I had a frustrating experience recently where someone was asking me what they should get and I directed them to the First Base on YYE and they saw all the options and then wanted to start out with a more expensive metal one. When I told them it won't do them any good to start out with metal they seemed to take it as "metal is for once you're really good" and they kept arguing with me no matter what I said. I really wish I could just get what you said in this video through people's heads sometimes.
I started with a cheap duncan imperial to learn to throw, then I moved to a yoyo king merlin to learn some basic string tricks and got decent with it, after that I went to a yomega maverick(partly unresponsive) to learn and practice basics binds. After that I got a yoyo king grind control(unresponsive) but it was cheap so I used flowable silicon and the indented bearing(from the grind control) and modified my yomega maverick to completely unresponsive and can do tons of tricks. And on order now I am getting the yoyo factory heist which is a tiny yoyo to practice accuracy. That's about it. I started extremely basic and can now easily do unresponsive and many string tricks and I've only been at it for 3 months(I also practice at work because we have a lot of down time lol) Tl;dr version: start basic and work your way up, learn yoyo maintenance, and have patience
I really like this list, I decided to go for the fizz yoyo from yoyotricks after I tried and failed with a butterfly because it bounced instead of sleeped, I am getting my first metal yoyo tomorrow. I ordered a b-grade winter solstice since I learned a bind on the fizz
Great advice. 3 good beginner magic yoyos are the N12, T5 Overlord and the Node. The Node especially looks and plays well above its $13 price tag. I'd say stay away from high walled unresponsives, they are so very unforgiving. All in all superb council.
Actually, an unresponsive Whip or a one is kinda good because it's less stable and forces you to be better. If you had a forgiving yoyo like a draupnir (rich boy) then their style will be sloppy when they get better. I got this info from Sam Hicks
I probably wouldn't want to start an actual beginner most high wall yoyos. Yes it forces you to be clean but responsive yoyos already do that and they might get frustrated and quit. One of my first throws was a YYJ Revolution and if I hadn't already purchased something better I would've been pretty discouraged.
When I started out the BBB Endeavor was getting hype and that appealed to the collector side of me and I got a limited edition. It is probably one of my most expensive yet underplayed yoyo's because of that damn high wall.
My first yoyo was a fixed-axle Duncan Butterfly, but I got it back in the 80s before ball-bearing yoyos were even really a thing. Everything you said about it is correct lol
I feel like that people should definitely start on a plastic responsive. Metal responsives... They're a bit dangerous. I mean, you're giving a person who has no experience in yoyoing a chunk of metal that may just randomly try to return to your hand. If you don't know how to do the very basics (throwing and catching), you can't control the chunk of metal spinning at a high speed and it either has a high chance of hitting your hand or breaking stuff around.
When I was new to throwing, I remember practicing loops with a fizz only to slam the thing into my sternum after a missed loop. I felt it for a week, but i’m sure i’d have felt it for the rest of my life if it was a metal responsive.
Next time maybe talk about the differences between "responsive" "unresponsive" considering the topic involves beginners. Hope this tip helps grow your channel a bit. Unfortunately I wasn't able to watch past 2 minutes bc I needed to look up responsive yoyos.
What about those clutched autoreturns like the Yomega Brain or Duncan Reflex? Right now I'm just looking to throw and return for fun and not worry about tricks, and also I don't like the look of those open sided yoyos without the sidecaps.
Best starter throws are the ones with a slim and a wide bearing that are inexpensive. YYF sells great beginner to pro kits with stuff that you need and they include the Arrow in both kits for good reason.
I gotta say, this is really good advice. I wish I'd had this video as a resource when I first started lol. I still have my first base, and use it to teach others, though my partner has moved on to the replay pro now that she can bind.
I got a starter kit, came with the spinstar, the arrow with the responsive bearing in it (came with an unreaponsive one too for later) and a replay, i waited a bit to touch thw replay cause i wanted to start with basics before i went into binding. Still dont use unresponsive ones often yet, as im still learning resonsive stuff. But i will practise binding a couple times a day so when i do get to unresponsive yoyoing i have binding down already. (I also picked up a godspeed yoyo, bcuz i wanted a purple yoyo, and my fiance loves blue so the purple and blue godspeed was great, hasnt arrived yet. But thats def gonna be a later yoyo
I had a nightmare from yo-yo factory gifted to me as my second unresponsive yo-yo after the sage, and I have hit it on the floor many times even having learned all the basics. I’ve been lucky the rings have not dislodged, but if I cringe every time.
I started off with a Duncan ProYo. When I got a knot, I forgot that the yoyo was meant to sleep and didn't realize it was meant to sleep after I got a Sage. The Sage was not very responsive for me, and in my opinion slightly overpriced. I recommend the MagicYoyo K7. It has hubstacks that make it easier for your first throw, and it is metal for long enough sleep times. It is super snappy and much more accessible across the world as most beginner yoyos are from the USA. This can be found on eBay for around 14 AUD. And once you have moved on, you could get an unresponsive bearing or a N12/M002. They are great for their price and about the same price as the K7 (the M002 is a bit more, 20 AUD). MagicYoyos seem dodgy, but they work great for beginners.
I so I like how I'm seeing all these different Duncan models and designs. Cause I currently stand firm behind yomega and their any variation of the raider, weather it be the 1988 original, hyper, the stealth, or the ex. Who's design I might add has not only preformed in the highest levels of competition, but who's origanal patent holds their value if not increases over the years. With no real noticeable difference the basic raider released in 88' vs its 2020 edition. Even tho the original it self was and still is one of the most versatile yoyos to date. Despite haveing multiple variations of the platform, they all were built with the same specs. The other 4 or 5 variations variations sporting different profiles for different core applications, but still able to show high versatile proficency in all environments.
I'm a massive fan of the Duncan Pro Z for beginners...especially if they can find it at a local walmart. Comes as a responsive slim...but can be made into a wider unresponsive. I mean it's not the greatest thing out there...but it works and I love the idea behind it. It's capable enough for all the intermediate/advance tricks and I'm even using a second in the slim mode to learn to loop.
Getting back into yoyos after a 15yr break. Kind of feel like I already screwed up by ordering two magic yoyos ! I can at least put better bearing in them right?
Duncan Butterfly was my 3 yoyo, Imperial was my 2nd and Neo was my third. They are shitty (I love 'em though), but you should definitely start responsive.
The butterfly xt is my favorite yoyo it was my second it’s not super responsive so I can get it to spin for long my first was a NED yoyo it’s super responsive but super good for tricks i got it at school in 3rd or 4th grade at a NED yoyo assembly I don’t like bi metals they hurt my hands
I just got back into throwing after my 3 year old daughter drug out my SB-2 from a closet. Still in the box, good shape. I had so much fin with it I got to looking online and ended up spending around $10 for a Magic Locus V6. It was fantastic, cant believe how much these have evolved. Just got an N-12 and a N-8, which really are wild cause non responsive didnt exist back when the SB-2 was the hot thing
Nah, the Duncan butterfly is a great starter yo-yo, I started off with it, and it can definitely spin longer then 3 seconds. If you can throw a straight throw with a butterfly then you learned how to throw the right way. And I feel like the butterfly makes moving on alot easier. I'm currently teaching my friend to yo-yo and I have him a butterfly and he learned way faster then my other friends ( and I used to give my other friends a dv888 to teach before I started to use the Duncan butterfly ).
I also started out with a butterfly and went straight to a metal (given it was the MagicYoYo N11). The butterfly is great for getting the throw down. Once you can throw a yoyo properly, move to metals.
Yeah dude, it's not going to get you far, and not all of them open up like they used to. Definitely not something to take too serious! It is only a $5 yo yo, so it's possible you also got a lemon. The XT is WAY better.

