I would absolutely consider it. Aside from the movements being absolutely top notch, the finish on cases and dials equals or exceeds most of the Swiss brands. As for quartz, there's a limited edition green dial GMT that uses a special aniversary version of the 9F movement that's accurate to 5 seconds a year which I'd happily own and wear. GS watches are incredibly underrated and given the level of watch you get, absolute bargains. At some point, more watch collectors are going to realise that. I hope to have a couple of my own before that happens.
I recently added an Omega Seamaster 41mm to my collection, but in the next case was the GS line and I was very... tempted. In the end I really had my heart set on a diver so I went with the Omega, but if they'd had that green dial SBGV245 I might have come home with two watches. Until you see a GS close-up you have no idea just how amazing the fit and finish is. It almost doesn't look real. The quartz is simply the best of its kind and the spring drive just glides. World-class.

Thanks for a very informative video on the Grand Seiko!! It is at the top of my Grail list......Rolex is not even on my list. Not that there is anything wrong with Rolex. The technology, ingenuity, and horological history behind the Grand Seiko really speaks to me for some reason.
Wow. The way you've told Seiko's history sheds a whole new light on the way they make their watches. Also the close up views of the GS give a good look in that they spared no expense on the parts if you know what to look for.

Fascinating. Japan (particularly Honda), nearly destroyed the British motorcycle industry using basically the same playbook, proving once again that laurels are a dangerous place to rest.
@@pyeclam Thank you for your interest. The short answer to your question would be "Both, and then some." Disclaimer: The cause given to the decline of the British motorcycle industry depends a lot on who you ask, and my opinion is worth no more than the next guy's. It certainly can't be blamed on any one single event, but it is undeniable that the appearance around the beginning of the 1970s of inexpensive Japanese bikes that didn't leak oil, had better electrical systems and brakes, and benefited from advances in engine technology had a lot to do with that decline. (At the time, Triumph's flagship Bonneville was still powered by an engine largely unchanged from the engine Edward Turner developed in the '30s.) Add on Japan's development of mass production techniques, throw in labor problems in the UK manufacturers at the time... You see where this is going. The Japanese basically upped the game and the old guard, which really hadn't made significant improvements in decades, struggled to catch up. Don't get me wrong - I love Brit Bikes from that era and have owned several. Also, Triumph in particular has recovered well under the leadership of John Bloor and currently makes outstanding motorcycles. But for quite a while back then, when I really needed to go a long distance in a hurry I grabbed the keys to the Honda and left the Triumph in the garage.
Having owned a number of rolex, tudor, JLC, sinn, omega and others, I can confidently say that, for me, the GS is the best of the lot. Best value - for the hand finishing and accuracy you get. Best looking - the 44 GS design is just gorgeous from all angles and makes you think just how lazy some Swiss producers are. How many rolex are cased identically? Best dials - come on, there's nobody like them, just look at he new white birch. If they ever manage to shave a couple of mm from the height and add a micro adjustment to the bracelet, then they really will rule the world. The new high beat and spring drive movements are unbelievable. More accurate than anything else, finished to ALS standards. Just next level stuff. I've now got three GS watches and I feel very lucky to have them.
@@rizaalfian1396 I hope one day you do. My first GS was a 37mm silver quartz. Absolutely fabulous watch. Possibly the best daily wearer out there and the cheapest one GS sell. Still a lot of money I know, but boy that's a good watch.

