One of the greatest comedies ever made. A sharp satire of American life in the '80s, when people were becoming disillusioned all over again after the '70s.
I'm obsessed with this movie. I remembered first renting it randomly from the video rental store based on the cover alone and then since then every time they would show it on TV I made sure to watch it
I think a random video rental based on the cover is how I found it, too. It's now one of my favorite Tom Hanks movies just because it's so unusual compared to everything else he's done.
I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but there was a reason why Ray was so uptight. He wasn't really on vacation, he was fired from his job and didn't tell anyone, not even his wife. It was either in a deleted scene or cut from the script.
I'm so glad you guys reacted to this movie. It's such a great film. There's something about its suburban-slice-of-life-horror that makes it so much fun to watch.
Such a great movie! Glad to see someone reacting to this! Myfavorite moment in this is when Tom Hanks picks up the gurney and jumps into the ambulance himself. If memory serves me correctly, he improvised that. Great fun movie.
There was a lot of improvision on the set, in no small part because it was filmed during a writer's strike. Like the moment where Bruce Dern accidentally peels off the wallpaper at the Klopecks' house and then tries to put it back was a genuine accident from Dern, but Joe Dante thought it was hilarious, so he kept it in.
OMFG I just noticed and then realized something! @ 12:55 when they’re in Walter’s house, you can see some framed photos in the shot. One is of Walter but another is Lucille Ball! That’s when I realized that Walter is played by Gale Gordon who had some guest starring roles on I Love Lucy and then later costarred with her on The Lucy Show AND Here’s Lucy!! So her picture there was just a fun reference placed by the set decorators!!

Oh my GOD this is one of my favourite films! So excited to see you both react to it, my mum introduced it to me when I was a teenager and I've been deeply in love with it ever since.
Gods, I've been waiting soooo long for this reaction! The 'Burbs is an underappreciated gem, and so rarely makes it onto many reactors radars (as with Midnight Run, hint hint). To my mind, the finest and funniest performance is by Bruce Dern - great actor, and Rumsfield gets the funniest lines!
Yay! One of my favorite Tom Hanks films, and NOBODY is reacting to it, until now. Walter was played by Gale Gordon, Lucille Ball's second husband and longtime co-star - did you see Lucy's photo on the table in Walter's house? So many little tidbits like that - good to have this in your personal library. Rick Ducommun was a Canadian actor/comedian you might remember as a barfly in Groundhog Day. Great reaction!
Lucy and Gale Gordon were never married, but they worked together continuously from the 1940s (on radio) all the way into the 1980s. His face was recognizable to anyone who owned a TV during that time, lol. I never knew Rick Ducommun was Canadian, he always used to visit the morning radio show that I listened to in Los Angeles in the late 80s/early 90s.
Check out Tom Hanks in Bachelor Party and Splash (1984) and Nothing in Common (1986) with the great comedian/actor Jackie Gleason. Jack Gleason & Art Carney starred in and produced the classic 1950's tv show The Honey Mooners.
You say that's good acting by the dog, well here's some interesting trivia. The same dog was in Pee Wee's Big Adventure, Batman Returns, Coming To America & most famously was Buffalo Bill's dog in Silence Of The Lambs. That dog is a veteran of the big screen. 😂😂
Back in his early days in the 80s when I was growing up, Tom Hanks was doing mainly comedic stuff. He did "Philadelphia" in the early 90s and I think that was the first fully dramatic role I saw him do.
So happy this won the poll and I got to see you watch this, one of my favourite movies from the 80's. I also love Art, might be the funniest character of the film for me but everyone is great in it and you can quote it for days, I'm sure you'll watch this again several times in future, it's too much fun not to. This is about the 7th appearance of Rick Ducommun on the channel, so you've seen him before for sure. "A thermostat on a home furnace; is that supposed to go to 5,000 degrees, you think?" 😂
Art is played by comedian Rick Ducunum. His movie credits include "dude in the man hole in "Die Hard" telling headquarters to shut the power down". Also "drunk guy in Groundhog's Day who was riding around with Bill Murray" He has some pretty funny stand up.
The part where Hanks and his buddy first walk up the the house has the original music from My Name Is Nobody by Ennio Morricone. It was a tribute to Sergio Leone with the close-ups of the neighbors' (and dog's) eyes.
Fun facts: Everything Carole predicted happened in the film. (Falling off roof, setting himself on fire...) This was filmed entirely on the Universal Backlot on the residential street where Desperate Housewives would later be filmed. Ricky's house is the original Munster house from the 1960's TV series. It had to have vegetation set decoration in front and only be shot from certain angles to make sure audiences did not recognize it. Gale Gordon (Walter) is perhaps best known for his role as Lucy's foil in the Lucy Show (1962-68). A photo of Lucille Ball and Gale Gordon (taken during the production of that sitcom) is one of the photos on top of Walter's TV.
In California v. Greenwood, the Supreme Court ended up ruling in favor of investigators and held that “the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit the warrantless search and seizure of garbage left for collection outside the curtilage of a home.” The case involved the protections extended by the 4th Amendment and the limits of the exclusionary rule. Here’s why that’s important. The state of California argued that the trash at the curb is outside the “curtilage,” or area of reasonable control, of the homeowner. It is not within the protection of the 4th Amendment, for any passerby could have access to it.
Let's see. . . .Joe Dante also directed "Gremlins". You may remember Dr. Klopek as the head nazi in "The Blues Brothers", Art, the late, great, Rick Ducommun, was a drunk in "Groundhog Day", and Bruce Dern's career . . .is just amazing. Joe Dante is known for often employing friends of his. Dern, Dick Miller (a garbage man, also Mr. Futterman in "Gremlins"), Robert Picardo (the other garbage man, also in "Matinee", "Gremlins 2", etc.). The bald cop is Rance Howard, father of Ron Howard. And so on. This film is one of what I consider to be the Holy Trinity of Tom Hanks films. Forget "Philadelphia" and downers like that. The Holy trinity is "The Burbs", "Joe Versus the Volcano" and "The Money Pit". I would also give consideration to "Splash" as an alternate. All underrated - especially "Joe versus the Volcano" and "The Money Pit". Great films.
The "doctor" was Henry Gibson: if you saw "The Blues Brothers", he played one of the Neo Nazis. I'm very happy that you mention Bruce Dern, one of my lifelong favorite actors. He's done everything - starring roles, bit parts, drama, comedy, and he nails it every time. A VERY underrated actor, whose films you should check out. I won't suggest any - there's too many to choose from, but I first saw him in either "Silent Running", "Support Your Local Sheriff", or "The Wild Angels", when I was a kid. He's actually been in 3 Tarantino films, playing small parts: "Hateful Eight", "Django Unchained", and "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood", and is still very busy.
I wouldn't say Dern's underrated because he's earned two Oscar nominations for "Coming Home" (Best Supporting Actor) and "Nebraska" (Best Lead Actor). I like him too in stuff like "Smile", "The Driver", "Last Man Standing", "The Astronaut Farmer", "Black Sunday", and "The Incredible Two-Headed Transplant". Even bit parts like "Marnie" and "Hush, Hush, Sweet Charlotte". Speaking of "Nebraska", Rance Howard (father of Ron Howard, who produced this film), who plays one of the detectives here, played one of Dern's brothers in that film.
In my opinion, Joe Dante is a true author. You can immediately recognize his huge personality as a filmaker by whatching any of his works. He's always had a great love for horror and sci-fi B movies of the 50's (the legendary Roger Corman was his mentor). All his filmography is full of references to those films and he's always paying tribute and homage to them. I truly recomend you any other of his gems: Piranha, The Howling, Innerspace, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Explorers, Matinee... (you've already watched "Gremlins"). By the way: you didn't say much about the amazing soundtrack by legendary Jerry Goldsmith, who composed the music for all Dante's movies since Twilight Zone: The Movie (1983) untill his death.
30:00, there was an alternative ending that was filmed but not yet released as the Klopeks did kill the original neighbors, Ray ends up getting murdered by the doctor with rat poison, the Klopeks claim their innocence for the crimes, and completely get away with it.

