I love this episode. My late grandma was an opera singer and I grew up learning opera songs from her. This reminds me of her and how I will never get to watch her opera nor hear her sing opera. And di nu hua was our go to song. Nick is right every canto knows this opera and song. I’ve never cried so much over a UA-cam video.
Wow i must say that i personally found this episode so so special! It really brought out what Xenia envisioned hired or fired to be about, to shine light into the dying local trades within Singapore and raise awareness within the younger demographics. I think this part of culture has really been hard to make resonance with the youth, especially when a lot of us don't even understand dialect. Thank you for the dedication placed into preserving and raising awareness of this art form!! Great job Xenia!!!!
This is hands-down one of the best hired or fired episode and indeed an eye opener to younger viewers about the dying culture/professions in Singapore. Really very amazed by how Xenia is able to handle that intense pressure and stress from learning all those in a day!
This is next level for Xenia and the whole of TSL crew. I am beyond inspired by the content and thoughtfulness of this series through and through. TSL has definitely upped their game with this ep. kudos!
Can we get the HOF team and Xenia try working in a funeral parlour company? I think this occupation is labeled as pang tang but I’m always curious on what goes behind the scenes of planning an entire funeral from start to finish.
Love this episode! Xenia and the team for using the platform to let more youngsters know about this trade, and Nick Shen for doing what he's doing with passion.
This episode was super refreshing to watch!! Can really feel the dedication from both of them!! Xenia's perseverance throughout the whole experience, and Nick's passion for the art is went super well together and it was so amazing how they touched the hearts of each other :")
This is an amazing episode! Really very encouraged to see the hard work and effort being put in! Special thanks to Xenia for having such an awesome attitude in learning the craft so quickly under the tutelage of Nick and the Teachers! Looking forward to more episodes of “Hired or Fired”. Cheers! :)
I was really amazed with this episode. Honestly this tradition is fading away nowadays. It's really great to watch such an interesting art. And Nick is really handsome! 😊 His voice is really warm and friendly
The respect and cultural sensitivity that you show is mad respect man. Amazing effort and dedication you show, hats off! Ps. I damn lazy to comment one, but this one Wah really
I interviewed an uncle performer, from Tok Tok Chiang troupe for my school photography essay, and stayed with the troupe the entire performance day. Before the show ended, the crowd only had 3 people. The uncle seemed to like me, at the end of the second day, the uncle told me his entire life story, and he told me it’ll be nice to have a granddaughter like me, so i told him he can consider me like a goddaughter. It’s a dying form of art, i didn’t care much about it but now, i gained a much better undetstanding of it! Xenia did such a good job, you can tell she isn’t there just for fun, can tell she’s definitely trying to learn
the best HOF episode ever?! let’s just acknowledge the effort that xenia put in to learn some basics of chinese opera in A DAY which idk how she did cuz it must be so tough to learn singing in dialect, moving the spear, body movements etc all while wearing a heavy and hot costume and headpiece. the passion she has for learning is really admirable and how she tries her best to learn about different jobs in HOF no matter how varied the tasks kudos to her for that!! 👏🏻 honestly i find chinese opera a very beautiful thing and love watching it despite not understanding a word because this art form is so charming in a way and i’m so happy xenia showed us some behind the scenes of how becoming a chinese opera singer came to be :D
This Chinese Opera episode was very touching seeing how nick consistent to put his effort on these work is not easy , he see it is how valuable to pass the Chinese culture. I’m was touching on Xenia’s attitude , this really set a very good model on work. I hope to see more hired and fired episode. The back up workers also 幸苦了。 加油
I don't know why but watching this made me tear up. Nick and Xenia are two beautiful people who are truly inspiring with their zest for living and dedication to the pursuit of their passion. Jiayou both!
Wah! I loved all of Xenia's episodes. But I have to say, I love this one best! So much effort both from Xenia and also to see such efforts to sustain this art form! I hope to even get to try this out someday!
I enjoy watching Xenia's humourous and hilarious personality in every episode. Look forward to every episode which TSL release every week.. You are doing a good job TSL.. Love all your series of shows..
To be honest, there's always going to be criticism in the online world. People are quick to judge because everyone is behind a computer screen and their comments rarely affect their life. People won't know the what goes through each of the episode, the feelings of the person involve (in this case Xenia), the hardship and the pain. Picking up something you've never done before in a day is already tough af. People need to learn to be kinder. Very nicely done TSL, Xenia, and of course Nick Shen. Loved Ti Tou Dao drama too.
Well I guess this episode has made me go down a rabbit hole... binge-watching the drama titoudao after watching this ep.... my two cents towards preserving this dying art form is that perhaps something could be done to lower the barriers to entry, especially for people who can’t understand dialect(myself included). Perhaps create more UA-cam content to explain the plots and place more subtitles? Perhaps incorporating more of such elements within Chinese dances in schools/ cultural appreciation day?
I'm Chinese and this makes me proud. People look down on Chinese opera because it's very different than the usual Western opera, but simply getting the voice right is extremely difficult. I can't do it, even if I wanted to 😅
What should we get her to try next? 🤔
You guys should ask her to be a lion dancer for a day
Funeral service
Sewer operator
Tailor
Perfumer?
Xenia's dedication to this episode though, having to learn something that isn't very common nowadays. kudos
Nick shen is just a legit human being. Commendable attitude since he stepped into media industry.
I love this episode. My late grandma was an opera singer and I grew up learning opera songs from her. This reminds me of her and how I will never get to watch her opera nor hear her sing opera.

By far the best episode of the series. Seeing Nick Shen once again on screen is a pure delight.
Seriously respect to Xenia for being so brave and open minded to try this, I would have felt so uncomfortable 😔