I'm actually thinking of going to Japan to buy one and then just not declaring it when I come home For the import duties and custom charges I get the whole trip payed, and then some. The box will be sent home with the post service, and the watch will be carried on the wrist across the borders. Foolproof?
The Japanese are simply some of the most organized and “competitive” culture to have existed. Once introduced to capitalism, they had some catching up to do. Their existing culture and values catapulted them forward in that economic system very quickly! They take the successful ideas of the world and somehow manage to make them BETTER and cost LESS
Tf r u talking about Japans population is overworked and their economy has been in stall for the last 2 decades w/ zero % interest rates and over 200% debt to GDP. USA is heading in the same direction.
The Japanese are definitely organized and detail oriented much like the Germans, which is why both countries make the best cars and have the best engineering. However, both countries have also invaded other countries and stole so much from them, which is why they were able to advance while the rest of the world was catching up from poverty and civil wars. Japan like the Europeans in general are too conservative, which is why they are not doing very good in next generation technologies like computers and AI. In that regard, the USA and China will dominate the world. I believe South Korea will come in close third even ahead of Japan because South Korea is very competitive and does not regard for the obsolete traditions unlike the Japanese or the Europeans. With everything that’s said, the future of the economy belongs to whoever adapts the fastest. There’s simply no room for traditions anymore. Tesla has already overtaken both the Japanese and the European automobile market. Apple Watch has already sold more than both Japan and Europe. The future is in the binary. No more samurai showdown or Rolex market that exists solely for the appearances sake.
I have had a GS for about 5 years. Every time I wear it I marvel at its flawless finish and the attention to detail not to mention the accuracy of its mechanical movement.
I just began my watch journey this past weekend with a Seiko 5 SNK-793 and a Timex Weekender. I'm wearing the Seiko at this moment, and his little documentary just made me proud of it. I bought it because other reviewers recommended Seiko 5 as a good value for a starter watch, but now I can appreciate the corporate culture and history behind my affordable little timepiece, even if it is to its Grand Seiko relative as a snowman is to Michaelangelo's David. :)
@@sobrcelt Hi Sobrcelt, I want to buy Seiko 5 with blue dial too and it's arriving soon. Furthermore, I still need to buy the old classic type of white-dial black-leather watch. Do you have any suggestion type of series from Seiko that has good value too and the price is on par with Seiko 5 with white-dial black-leather watch? I look further for your reply. Thank you.
Personnally, I find the Swiss watchmaker companies' mentality to have been so despicable all along watchmaking history in their competition against Japan that it's well enough to keep me from ever buying Swissmade watches. They can keep their crazy marketing and insane skyrocketting price strategies by artificially creating imaginary shortages for themselves. Seiko has been first in ALL domeins, and remained very humble, which Swiss makers were never able to accept nor manage. This brand deserves the most genuine respect.

@@Q.Q.Ah, but a Precionist is a quartz movement. A Spring Drive is a mechanical movement with a quartz escapement. The Spring Drive is better compared for accuracy to a conventional Chronometer, which it beats by a country mile.
@@marcusnz232 - There's no question that, compared to other more conventional, non-quartz regulated automatic/mechanical movements, the Spring Drive seems to have a clear advantage in terms of accuracy. Nevertheless, it is quartz-regulated, so, in terms of accuracy, it is perhaps more apropos to compare with a quartz movement, which is also regulated by a quartz, just with a different drive system. If the Swiss Astronomical Observatory trials were held today, it's doubtful that the Spring Drive would be listed in the same category as that of conventional mechanical movements. Whether it would be included in a separate "hybrid" category or in the quartz category I wouldn't know, but most definitely not with conventional mechanicals.

