Раны на дереве, дупла и мох можно замазать старинным русским способом: 1 часть золы залить водой, пол ведра, и дать настояться 1 час, чтобы получилась щелочь. Потом добавить глину и размешать до состояния жидкой сметаны или теста для оладьев. Глина у всех разной жирности, поэтому сложно сказать сколько нужно. Сначала 1 лопату и размешать. А потом добавлять по-немногу до нужного состояния. Ещё час или больше дать постоять и можно мазать ствол и ветки рукой в перчатке. Или заложить в дупло с муравьями и они все умрут, остальные уйдут искать другое место. А ваше дерево будет жить долго. И мох погибнет под толстым слоем глины. И от морозобоя молодые деревца защитит.
Классный способ, я обычно добавляю в глину медный купорос

Great video! I was hoping to get a little advice about doing something like this on a wild cherry that looks to be 60 years old I'm guessing. The tree has grown to about 45 feet tall. The main branches are 80-200 centimeters in circumference and are about 2-4 meters from the ground. And advice you have about getting this go a manageable tree would be greatly appreciated!
You have a very difficult task ahead of you. Any such pruning carries the risk of the tree drying out. If you have decided on this procedure, make sure that it is before the movement of vegetation and protect the cuts well with wax. Try to make cuts at the height from which you want new branches to sprout and hope for the best.
@@CherryFarmEurope I just ordered up some wax. I was thinking of taking it to around 5 meters but wanted to do it slowly over the next 3 to 5 years. It's currently in full flower. Is there anything I should do help the process till the timing is right to do some heavy cutting? I've read that you can do about a third of the tree when cutting, do you think I should do less given the size to stay on the side of caution?
@@nrjensen1982 So you can cut one part every year before the vegetation. So in a few years, completely renew the tree.

I recently bought a house with an old cherry tree that has not been pruned and produces very few cherries, and those very high up. The main branches also start very high on the trunk, at 1,8 meters.I would like to cut the trunk at about half a meter and start without any branches. Is that wise or do I need to leave the hight to cut the main branches short as you did in the first video?
In the video it looks like you had cut the branches before you shorten the main branches to stubs. Should I cut some of the hight first and then do the big reduction another year?

Actually, all this pruning was done in the same year, I only cut the tops in winter and the rest in spring. This is always a risky venture, but if you want to shorten to a certain height, do it right away because the branches will not come out at the height you want, but will come out at the highest point.

You can do it on summer if you have vigorous rootstock.

In this video all regrows is in one year. So you can do pruning correction in summer if you have a vigorous rootstock.

Thank you. If you use wax to protect the cuts and spraying with copper fungicide (Nordox 750WG) should not be a problem.

Can this be done in two stages? Like to cut half of the old big branches one year and start KGB formation on them, and to cut the other half the next year, so can get some fruit without interruption? I have two twenty years old cherries. I think they cross polinate each other. Thanks
Unfortunately it is not possible, then new branches will not progress and you will not have balance.
When in winter is the best time to prune it back like that? December? Or February? No rain or frosty weather i suppose? Or can I cut my cherry tree back already tomorrow?

I made higher cuts in the beginning of the winter, you can do it also but not needed you can do it all in the early spring before vegetation starts buds will appear.

Отлично получилось! Мне очень нравится kgb, в свой сад греческий купила посадила 2 черешни, очень жалко, что поздно узнала, что сорту Кордия эта формировка не подойдет. А как реагируют старые вишни на такую обрезку. Получится из неё KGB?
С небольшими доработками не беда, на кордии тоже можно работать, просто оставьте 5 см на лидерах от боковых ветвей и будут аисты.

Thank you for the treasure of information in these videos! I have two 40+ year old cherries that are immensely overgrown. Their trunks alone, before any branching, are taller than a person. I want to severely cut them back to 'start over'. I know this may kill them but we don't get any of the fruit anyway because it is beyond even our ladders. What advice do you have for best possible success? Thank you so much in advance!
It's risky, but if you decide, try it before the beginning of the growing season and protect the tree well in the places where it was pruned.

Try air layering soe suitable growth to preserve the variety. Read up on the technique and try it out on other plants before doing it on the cherry.

That tree is 30 years old? I wouldn't have guessed. I have 4 old sweet cherry trees on my property planted in the 1960's or 1970's whose trunks are nearly three times the diameter of that tree. All four are in decline, and I'm not sure they would survive such drastic cutback as the bark is so thick and seemingly without buds that can grow.
Depending on the quality of the soil and the space where the tree is planted, a lot depends on how it will develop. It may seem like the tree is younger but it was in an orchard so it couldn’t grow like someone in a backyard that didn’t have growth control. This cherry is grown for its fruit not for its shade. Be brave, this method is risky, but there is a great chance that it will succeed.

It depends on what you want to achieve, quality or quantity, with the KGB system the emphasis is on quality, i.e. the caliber of the fruit and easy harvesting, while with the old system you will certainly achieve a larger quantity but lower quality and a slower and more difficult harvest.

We had a 100 yr old apple tree but they said it couldn't be saved.
But not think it could have been cut back and they just didn't want to deal with it or didn't know what to do.
It is certainly a risky operation, but there is a chance for success if it is done in the right way and at the right time.

I submit that he could have included cherry orchards as well. CREDIT to the orchardists: They have found ways to produce fruit and harvest it. If they actually understood tree biology better they could get more productive years from the trees with less pruning.
If I prune a tree back. I let the wounds dry for one day and soak the wood in old motoroil. Works great to keep bacteria and fungi out.

The vertical fruiting units are renewed regularly to keep spurs young and productive.
Это не KGB. KGB формируется в 16 вертикальных ветвей. А получают их начиная от 4 ветвей, отходящих от центрального ствола на уровне штамба. Эти 4 обрезают в одной плоскости длиной примерно 15 см. Из каждой этой ветки вырастают побеги, из которых выбирают 8 вертикальных побегов (по 2 из 4-х). Теперь эти 8 веток обрезают на 15 см и через год получают 16 веток, из которых и формируют дерево, каждый год укорачивая их на 50 см. Помимо этого, каждый год обрезают(!) 4 самые толстые из 16, оставляя небольшой пенёк для нового побега.

On a cherry tree you get fruit from the 1 year branchs, and you left almost none. With this kind of pruning you will collect fruit at almost 2 meters height.

глупость как-то. было большое дерево неудобно собирать плоды ( наверно) . садовод обрезал... выросли волчки нормальные волчки которые можно было отогнуть в разные стороны и получать урожай на низких веточках. нет, садовод взял обрезал все боковые плодовые веточки и опять дерево уйдет расти вверх и опять лестница при уборке будет необходима. в чем смысл? а почему раны огромные как-то замазал, а какие-то оставил прямо без замазки и покраски? у Вас, что монилиоза нет?
