9:30 But oh, that fiddle pick-up into his solo... What makes it glorious is how the whole band stops, and for those three exquisite seconds, there's nothing but fiddle. Sometimes, silence is the only correct backdrop.
Kyle Nix may honestly be one of the best fiddlers of all time! He's so so stupidly smooth and very ridiculous at was he does! 1st time I heard him, reminded me of the 1st time I heard Billy Strings, which was here by the way!!!
@@Guitargate Nice video. It might be fun to review some Steven Segal guitar playing. There are a couple of live clips on youtube but they are short and not as good as his albums. I'm checking out this album also on youtube of his called "Mojo Priest" . A lot of good songs. His singing is also good, a little like Bob Dylan, not quite as mannered and has a good blues feel. Apparently he was playing before acting (a lot better than)
FINALLY some Turnpike. I've been waiting for you to discover this band for a long time. They're ABSOLUTELY KILLER. Love this song, but not even close to my favorite. Keep digging into them, you'll become a fan in no time
The BAND kills it... Evan felker is the best country song writer of this generation. His stage presence is often horrible. Doesn't mean I wouldn't spend a week's wages to fly me from New England and my woman from small town Mexico to see them in Texas or wherever!
Had the pleasure of seeing these guys a few times live. Absolutely killer lineup! One of the few bands I listen to every song off every album. Evan Felker is one of the best storytellers in music. Hands down.
Turnpike carries over stories between songs sometimes as well. The character "Lorrie" is mentioned in multiple songs, specifically "The House Fire" and the eponymous "Good Lord Lorrie". Even Felker (the frontman) is one of the best songwriters around and really likes to tell a story. Even the shotgun mentioned in this song is also mentioned in The Housefire: "I got out with a photograph and my old Auto-5". Auto-5 refers to a Belgian-made Browning A5 shotgun. The details are just astounding.
Every time i hear this song it makes me proud to be living in Oklahoma and to have grown up 10 minutes away from Tahlequah the town were Turnpike Troubadours was formed
First time I heard the Turnpike Troubadours, I was driving through Nashville and "Pay No Rent" came on. Gave me chills. Called up a buddy of mine who's an Americana junkie, said, "You ever heard of these guys?" "Did I never tell you about them?" "Nope." "I'm - I'm not a very good friend." So you can say to all the people who are just learning about TT from this video, "You're welcome." If you give me a good fiddle and a good story, I'm putty in your hands.
THE TROUBADOURS ARE BACK!! Please do more of this I can’t get enough of your genuine love for music. You can tell the passion you have and it’s amazing. 7&7 by the troubadours has some great guitar playing!!
My favorite band. The first time I saw them was in Charleston at a tiny venue called the The Pour House, and then later I got to see them from the 2nd row at Red Rocks.
Love their song “Tornado Warning”, l learned “down here” and play it anytime I’m feeling down-picks me up for sure. Love their lyrics. So many great songs!
5:30 That's such sweet teaching right there. Telling us exactly how to lead into the fill lick with the major third, and then complete as desired. And man, it's that spice that you love, even though you may not hear it, it's how the song makes your soul sing.
Great video. Thanks for doing it. Discovered this band in maybe 2014 or so, and to this day I still remember where I was the first time I heard them and as soon as I heard that first line: "Well she was born in the morning, late October, San Antone. She's every girl I've ever known." and the twang of the bass and lead electric came in and I was hooked. I also remember when this was their newest album and where I was when hearing The Bird Hunters for the first time. I know everyone has their preferences and this is indeed one of their most popular songs, but it is absolute poetry and is one of my favorite songs period. Just the way the story around it comes to life with almost zero literal details about what the story is between him and the girl. There's never been any song that I can think of that's been written in a way that makes your head fill in the story so naturally. A Belgian-made Browning....those shotguns are no longer made in Belgium and if you've got one, it's probably a family heirloom (side note: in "The House Fire" they mention an old "Auto 5", which is the same gun). He says "a" Belgian made Browning, where he could have said "my" so for me, either he left his gun with Danny or Danny let him borrow it, which speaks to the depth of their trust and friendship. Jim, the old hunting dog....if you've got a good bird dog, you just don't give that up lightly, so this girl he moved for must have hit him hard. And there's so many more of these little details that just give so much depth to this story without coming out and literally telling you how he felt. Anyway, I know you're mostly focused on the stringed instruments here, but TT fans don't get many reaction vids and now that they're back together, I just felt like adding my buck o five.
Cherokee county=Cherokee County, Oklahoma, which is where Tahlequah, Ok, is, also the location of Normal Street. Also, the main setting of Where The Red Fern Grows.
Here I am crying and singing every word because turn pike always does this to me, these guys helped me kick addiction and I'm so glad they are back together and touring hope me and the ole lady can afford to see them in Pryor OK, because they really mean a he'll of alot to me.
Finally!!!! I’ve been hoping you’d find these guys they’ve gotta be my favorite band/group of all time. So glad you found them. This isn’t even close to their best if I had to recommend one only it’d probably be 1968.
7:37 John Fullbright sitting in on keyboard/accordion. His 2012 album "From the Ground Up" was Grammy nominated for best Americana album. I've listened to that album more than any other in my life. I love what you do Michael. Great content.
Old video, but man people like you that can watch or hear a song and immediately have the "ear" are incredible to watch, even better when they break it down for those of us who just make racket when playing. Great video all around for a great song.
You should really check out more of their stuff. They have some phenomenal stuff. They have been broken up for a while but have just reunited and started touring again.
I love that you pop up here with my favorite bands in consideration! I had tickets to a music festival to see these guys years back in Idaho that I had to miss. I still have not been able to see them live and I know they’ve been around for a while. I guess I need to head south. I’m in Oregon. Love this band!!!
Yes!!!!! I’ve been waiting on you to do a Turnpike song and this a top tier tune by them. Lyrically, musically, it’s just… the best. I haven’t even watched the video yet but I know you’re going to love them. My favorite band of all time!
I love it that Michael loves the down-home stuff. He’s on the same level as any of the great players and reviewers, but you never hear them say “straight down the middle and awesome!” And he loves the words of the songs! Yes! This was a great lesson, too. Thank you!
I heard their name before but never checked them out. This is awesome. It’s like all my influences in one band. A little classic rock, a little classic country, and a whole lot of poetry. This song is great and I’m checking them out!
God I love the Turnpike Troubadours. I thought I didn't like country music until I found them. I love their whole catalogue. Diamonds and Gasoline is one of all time favorite albums. Evan is an amazing songwriter and the band members are great players who fill out every song so nicely. I wouldn't change a note. I have also had the privilege of seeing them live a couple of times. They are back together. Just starting to tour again. I tried to buy tickets today to see them at Cain's Ballroom in April. Kane is one of the first places they played when they were taking off. General admission tickets went from $312 to over $1,200. But they are one of my favorites.
Started listening to these guys 4 or 5 years ago and they are now in my top 3 fav bands of all time. Had tix to see them in my hometown in Ohio and they cancelled and broke up right before. So glad they got back together and I'll get another opportunity to see them live

“A Dozen December’s” and “Time spent in Tulsa” one would think that’s got to be on purpose

Three chords (with a free 6-minor thrown in) and the truth. That's what we're all after, isn't it?
Nothing makes me happier, about being sad, than an Irish drinking fiddle waltz. Win for today. 💕🙋😥🎶
