Female Bear Shows Young Male How Mating Season is Done in the Rockies

- A female with two young cubs gently nudges an inexperienced - and slightly reluctant - male into action.
When Wild Canadian Year director Jeff Turner and a pilot from Hinton, Alberta set out to look for grizzly bears in the Rocky Mountain wilderness, they knew that the odds were not in their favour. "The landscape we were flying over was incredibly vast," says Turner, "the bears are just emerging from the den and are very spaced out."
They traveled to a very remote valley, far from any roads or human habitation with a Cineflex camera bolted to the helipcopter's frame and controlled from inside. Adult grizzly bears are usually solitary creatures, so Turner was amazed to capture four of them together. "It was like winning the lottery!"
From a vantage point in the sky, the crew was able to capture a rare springtime mating ritual. "This family drama was unfolding before our eyes," recalled Turner, "the male bear couldn't believe his luck at finding this female who was interested in him, but seemed kind of shy and confused. He doesn't seem to know what to do."

It's spaced so long because female bears give birth and raise cubs for a few years. They can't let males approach them while having cubs because the males kill the young ones. When the cubs are autonomous, the female will seek a mate again. An infertile female would constantly seek male "attention". I doubt that's your case.

It could be because he had a nice attitude and didn't go after the cubs, that if she mated with him, other males that could be more threatening would no longer show up.

Such beautiful photography & an endearing story...Several years ago I was honored by a very responsible breeder & given a beautiful, sweet & sensitive, young Exotic (shorthaired Persian) cat... It turned out he just didn't "work out" as a resident "stud" in her Breeding Program since he was very much a "reluctant Bridegroom" & a bit shy around the girls... (^,_^) : )
Always found it hilarious how the narrator pretends to know every little detail about the animals including what every little move means as they tell us the story
