Hi Gentry my name is Michael I met you 2 years ago a little before the country league/ contest. At the yo-yo museum in Chico. I would think you wouldn't remember me, but I just wanted to say your really good and keep it up your doing a good job! - Michael
I was born in 1990 and from a random conversation I had, I found myself buying a new yoyo. Had an xbrain and fireball back in the day and have an arrow on the way. Stumbling on yoyo videos as I tried to find the right one to buy with my low skill low knowledge level. I like that he keeps it short and sweet.
What a cool vid. My kids got a really bad yoyo from someone a couple months ago, and my brother and i actually had a good yoyo when i was young (it had a bearing but was responsive). So i did some research and got my boys the Fizz beginner yoyo and since bought Gentry's Replay Pro for myself. Sooo much fun, and so affordable! Thanks Gentry and crew!
I only ever played with an 80s style responsive when I grew up. My cousin who was older than me had a really good yoyo that I learned the basics on. Learning about and then buying an unresponsive has revolutionized my life. Contrary to everyone else, I think learning tricks on this is much easier and more fun.
I get that it's yyf and you guys don't like to acknowledge that your competitors exist too much, but like... how could you not mention the duncan butterfly or freehand? Not to mention some of the stuff that came out of yomega and yoyojam in the 90s and early 2000s. Even with yyf alone, things like the superstar, protostar, and 888 were all probably worth mentioning.
Was never allowed the yoyo's with the bearings simply because my parents "KNEW" that bearings didn't matter and all yoyo's were the same. Now im here with a hand me down Maverick rigged with a skate bearing since im broke for a while. Something theraputic about it all.
I always thought the Bumblebee GT was one of the most revolutionary yoyo's in history in that brought such incredible performance at a very affordable price. Basically every kid that was going cool tricks had learned on one. Having seen the video, he definitely took a different approach by showing yoyo's that revolutionized but may not have necessarily been popular. This was super educational and interesting
Really dig the little fella pick. Modern shape? Performance? Fancy materials? Art anodizing? Nah! - It's just cool. That's the way we all should look at yoyos.
I have an older friend of mine, who had an uncle who won a yo-yo contest in the 60’s. The trick he won with, was his own. He called it the “bowl of spaghetti” and pretty much all he did was grab a bunch of the string, and bunch it together to look like noodles haha.
I can agree with the comments saying Shutter doesn't exactly fit here, but only because it's the top 5. Shutter absolutely belongs in the Top 10, mostly because I truly believe someone else would have broken the price barrier at some point. Yo-yos used to not cost that much either, so there was a period where the price began to run away and was brought back down. But as revolutionary as the Shutter was, there are a few yo-yos not mentioned that had a massive impact on yo-yoing and whether or not yo-yos would survive long enough for the Shutter or its predecessors to be made at all.
6:12 street sold yoyos still come apart here in the philippines so I was confused, but then no one buy them that much especially young ones nowadays, which is sad
Playmaxx, Yohans family's company was bought out by Duncan... not sure that it was altogether amicable? google is your friend there ;).. playmaxx were fairly litigious though... what goes around comes around. My favourite yoyo of all time - Henry's Coral Snake - was never the same after they were forced to change the design of the response system (could have been by Duncan after the buyout though?)
Heck Yeah! That was a great history Lesson. We Love the Shutter. I got into YoYos in the mid 90’s with Yomega, but I’m glad we left the X-Brain behind lol YoYoFactory is the best YoYo Company hands down 🙌 My first was a Velocity and I knew I found the right company to bring me into the modern age of YoYo. Gentry you’re the coolest player in the World!
Love yoyos been doing it since 90s late 98 99 and it exploded. Now the 2000s. Well after 2005 it is insane how far it is no matter what age u are. U should try a yoyo
i need to get back into yoyo playing. i remember i got trapeze on a awful dollar store yoyo that should not have been able to do it and got it down perfectly. then it broke and i stopped though i loved it.
I don't agree with the last one, sure the shutter was a nice yoyo for its price, winning a world title but what about yoyós like the dv888 or Duncan yoyós, they definitely should have thought out the last one more as there where many yoyos that did well like the shutter, it shouldn't have been based off of the price of the yoyo for its quality of work. It should have been based off of the history and how it changed up the yoyo game, bringing new ideas and impacting the game dramatically The shutter definitely did not do as much work as other modern day yoyos.
