She is so adorable lol! Paving her own unique path! I used to watch it with my grandma in the 80s but have no idea what's going on, even now lol. As a fellow Teochew, I wish little Sophie all the best and am so happy to see her carrying on this tradition!
Oh I love her advice to other kids, "Always follow what you want to do. if you have no interest you will never get ahead." Simply put, don't let your parents make you do what they want you to do, do what interests you! I feel like many kids need to hear this.
I love that. I fully believe in getting kids involved in different stuff at a young age, but darn it, let them choose what they want to stick with and pursue!!
In this child, I see so much maturity and drive that not many kids have these days! Shows what dedicating oneself to an art at such an early age does to one's character. She chose it from her heart and the parents have beautifully supported it. This is so wonderful! Love Teochew Opera! 加油 Sophie, 加油!

Wow! Amazingly talented child. Mastering English n Teochew languages and opera at the same time at such a young age. All the best in your learning and educational journey, Sophie.
A lot of people don’t realize English is commonly spoken in Singapore, it’s the Lingua Franca between different groups of Singaporeans! And I agree, she is so cool!
I know a lot of Singaporeans whose first/native language is English. They have an accent that makes you think they learned it as a second language, but it's actually their first language. She's probably been speaking English at home since she was first starting to speak.
Languages are easier to learn as a child as they have no hang ups like adults do, as you get older and then decide you want to learn another language that’s when your brain fights against it. Some people who already speak more than one language will find learning a 3r and 4th a lot easier than some one who in their 20’s with only one language who wants to learn a 2nd language. You need to think in the new language to speak it. I had a friend who spoke 6 languages as well as her family when she’s on the phone with them they rotated through 5 of them, all in the one convention, when I asked her why, she said that when describing something some languages lend them selves better to describing things. The one language they never used on the phone was English as they felt their conversation was private and most people around her at work only speak English. So if you want your children to speak more than one language start them as young as possible but make it fun for them. When something is fun they learn better. If they are board with it, it will never stick no matter how hard you try.
@@dawsie to add, it's harder to learn languages as an adult because there are some phonetics that are literally impossible to learn as an adult if you were not trained while you were a child. That's also the reason why Japanese speakers have a hard time pronouncing "L" because they don't have that phoneme in their language.
@lettus143 but that sounds like forcing them to go to the traditional route. Wouldn't it be better to expose them to traditional young and let them decide themselves? Maybe they dislike this type of thing?
oh my god! i'm teochew too and it made me so happy and nostalgic watching her perform!! i'm glad she wasn't forced into doing it and she truly enjoys teochew opera. teochew is slowly dying, and i'm so so proud of her learning the entire dialect to pursue a passion of hers 💓

So adorable and such an amazing girl! I listen to Teochew opera with my popo when young but learning the song or dance had never cross my mind. This girl is so brave to try something extraordinary. Continue to shine gorgeous!

Oh my goodness this is beautiful, it’s probably like a dream for her parents and grandparents and ancestors! I’ve been thinking of taking my daughter to traditional dance class in the area but it costs so much, we actually took her out of swimming class early because the weekly pay was killing us more financially than we thought. Anyways, this little girl is going places, the fact that she knew what she liked and dove into it is amazing!!!
Advice from a 9 year old!! Ha ha!!! Shame my mum didn't hear this when she always told us that we're wasting our time as we not good at anything, we're nobody and always will be a nobody! She'd threw my niece's paintings out of the window because painting makes mess! The only artwork we did was at school as we were to scared to do anything at home. I liked pottery but my mum would shout at me that I'm making mess in the garden, although I was accusing a small piece of wood. Next day my pot was chucked to dustbin. It was rammed into our heads that we're stupid. I'm so glad that such supportive parents exist!! Wonderful and determined little girl with so much wisdom. Wish you all the best, you're so talented!! ❤

Well yes and no Yes it's really good that she knows many languages at her age But it's easier for young kids to learn new languages than it is for adults, specially if the parents are bilingual and speak both languages to them since they were babies, my cousins had dominican parents but lived in the US and they could speak in both english and spanish as toddlers (of course, they still sounded as toddlers in both languages so it's not like they were making long complicated sentences at that age lol)
