This debate reminds me of Monty Python’s sketch about the right to have babies from „Life of Brian“, only then it was meant as a joke and not it’s for real
You know transgender people also existed when this film came out right? The Pythons weren't as ignorant of LGBT issues as most people at that time. TBF, Cleese though is somehwwhat clueless on trans issues though, even today. Like even in the film, trans people will not say they want to transition "to have babies" since trans people do not expect to suddenly, magically have the opposite reproductive organs... So the joke in this sketch is a strawman. But Eric Idle, who plays Loretta in the film, is supportive of transgender people and IIRC has made Loretta into a more celebrated character in recent musical versions etc. Also, in the Life of Brian, it should be mentioned that they do actually accept Loretta later on in the film and start using the name Loretta instead of Stan etc. With Cleese's character apologising to Loretta for making a misogynistic comment. Part of the humour came from the novelty since not many people were familiar with trans people back then. Graham Chapman was also a gay man, and they were cool with him even though society was very unaccepting of LGBT people at the time. But fortunately things have changed for the better and there's more awareness and understanding of what gay or trans people go through. But genuinely what is your concern here? Do you not like that society treats transgender people with respect rather than viewing them as freaks? Would you prefer that people just be mercilessly cruel to people who are born with the wrong sex?
