- Two bears ended up in a deadly fight in Spain's Cantabrian mountains, which are home to around 350 bears.
Video footage shows a female bear protecting her cub from a larger male before both fighting bears fall off a cliff ledge.

The female bear did survive and manage to reunited with her cub. However, she did eventually succumb to her injuries. The male died shortly after the fall the female took longer and her cub was taken by researchers/forest services.

I saw this at a bar once. Two dudes tumbled down a long flight of stairs while fighting. No one died, but the stairs won the fight.

@@melanies.6030 The biologist in the video explains that infanticide is normal behavior for bears. That means the cub that survived, if male, would have an instinct to do the same thing. So the behavior isn't getting selected against by this kind of incident. Either the adult male spreads the behavior or the cub will grow up to do the same thing.
This is exactly why my mom always told me I should never fight a bear on the edge of a cliff.
I had to fight so many bears in cliffs before I learned this lesson.

I used to think fighting a bear on the edge of a cliff was good for you before watching this video. I’m starting to think that might not be true
There was a man who fended off a bear attack on a cliff. Was a close one for him, he acted on primal instincts and did exactly what they told you to do in a dangerous situation when confronted by a dangerous and wild predatory animal, and fortunately for him, it was on a cliff and the bear lunge at him a few times before making one final lunge, missed his target and went tumbling down the cliff off a couple rocks and wasn't seen again lol. The guy managed to find a crevice among the rocks on the cliff large enough for him and small for any bear, and hide in there to catch his breathe and believe it or not, he managed to capture all this on camera or footage and it was apparently uploaded onto UA-cam in a short or video with millions over views. I saw and I was blown away by how intense it was.
Yet again, a guy's quest for nookie ends in his downfall.

@malekat8539 the whole point is that males are much more expendable from a reproductive point. That's why hunters often prefer to kill males, it doesn't damage the long term population.

@@malekat8539 My point was that ONE male can impregnate many many females in the same season but, ONE female can only give birth to one batch of young at a time. Some females only have one offspring per pregnancy and added to that some mammals carry young for as long as 23 months before giving birth. Therefore, the loss of a breeding female of any mammalian species is far more serious than the loss of a male. It's basic maths and biology but, you can make it some weird political thing rather than basic facts if you want.
Natural selection happens with every animal, not just the human. The mother bear did what she had to do and acted out of self-defense.

Like most amateurs he just HAD to look up over his phone(?) to see it with his eyes and the video didn't follow his eyes! You see this all the time when someone is videoing and something suddenly happens. The person lowers his phone (pointing it at the ground) and watches with his eyes. The mother later died just like the male. But her heroic defense of her cubs saved them, and they were later assisted to adulthood by forest service rangers, and then released into the wild.
Mamma bear went over the edge and was like, "Oh no you don't, you're coming with me". Ironically, that's probably what ended up saving her life.

I was talking about what I recall from video that I saw [years ago?]. I could be wrong but, I recall that momma bear made it back to the cubs, but later died of her injuries and the cubs starved. The horrendous violence in this video is hard to watch and the uncut version was even more difficult. It's amazing that any of this is on video and an unfortunately stupid shame that life includes such pain and heartbreak.

He had already seriously injured her and the cubs and she was desperate. The two remaining cubs also had injuries. The mamma found a cave to rest up with her cubs but when rangers went to check, all 3 were dead. Very sad for such a brave and courageous mamma bear.😢

After looking for her for two days in the mountains of Northern Castile and Leon, near Palencia, the park rangers found the female bear's 15-meter-deep burrow. She's alive and well with her cub.
The male bear had been followed for at least 10 days by a moose. The female bear knew the male bear in passing but was not intimate with him, No one knows why the male bear had such animosity towards her cub, but the mother bear was not having it, as can be seem in the video. Luckily, the cub was rescued by the forest rangers, and it has been reported that a deal has been struck with a dog food manufacturer, the cub spending the next year endorsing the dog food company in exchange for free room and board in a local bear sanctuary.

I am glad the mother and cub are both alive! That male was huge compared to her! Since I found out how common it is with many male mammals, I was the boss of my children, no males, only me, their mother.... their father left, and I took care of them.... I had lovers, but they were not to be my childrens father, my kids were fine with only a mother. That might seem bad, but I loved my kids, and still do!

This video has been shamelessly altered into clips; all voices have been shamelessly added as if they were there and they definitely were not. Women in such circumstances tend to want to have another child with the new partner as her previous children become his child's half siblings so more likely to tolerate them
