There is no doubt about it; during that period of time racism was almost everywhere! However, Shirley Temple and Frank Morgan and the cast are simply great in this picture.
YUK! the only S.Temple I can watch today without cringing are The Bluebird (the cat steals the show), and Bright Eyes (GREAT performance by Jane Withers). I was a fan when i was 7 of Temple but today she is difficult to watch.
Lyrics: The Louisiana moon is shining On the starry sky, alone The lonesome an' the old are waiting And the lady loves, hmmmm While the shades of night are falling You can hear them softly calling Dixie-Anna Oh Miss Dixie-Anna Don't keep me waiting If you want to come out tonight Roll and shinin' And my heart divinin' Come on and meet me in the moonlight Can't you understand Love is in the air Love pretending there rolling everywhere Dixie-Anna Oh Miss Dixie-Anna Don't keep me waiting If you want to come out tonight Lone and shining And my heart inviting Come out and meet me in the moonlight Oh Dixie-Anna Don't you keep me waiting You know that ain't right.
Some of these lyrics are wrong. The lines "If you want to come out tonight. Roll and shiinin', And my heart divinin'." should be "Ain't you gonna come out tonight? Moon is shinin', and my heart is pinin'."
you have to remember the time this was written and performed in. the very beginnings of the civil rights movement were still 20 years away. I'm not saying it's right, but i am saying it was a different world and a different time. in 80 years are we going to look back on the fact that prop 8 was passed in CA and be as offended by that as we are by this - i hope so, but look at it from the same perspective.
"Dimples," the movie this scene comes from, was made in 1936 but the movie's opening scene tells us that the story of the movie takes place in the year 1850. Blackface shows were common then, and were an admittedly racist tribute to the power of black culture and people. The dumb joke about the suspenders, with its implications about black stupidity, is still painful to watch, though. Still, a gorgeous and charming song . . . BTW, all the bizarre info (here in Comments) from iriswigle is crap.
@nmaster13 Pre September and the Yankees were playing in NY. Mel Wigle went under the name of Mr. Frank as a baseball player. Some of the kids playing in the stadium had been arrested. Was all of their daddies baseball players? don't know. Mel did not throw the game as anticipated perhaps. My guess would be either 1950 or 1952 as their was a Jehovah's witness convention one year at the stadium. Perhaps under the FBI file name of Sybil Jason. It is so long ago.
Encantadora Shirley Temple, ela era muito inteligente, fofa demais ‼👏👏🥰🥰🇧🇷

Lyrics:
The Louisiana moon is shining
On the starry sky, alone
The lonesome an' the old are waiting
And the lady loves, hmmmm
While the shades of night are falling
You can hear them softly calling
Dixie-Anna
Oh Miss Dixie-Anna
Don't keep me waiting
If you want to come out tonight
Roll and shinin'
And my heart divinin'
Come on and meet me in the moonlight
Can't you understand
Love is in the air
Love pretending there rolling everywhere
Dixie-Anna
Oh Miss Dixie-Anna
Don't keep me waiting
If you want to come out tonight
Lone and shining
And my heart inviting
Come out and meet me in the moonlight
Oh Dixie-Anna
Don't you keep me waiting
You know that ain't right.

@goodsz15 I'm pretty sure pink's the correct color. My mom has a doll with a bunch of costumes from her movies, and this one is pink.
It's only a movie.
Os filmes da Shirley Tempos são tão bons, que deviam ser dublados em Portugues!! Que pena 😔😔😔
@iriswigle I never knew Shirley was arrested. Where did you find that out, I'd like to read about it
they should make a modern version of shirley temple i go see that in a heart beat cuz i love shirley temple
she was born at the right place for the right time. Let's move on. Bleah! I like old movies but this is cringe worthy