I would rather have a Grand Seiko than virtually any other watch on the planet. Just cant afford one is all......
You’ll get there man!
Less liabilities more work!
go for older GS....
.....yet.
You'll get there.
How much do they cost
I recently added an Omega Seamaster 41mm to my collection, but in the next case was the GS line and I was very... tempted. In the end I really had my heart set on a diver so I went with the Omega, but if they'd had that green dial SBGV245 I might have come home with two watches. Until you see a GS close-up you have no idea just how amazing the fit and finish is. It almost doesn't look real. The quartz is simply the best of its kind and the spring drive just glides. World-class.
This is the third time i watch this video. Everytime i come back here, i catch up to what i might have missed previously in this video.
And this guys voice is mesmerizing.. the background music volume is adjusted perfectly to add to the ambiance.
Thanks for a very informative video on the Grand Seiko!! It is at the top of my Grail list......Rolex is not even on my list. Not that there is anything wrong with Rolex. They are awesome watches in their own right, and people buy them for their own personal reasons. I just feel like a "Follower" if I were to buy a Rolex.
I already own a Seiko, it wasn't expensive, and it's not the last word in accuracy or quality but I love it. I would 100% buy a Grand Seiko as well one day.
Alex Oliver grand Seiko is the luxury series of seiko company.
Fascinating. Japan (particularly Honda), nearly destroyed the British motorcycle industry using basically the same playbook, proving once again that laurels are a dangerous place to rest.
What did they do to destroy the British motorcycle industry? Was there a technological advancement they used or was it simply superior build quality?
pyeclam I want to know too lol. I'm just as curious as you
@@pyeclam Thank you for your interest.
I’ll also add the Mazda Miata , which was created as a turn key reliable small British sports car.
Poison ivy is worse.
I've now got three GS watches and I feel very lucky to have them.
thank you for your sharing sir. hope one day i have atleast one GS , but for me its just a dream because its too expensive...
@@rizaalfian1396 I hope one day you do. My first GS was a 37mm silver quartz. Absolutely fabulous watch. Possibly the best daily wearer out there and the cheapest one GS sell. Still a lot of money I know, but boy that's a good watch.
@@rizaalfian1396try looking on chrono they go down in value a decent amount
I have considered it and when I had a choice between a Swiss watch and a Seiko, I ended up with a Seiko. And for the price, dollar for dollar, I ended up with a limited edition piece instead of a basic model swiss.
I also believe that my Automatic Seiko movement is (like it was in the past) more if not just as accurate as Swiss movements today. It would be nice to get a nice Swiss watch, but I appreciate the accuracy of my quartz and automatic watch - now to save for a spring movement.
Loved the video and you explained exactly how I feel about this brand - even when I own two of their pieces
10 seconds a year, that is some insane accuracy, only the Japanese are mad to imagine....
If they ran their train service with that accuracy, they would have to cut down a whole rain forest for all those apology letters.
Same as a breitling superquartz, or a Longines VHP
@Whiteboy14 I think you are conflating a mechanical/spring drive to an actual quartz (and battery) watch from GS.
My God, that is the most beautiful second hand that you have ever featured in one of your videos. Simplistic, minimalist elegance and STUNNING!!
Checking back in to the channel that made me fall in love with watches just to say I am now the proud owner of a Grand Seiko. Thanks for everything you guys do
I'm actually thinking of going to Japan to buy one and then just not declaring it when I come home
For the import duties and custom charges I get the whole trip payed, and then some.
The box will be sent home with the post service, and the watch will be carried on the wrist across the borders. Foolproof?
Depends on how well the custom officer knows his watches.
Foolproof would be if you have a receipt from one in your home country.
True. Out of all the foreign cultures out there Japanese culture is my favorite.
Tf r u talking about Japans population is overworked and their economy has been in stall for the last 2 decades w/ zero % interest rates and over 200% debt to GDP. USA is heading in the same direction.
Sending them US dollars in exchange for cheap labor, their economy has only grown 1% yoy for almost 30 years
The Japanese are definitely organized and detail oriented much like the Germans, which is why both countries make the best cars and have the best engineering.
@@DanielK1213th Tesla and Apple haven't overtaken anything.
I have two, the Snowflake and a diver. I couldn't be happier, they're freakishly accurate, and just gorgeous.

Haha. Seems to be a hot topic at the moment! Pleased to see Grand Seiko/Seiko getting more and more recognition!
There will be an intro in the form of King Seiko 4502 review that I FINALLY recorded after ONLY a year 😄
I’ve owned a Seiko Diving watch since I was in the Navy, over 30 years ago. It keeps impeccably, razor sharp, samurai sword sharp, time.
Congrats...!
6:41 that's nice I like it when seconds and minutes line up exactly with the markers just like they should
Even with ticking quartz, the hand lining up PERFECTLY with each tick is a thing to behold.
I have had a GS for about 5 years. Every time I wear it I marvel at its flawless finish and the attention to detail not to mention the accuracy of its mechanical movement.
Closest thing we’ll get to a Seiko 5 review from this wonderful channel
Own a couple of those haha
He would still make it sound amazing and make me want one.
@Dat Phung Thank you! So far, so good; it runs just fine, and I still love it!
@Whiteboy14 You're confusing Japan with China.
I already own Quartz GS and the fact they added hacking to set the hour had independently not to mess up with accuracy is just perfection. GS is a watch that has so much advancements that even quartz version is a luxury watch.
Nothing cooler than a smooth sweeping spring drive seconds hand. Brillant.
The Only reason I would accept a Vacheron or AP instead of Grand Seiko would be to sell them immediately and buy 20 GSs instead. Wonderful watches, chuffed.
to bits, I hope.
Well, it depends which kind of Pp ap and gs (there are 50k gs and 10k ap)
@@bzzz179 First of all, you're comparing a far more expensive watch to Grand Seiko, and second of all, I'd much rather have Spring Drive than tourbillon. I hate that tourbillons always have to be shown out in the open, and that really doesn't fit my style.
@@bzzz179 For those who like AP Royal Oaks, it probably is. My own choice if I were willing and able to spend the premium for some high end mechanical bling (which is all a tourbillon is), would be the JLC Master Ultra Thin Tourbillon. I kind of prefer my watches not to be mistaken for pipe fittings. Just saying.