10:05 The unknown malfunctioning equipment in the basement sounds like the Millennium Falcon hyperdrive crapping out.
They also used it in Dial of Destiny when the engines of the german plane fail
the music is great when Tom Hanks and the big guy walk up to the door LOL
25:40 "was it better when it was a credit card?"
Detective Sam Schmitt knows the law.
Oh my GOD this is one of my favourite films! So excited to see you both react to it, my mum introduced it to me when I was a teenager and I've been deeply in love with it ever since.
The zoom ins when they find the bone lmao.
We’ve done Midnight Run!

As a kid, I got to watch The burbs’ and Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure February 17, 1989, the night they came out. It was a great night.
Fun fact: There are 8 The 'Burbs reaction videos on UA-cam. Two of them were posted on October 7, 2023.
Oh my goodness. The world needs this positive energy and humor right now. Thank you so much! This is a true classic. Blessings! ❤
An old gf told me she walked out of this movie, in the theater, bc she hated it.
It was in that moment that I knew we were doomed.😂
Former Universal Tour Guide here...
I *always* mentioned "the 'burbs" when going through there. 😁
Why'd you quit? Sounds like a phenomenal job
yass love this movie!
(Falling off roof, setting himself on fire...)
This was filmed entirely on the Universal Backlot on the residential street where Desperate Housewives would later be filmed.
Funny you mention that dog ending up in the basement, as that was the same dog that was Precious in Silence of the Lambs.
In California v. Greenwood, the Supreme Court ended up ruling in favor of investigators and held that “the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit the warrantless search and seizure of garbage left for collection outside the curtilage of a home.”
The case involved the protections extended by the 4th Amendment and the limits of the exclusionary rule.
Just what I needed, Stay hip duders. Bruce Dern is awesome as Rumsfield, He was in the war wagon with John Wayne.
Dern is also brilliant in, "Silent Running".
One of the most underrated movies of all time.
21:10, he was the Nazi Leader in The Blues Brothers.
I hate Illinois Nazis, but I love Henry Gibson.
Makes me want to watch The Money Pit again, with Hanks and Shelley Long.
This was an all time favorite we had on VHS and would often times play it, thank you for giving one of my childhood gems the respect of watching and enjoying 😎🤘
ONE OF MY FAVOURITE MOVIES. Its sooooo underrated and unknown for how good it is
I stumbled across this movie in the early 90s and I was glad I did since I probably watched this 10 times already. Another old comedy with lots of star power that most haven't heard of is called "Nothing But Trouble".
When Tom Hanks picks up the stretcher and puts it in the ambulance is one of the most hilarious scenes ever to me.
Even funnier that he improvised that bit.
