Just made this for my mom. And even though we dont live in Poland for over 40 years she still cooks Polish dishes only. And I have been trying to catch up. And she approved 100%. As did my brother. Thank you
I'm new to your channel. Thank you so much for for these videos. My Great Grandparents were from Warsaw. They passed away before I was born. My grandfather was Polish. So, very few foods were passed down and the language barley spoke because of my great grandmother. I'm the only one who took interest In the foods and now the only one who can cook the food. So, I'm learning from you. So I can pass these foods down in the family and our heritage is never lost. Learning from you I fill like I'm honoring my heritage. Having a book is great but im old school. Seeing it perpaired much better. Its like when i make my polish soup. You have to see to fully understand and appreciate. Thank you so much for these post....
Hi Anna, I love your tutorials. My Polish relatives made similar version of this. Instead of dill a little sugar was added to make it sweet- sour. Some used equal parts sugar and vinegar, others made it more sour. We always had this with holiday meals and frequently in between them.
It took me almost 15 minutes to realize that my mom used to make this dish. It took that long because while you give the cabbage a fine dice, mom's idea was a rough chop. Also, she didn't use any spices, but like you finished with bacon, onions, and roux. I'll try my hand at it!
My dad's side is Polish but I didnt grow up with them, so I love your channel so that I can learn how to make the dishes he grew up with. He has been telling me how good kapusta is, so I am going to bring this dish for Christmas!!! Thank you!!!
I am so happy that I found PYK!! I feel like I’m connecting to my family members that have gone home, listening to you talking about the food and culture of Poland. Thank you for everything you do and I feel like you and Mark are friends!! If you’re enter on Long Island NY USA let me know !! Would love to meet you all!! God bless and keep you all in His Care! Djènkuje bardzo!
Cabbage and bacon = marriage made in heaven. The nutrients from cabbage help digest the fat from bacon with (some people say) no side effects. The same goes for cabbage and pork knuckle. Both are delicious.
Same finally the internet has use to let me learn things i havemt been taught because fast food easy meals seemed the only option to my hard working dad my mom is not polish But her and my grandma would show me to cook
Hahaha she just said "screw the kids. They can't appreciate it anyways." Ain't that the truth?! Kids these days. Guess it's us parents fault though. Don't know how I cam across your vids, I'm not even Polish, but I'm glad I did. Love your humor.
I just found your program. I love watching you polish recipes. would have been nice to have a CLOSE UP of what the Cabbage looked like when it was finished. It was hard to get a good look of the cabbage and ingredients on the small plate from a distance. Glad I found the program and I'm sharing it with others.
I’m so glad I found your channel and can’t wait to try all your recipes. I grew up with a lot of them, but have never attempted many I’ve seen in your list. You make it look so easy, so hoping it goes that way for me. 😊
I like you guys - You seem pretty REAL!!! My mom (sicilian/arab) learned and made most of these dishes from my polish/czechoslovakian paternal grandmother. So good to see you - passing onto my family. GBU
Love your videos! Thank you. My Polish American mother would make a huge pan of this for parties, usually mixing it half and half with cooked buttered wide noodles, to which were generously added garlic and more cracked pepper. Not sure what it was called other than Cabbage and Noodles. Would love some desserts, if you would please make czarlotka and makowiec? Dziękuję bardzo, drogi szefie kuchni!
Now I know what to to with the half of head of cabbage I have after making coleslaw yesterday! Normally I'd use it along side corned beef, but it's late spring and too hot for that dish. Thank you!
Excellent recipe! I am going to attempt making this soon! My wife is of a Ukrainian background and we make all kind of Polish food. Thank you. Subscribed!! Chef John El Hanafi
I come, originally, from an area of the midwest that had many ethnic Polish & Hungarians Although my paternal grandmother was first generation American, she never cooked Polish dishes. Enter my best friend whose family was Hungarian & his mom cooked any & all things Hungarian & Polish. What I learned to cook from her, among other things, is fried cabbage & noodles. To this day it is a fall staple at my house when the cabbage crop is ready. I still make my own fresh (not smoked) Polish sausage because I can't buy it locally.
I'm in a wheelchair, so I have to wait for someone to get the ingredients, but you can be sure, I will be making it soon. I like to make red cabbage with leaks and beets for Wigilia. Can you please share your recipe? Thanks in advance. God bless you and your family. And Merry Christmas 🎅 🎄 ❤️.
Watching this video has my mouth watering and wanting to come to your house 😋 Thank you so very much for making these videos reminds me of my Baci and Mom
I want to mention a funny language thing that had to do with that core of the cabbage. My family are Russian speaking Ukrainians and in Russian they call that cabbage center “Katchaan” (Качáн). Could be some Turkic word. The word is absolutely different from the Polish word for it, but actually it is also used to refer to some people as knuckle-head, dummy, noggin’ etc. meaning some stubborn or dumb person’s forehead or top of the head.
Wow just made this today.. fantastic!! Thank you for recipe and love your channel. My Busha made this years ago and I have not had it in like 20 yrs! Thanks again ❤️👍
Anna, I love the commentary while you made this dish...I have dreamt of kapusta zasmazana since an elderly Polish woman made it for lunch at a Legal Aid Clinic...I was drawn to the smell of it cooking and could not leave until I tried it.
i like how you leave the peppercorns in the dish. I do the same with szechuan peppercorns and it makes for a nice surprise :) Cheers from Austin, Texas.
Thank you! Is there an easy way to help mitigate the odor from the cabbage while cooking? I live in an apartment building, and I don't want to offend my neighbors (even though I don't really like them).
HI Chris, it is surely still a thing, though you don't see it very much anymore. I don't think I've seen it in a restaurant in forever. I make it from time to time, but I"m the only one in the house that cares for it. Thanks for watching!
Sooooooo sooo funny made cabbage rolls with my Polish Mother to surprise her. In oven we both just laughed at each other we forgot the rice. Oh well guess gluten free My grandma would be rolling over in grave
Wish we were friends! You make all my old favorites that my late Mom used to make. Miss her and her cooking so much. Na zdrowie ❤

