young ladies would play in Orchestra and soloists behind a grill or a scrim and the public would be invited to these concerts and single men of standing could select their future wives from these girls and when the girl was old enough to leave the orphanage she would marry into these families and no one would ever hear her music talents again except her family. I agree with the comment that said the shooting of this video was not optimal because you can't see the technique of the soloists. However, if we use our ears, we will discover the entire performance is one of the most tasteful and glitteringly beautiful Vivaldi Concerto performances any of us have ever heard
