- 17 holes to play and seven down, Gary Player comes back from the dead to over hall the sadly missed Tony Lema who had won the Open in 1964 at St Andrews.

Always considered this match one of the greatest golf matches, if not THE greatest, of all time. US Open Champion vs British Open Champion. Golf lost Tony Lema too soon. A great talent.
Well said there buddy even if you don't know much about this man you only need to watch certain video clips on here from the legends of old etc and most of them when asked who was your top 5 golfers who you have personally played with who you rank amongst the best golfers of all time and I've heard quite a few say state that in his prime he really was up there say with the very best of the best .......taken far to early bless him. ..we can only imagine or think on what he may of achieved. ....... Gary Player talks so highly of this man as others giants in the game do also. ...without looking it up do you know roughly what age he was when he had that fatal plane crash .....
Beautiful video of Lema. His plane crash occurred just a couple of miles down the road from my childhood home.
Back in those days they were hitting 3 irons and 4 woods into par 4s. Now they hit PW into par 4s. It’s clear to me who the better ball strikers are. Distance is killing the game
These players were far superior to what is going on today.

@@gregoryvanikiotis3214 Will Make near Zero difference. USGA is admitting they made a mistake and failed the game. I lost a lot of respect for the USGA 30 years ago. Now it's about zero.

Heard this from someone who was "there" Lema put one OB on17 as he was about to hit his 3off tee Player asks "what ball are you playing" Lema replys "if this goes OB you can have the F*******g hole Gary" Never recovered. now going to watch video to see if true
It is/was not suprising that 'Gary Player' won. He was once quoted to say: "Golf is like an exam paper, one does not question it, one does it." 'Tony Lema,' was later to have died in a plane crash.

I notice on the 20th there was a leaf giving Player a perfect line for his putt. I wonder how that got there ? Gary wasn't being naughty was he ? How unlike him.....