Why would anyone get mad. You are so hysterical. I love the way you talk bluntly. 😅
I made creamed cabbage with bacon this Christmas and my wife called it "young bigos", I'm pretty sure this is what she meant 😁

We grew up calling cabbage and noodles "Halushki". It's a Pittsburgh Pennsylvania staple. Found in all of the supermarket delis.
I made this last week and it is delicious. Much thanks.
My pleasure 😊
Looks amazing I will try this. Thanks
I love that silver bowl!

I'm a simple man, I see the chef drinking beer on camera while cooking, I click SUBSCRIBE !
Thank you for a idea 👍👍yummy
If you put the spices into a cheesecloth and then add them to the dish, they are very easy to fish out.
Anna, I love the commentary while you made this dish...I have dreamt of kapusta zasmazana since an elderly Polish woman made it for lunch at a Legal Aid Clinic...I was drawn to the smell of it cooking and could not leave until I tried it.
You’re hilarious in this video! Thanks for the laughs.
nice sense of humor
My Czech Grandma used sliced sausage and beer ,no dill I was waiting for you to pour yours in with the cabbage.
i like how you leave the peppercorns in the dish. I do the same with szechuan peppercorns and it makes for a nice surprise :) Cheers from Austin, Texas.
Nice show Central Wisconsin USA Northern Part Thanks Dave
My mom made something similar but she would add some tomato sauce. Have you heard of that?
Look for recipe for “bigos”, I think that’s it.
Im half Polish from Hamtramck, MI. I made it for the family tonight as a side for steak. They loved it. Next stop, pierogi
That is a good pairing! Thanks for watching!
You’re Polish hamburgers and boiled potatoes,
I’m ready! ❤️
This is so good…amazing!!! Thank you!!!!
Glad you like it!
Happy I found your channel. Subscribed
Awesome! Thank you!
I'm sure my dad used to use caraway seeds at the start instead of dill, but he died when I was very young
My golden retriever dog loves the knuckle head lol
I want to make that, but I'll need to make two versions: my wife really doesn't like dill! (Or pickles!)
I hope she tries it with dill, it really makes this dish.
I just found your channel. This looks so good
Thanks and welcome
yes, we kids argued who would get the cabbage "heart". that's what we called it in my part of the world :)
UWIELBIAM KAPUSTĘ ALE TAKĄ OD BABCI🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Od babci zawsze najlepsza!! 🥰
Thank you ever so much for this, Where are the mushrooms.
Different dish. Kapusta z grzybami recipe is here: www.polishyourkitchen.com/cabbage-with-mushrooms-kapusta-z-grzybami/
Isn't that a creamed cabbage or a cooked cabbage? It doesn't really appear to be a fried cabbage dish either way it looks delish yummm
Lol I remember my Polish Grandma saying he same thing about the core as you said.
Thank you! Is there an easy way to help mitigate the odor from the cabbage while cooking? I live in an apartment building, and I don't want to offend my neighbors (even though I don't really like them).
Steve, if there is a way, I haven't found it ;) Maybe open a window? I don't know, but thanks for watching anyway!
@@PolishYourKitchen Dzięki!
Do you ever make this dish with mushrooms?
Similar... it's called "kapusta z grzybami", I have a recipe on my page polishyourkitchen.com
OMG, I never seen bay leaves so huge.

WOWOWWW! I can't wait to try this one! AND you just got another subscriber! Screw the kids!!! LOL!
I love you Maggie!!😊

I forgot to ask about the bread on the heater .
On tomorrow's brunch menu with pork ribs. Whooo hooo.
Man you are so cool
Is Czarnina still a thing?
HI Chris, it is surely still a thing, though you don't see it very much anymore. I don't think I've seen it in a restaurant in forever. I make it from time to time, but I"m the only one in the house that cares for it. Thanks for watching!
@@PolishYourKitchen it’s an acquired taste. One I haven’t acquired yet. Thanks for the info. Your Bigos recipe is fire btw.
I would use beef broth instead of water
can this dish be made meat-free?
Yes, skip bacon, just brown the onions a bit more to mimic the look od bacon bits and bring a bit of smoky (burnt) flavor.
Never mind😄👍
Sooooooo sooo funny made cabbage rolls with my Polish Mother to surprise her. In oven we both just laughed at each other we forgot the rice. Oh well guess gluten free My grandma would be rolling over in grave
Rice is gluten-free.
Your fantastic and I love your tattoos 😍❤lolz
Dee-licious. Made it with 1/2 head cabbage (only 2 of us) and thought "that's an awful lot of it". Wish I'd used the whole head.
Right!? This stuff is great!! :)
