I think Joel jr was so nonchalant about leaving the crime scene half cleaned up because he didn’t have any understanding of personal relationships. He probably couldn’t fathom anyone becoming concerned by not hearing from his parents because he himself is not capable of having those feelings for another person. His mothers boss had nothing to gain personally by calling the cops but did anyways for reasons Joel jr doesn’t understand, because he’s only driven by personal gain.

@@kasm7870 you aren’t giving him too much credit, he def was planning on leaving not enough evidence for people to even realize he was chopped up (he thought that if he completely destroyed all evidence and burned the house down that the police would rule it either a murder suicide or just a house fire incident). But he was foolish to think police would suspect that, family testimony would prove that he was a loving father and husband that would never do such a thing. And Joel jr being financially cut off right before would not escape the law enforcements attention

I have to imagine that his obliviousness hit him like a ton of bricks as he watched testimony where the mother's employer immediately contacts the police because of one missed appearance. It's as if he decided they were done living if they weren't living for him, only to immediately discover they had this entire substantive existence outside of him that included friendships with people who cared for them in ways that he never stopped to consider.

Reminds me of one of my siblings... they rarely talk to me or are interested in my life, but anytime they happen to hear about me doing something with friends or loved ones of my own, they are completely shocked, as though anytime I'm not talking to them about their life, I just sit in the dark next to my phone waiting for their next call. My very verbally abusive older brother called my mom randomly some weeks ago to invite her for some coffee and lunch... Told her to be wary of that.
He informer our mom that he was going to be remodeling the house... HER house, because he was having visits and he wanted the house pristine so he wanted us to be the maids to his friends, to get rid of the pets and to move out for the 10days of house destruction and if our items were there they were going to be moved or put in the trash... Informed her...
Mom was so shocked she didn't even tell him no. So when I got told his plans I raised hell, she finally snapped out and told him no. So he called her and threatened her etc.
So now she's making sure the house deeds and everything is under my name. Because if anything happens to her he would've probably taken all the inheritances... I think the reason is this: the two deputies knew that this was a crime scene, and a more serious crime scene than they'd ever encountered. They had no idea what else might have been in the house, but they could tell that the place was going to require serious and thorough investigation. The less they disturbed, the more chance there would be of the crime being successfully solved and prosecuted. (They couldn't have known that Joel had left a detailed confession in the house.) I'm sure it hurt to leave the dog, but under the circumstances, going by the book and leaving the house for the CSI team seemed like the best decision.

Jennifer (from Lisa's work), who called the police on the first day she didn't show for work, is a friend everyone should have. The fact that she insisted that the police go back to Lisa's house to check on her bolsters my point.

Although I felt the first welfare check was poor. I have no idea what a standard welfare check looks like and what officers cannot do without a warrant or probable cause, but the cars being home without the owners surely would have seemed odd. And I would have thought the officer could have at least jumped into the backyard like the detective did on the second visit. If he had done that Jenny wouldn’t have needed to insist because there was enough evidence there that I felt the first officer should have noticed. But they'll come around one day n really put forth an effort to change that, n it's a really awesome thing sucks it was completely fake n for a nefarious reason here. To think, if he just finished college like he should've, he couldve been really making a good amount doing plastic surgery he wouldn't even need insurance money. He clearly wasn't the genius he thought he was tho so maybe he was doomed to fail, n doomed his parents along side him. The walkthrough of the house made me so so sad. The old-fashioned almost kitschy styling of the house, the mildly cluttered garage as garages tend to be, the little knick-knacks everywhere, the dog toy stuffies on the living room carpet, that office *covered* with photos of their family. Joel Snr's closet having only blue jean trousers. The baby gate (that might have been for the dog but almost certainly may have been for their grandchildren) spattered with blood choked me up a little. This couple loved their family so so much. Thank you for the video and the walkthrough of this case.

It really is so shocking. I was a single mom to my son and doted on and probably indulged him too much at times. Love him beyond words, and to think a child could do this to such seemingly loving, caring parents who did all they could believing it would help ensure their sons success is beyond baffling. Makes me so incredibly sad for many reasons, but it also makes me look at my own relationship with my son. Not that I think he would do anything like this, but I relate in the way they tried to set him up to be successful. How? God, you never know wtf is going on in anyone's heart and mind. 😞

Absolute hats off to the forensics teams that went through the house and documented the poor parents in those bins in the bathroom.
I used to want to be a forensics officer but after watching crime shows and documentaries, I don’t have the mental fortitude for such an unfortunately necessary job.
This is a horrific case and well done to Dreading for presenting it in such a well-thought and respectful manner.
May their memories always be a blessing to the rest of the Guy family.