This was basically a Seiko hype video and I'm not even mad. I didn't know the history of Grand Seiko until watching this and wow it's impressive.
Still wearing my Seiko Quartz Divers 200 I was given in 1990. After numerous battery changers, it’s still going strong and is extremely accurate.
That second's hand's movement of the spring drive is totally mesmerizing. I'm lost.
A review of the JLC Reverso range distinguishing the sizes (which they seem to have a lot of), and past (like the Grande Taille) vs present models would be much appreciated
Lol imagine being so great that the swiss cancel their our own tourneys to avoid being beaten by you, that’s Grand Seiko for you
That continuous sweep on the spring drives is so gorgeous. The Spring Drive Snowflake (SBGA211) is the one watch I want the most... someday I'll be able to get one, hopefully!
I purchased my grand seiko in japan. It’s the reference sbgr271. 37mm, 9s automatic, and absolutely beautiful. It’s my everyday watch and my first luxury purchase. I know I’ll be wearing it until my final days. Grand seiko is indeed worth it. Sure I wish to purchase maybe another few luxury pieces over time, like a Rolex. But my grand seiko will always be a treasure to me.
Not only did I consider, I pulled the trigger. Currently a very happy owner.
I like the way they are so low key. If anyone shows unwanted interest... 'Its just a Seiko!"
Yup. It is.
For me it's in the detail. C'est la vie.
I think this type of flattery will only get the channel recognized by Seiko/Grand Seiko.
In terms of perception, I see value in both the Swiss's and Japanese's approach to product creation....even if the discussion would be Omega vs Grand Seiko, and I'm glad that the two have differences while competing in the same space. It keeps things interesting and alive. It keeps both on their toes, and keeps them honest.
Excellent review of the Brand here, and I do believe GS to be devastatingly heavy hitter in this realm, and I believe the general consensus is that people love and respect the brand.
I just love how smooth the sweeping second hand is
that sweep is crazy smooth
Here’s one big reason why I love Grand Seiko. I never walked into a GS boutique and told my money wasn’t good and I’d be put on a “waiting list.”
I want a Grand Seiko Spring Drive more after watching this Video :)
Grand Seiko is much better image than Rolex. I would much more trust and start business with someone who wears Grand Seiko, and would be very cautious if I saw a Rolex on someone's wrist...
hahahahaha. you're a complete loser.
Wow such a dumb comment
Grand Seiko is for me as an owner of a 4520-8000 is simply the best Watch Brand/ Watches in the World. I would everytime prefer a Grand Seiko against a Rolex. Except the Work of the Independents like Smith/Daniels/Prescher/AHCI members and others like Mbf etc.
Hi... can anyone please tell me the model number of the Grand Seiko at 1:05 please...Thanks
It is SBGA273. It is probably out of stock now, but hopefully they will run another batch. It has a display back too.
If Grand Seiko ever releases a Spring Drive or Hi-Beat GMT in 38 mm (do dreams ever come true?) with a black (or silver) sunburst or textured dial à la peacock / Mt Iwate and with a splash of red (or blue), I'm getting one and sell all my other watches, only keeping my G-Shock GW-M5610 and SXK013. There, a full-Japanese 3-watch collection I would be content with. Thanks for this great video, as usual :)
I guess that you are looking for a Rolex Explorer. I love that watch however my favorite is a GS GMT.
I bought a Grand Seiko just because I was fascinated with the spring drive movement. The impeccable finishing is just a plus.
I'm a fan of your channel and would love to see a (couple of) German Sinn watch(es) featured.

You KNOW the Swiss we’re talking all kinds of crazy shit, too. Then Seiko came around and mopped the floor with me lol.

My Spring Drive Grand Seiko Snowflake is without doubt the best watch I have ever owned. In 110 days, it has gained 0.21 seconds per day...
That would make it ~6.3 seconds/mo. That's not exemplary. My Precisionist, a far "lesser" watch, ran under .8 seconds fast per month, equating to under .03 sec/day.
Is this Sarcasm? Can you explain? I am here just because of the Seiko name and know nothing much about mechanisms etc.
How do you know?

COSC stands for -4 +6 / day, GS standars for automatic caliber stands for -3 +5 / day beating swiss COSC.
Spring Drive technology its in a league of its own, does not have COMPETITOR.
Detail and finish including caliber decorations its on par with ultra high end expensive swiss brands like J. Le Coultre.
Foot note:
Rolex produce around 4 millions watches / year, GS only 5000.
Thats says a lot about exclusivity.
Rolex does not produce 4 million watches per year, stop it!
Is there any way to know what is the service cost and frequency for a spring drive please ?
Struggling to find out what model the first watch is? With the Seiko on stop.
A good video and accurately portrays things. I consider Lange, Seiko ahead of the rest with Casio leading from behind.
I did considered and I bought it. The level of detail perfectly reflects the honesty and commitment Seiko has with his customers. It is difficult to express better that this video the level that GS is offering in comparison with the big Swiss brands.
