I was working on a summer work term betwen 2nd and 3rd year undegrad, and went to a movie theatre to pass some time. I had no idea what I was going to see, just picking something from the cheap night at the cineplex. And what did I see? Life of Brian. I had not seen any previews or trailers. I watched it cold and unawre. And there was me and 2 other people in the Tuseday night show at 11PM. And during this, and several other scenes, I nearly lost control of my bodily functions.
I love how they go right from the sermon on the mount to a stoning and he asks his mom. calmly he asks, "why aren't women allowed to go to the stoning" and she sneers back like he's dumb "Because it's written! Thats why!" - freaking gold

What makes the Sermon scene so ingeniously funny is because the crowd is so huge, they all clearly respect Jesus for turning up. It's only the back of the crowd that have a rough time. Writing at its cleverest.

I remember a TV debate about the Life of Brian, with John Cleese and Michael Palin, against one Malcombe Muggeridge and an Anglican Bishop, who objected to the film. They called it tenth grade, and that people would forget about it soon. Muggeridge died, the Bishop went to jail for abusing choir boys, and here we are in 2021, and the film has lost none of its brilliance. Take that, Christianity.

We watched this and a couple other Python movies, laughing through the night at a Catholic retreat weekend in the 1980s, before we climbed a hill barefoot and had morning mass while the sun rose. It was a truly wonderful weekend!! 💙🌻🌅

If I had a top 20 funniest lines or scenes, I think at least eight of them would be from this movie. My favorite line in this movie was, "How should we fuck off, oh Lord?" That's so damned funny, you don't even need the context.
I love the whole "He's Not the Messiah!"/ "Excuse me, are you a virgin?" scene. And the stoning. But it's all good.

Pilate's "Biggus Dickus" scene was my favorite, though. I don't think any movie has ever made me laugh as hard as this one did.

We watched this and a couple other Python movies, laughing through the night at a Catholic retreat weekend in the 1980s, before we climbed a hill barefoot and had morning mass while the sun rose. It was a truly wonderful weekend!! 💙🌻🌅
My absolute personal favorite Monty Python movie. My eyes still water uncontrollably from laughter. I have the VHS but I still haven't found even a DVD if not a blue ray copy. I have to be sitting upright or I can't catch my breath
Blame religious censorship for that lack of distribution …. The humourless BASTARDS are still trying to oppress us and take away our Freedoms.