Maybe is it me. But I mostly yoyo over grass or carpet so don't have many dings. I would say most people beginners don't do this. They practice on or over hardwood or concrete
What do you think of the Vosun Zebra? It's a responsive metal, and it's only, like, 15 - 20$! It's a bit small, but it might be good for kids with smaller hands. Wuld you consider making a comparison between it and the Topyo Creater?
If it was purchased on the cheap like the $16 I paid I guess it doesn't matter but I bet them rings would come off easily with one good ding, nothing is better for newbifiles then plastic. Then slowly ease into the metals.

A suggestion for future videos, please lower the music so it's just audible, or remove it entirely. The way it is now is rather annoying and takes away from what you are saying.
Wait lemme get this terminology straight... You ~play Yoyo, you dont play ~with yoyo... Responsive means it comes up on its own. Unresponsive means what now? And it's based on what bearings you use??? So any yoyo could be either???????? Bruh
Technically no one ever really needs a bi-metal.
I had a frustrating experience recently where someone was asking me what they should get and I directed them to the First Base on YYE and they saw all the options and then wanted to start out with a more expensive metal one. I really like this list, I decided to go for the fizz yoyo from yoyotricks after I tried and failed with a butterfly because it bounced instead of sleeped, I am getting my first metal yoyo tomorrow. I ordered a b-grade winter solstice since I learned a bind on the fizz
Fizz was my first yoyo of that shape. I still use it sometimes because it's fun.
Summer solstice was my first metal
@@CharlesSeipke same here. Fizz is fun, loving the winter tho

You ~play Yoyo, you dont play ~with yoyo...
Responsive means it comes up on its own. Unresponsive means what now?
And it's based on what bearings you use??? So any yoyo could be either????????
Bruh
Sell me the other half of your n12 ;) looks pretty rad, swapped!
A boobie yoyo?
?
Making fun of beboo or however you spell it.
Oh, yeah, they're just shit - I like boobies, I hate beeboo yoyos, lol
The god of death one looks cool but I have not heard good things abt it. Boobies are great, beeboo not so much.
