    Dude u just made my day. I absolutely love this series. Grew up with it and watched from 94' till its end in 07/08. Champ car to me is the ultimate series and the 99/00 car was epic and Rivaled Formula one in the mid 90s. I Got to meet Jimmy Vasser Bobby Rahal and Mario Andretti. 1000+hp engines Multiple tire manufactures. Multiple Chassis manufactures .. Mercedes Honda Toyota and Ford all competing for top honors in an International racing field and Series. These cars were the absolute best. No traction control i believe untill the 2000s full on pure bred racing cars with sequential shift, methanol breathing- 2.65 TURBO V8s. One of the most beautiful race cars ever.
    Zanardi Vasser Unser Tracy Rahal Montoya Moreno PJ Jones Franchitti Andretti the Late Greg Moore (RIP) Micheal Andretti the list goes on of epic talent that fueled my young desire for Racing.
    Fuckin love this and wish more people understood how epic these cars were for the 90s

      In a world where F1 doesn't exist, maybe. It was considerably slower than F1 in 1999 and nowhere near as advanced, just had a lot of power. It wasn't as competitive either, considering in 1999 only Montoya really did anything special and outclassed other drivers with his talent. F1 always was and will be the pinnacle of any type of racing, but especially open wheel where there really isn't much competition to it at all.

    • @Synystr7
      @Synystr7 6 років тому +84

      What do you mean, dude? Are you kidding me? You seem to forget that F1 had traction control, grooved tires and Hakkinen won 98-99 then Schumi won 5 years in a row. HOW EXCITING.
      Do you know that the safety car was introduced to F1 because of the popularity of the pace car in the US? F1 was so scared about losing TV audience to CART/Indy in the early 90s after Mansell left. And just because the cars weren't "technically" as impressive, doesn't make the racing worse. Mid to late 90s CART was balls to wall, low grip, sliding, tail whipping out of corners, hand off the steering wheel to shift, 400 kph awesomeness. They had Merc, toyota, honda and ford engines. Reynard, swift, penske, and lola chassis, and drivers from all over the world.
      And the cars could follow eachother because a good 3/4s of the downforce came from ground effect with the massive tunnels in the floor.

      Synystr7 well, i don't think so, that was the best non F1 cars ever, but honestly, nothing can beat a Ferrari V12 or an F1 V10. It's so boring see cars racing in ovals, only the road races worth it, and were so much slower than any F1 of that years. Even a Minardi was faster. And that cars were reaching 19000 rpm, this thing only 13000-14000. And F1 had the best drivers, Hakkinen, Schumacher, Hill, Villenueve, Frentzen... CART had only Zanardi, Papis... Over Zanardi, the only one that was a good driver was Montoya if he raced there (i don't remember right now honestly). They tried to emulate F1, but they mostly failed. But surely was better than indycar today. CART is what we'll see if Ferrari and Mercedes are going to exit to F1 because of the 2021 rules and create a new series fighting F1

    Jimmy, you owe it to yourself to watch some full CART races from this era (easily found on YT). The cars really lent themselves to be raced amongst each other and the different chassis/engine/tyre combinations meant that a different car/driver would be competitive at every race. Add to that a calendar composed of races at road courses, street circuits, ovals and even an airport and you're set for some fantastic racing.

    Jimmer, a brief history of American open wheel racing, which I took an hour and a half out of my life to write just for you:
    American open wheel racing is actually probably the world's oldest motorsport series, with races taking place as far back as the mid 1900s. The very loosely controlled National Championship started around the same time as the Indianapolis 500-which was part of it-in 1911, and AAA started sanctioning it not too long later. Races were mainly contested on short and simple dirt ovals as well as street circuits. The sport stopped for a short time for World War 1 before returning and growing larger and faster in the 20s and 30s, much more so the former due to the Great Depression. It stopped again for WW2 from 1942-1945, and by then the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and many other tracks had fallen into terrible condition-but organizers and drivers(most notably Tony Hulman, a businessman who bought IMS and was named the track president) were able to restore them and run the 1946 championship successfully. A few years later, the "roadster" concept-which was a long, low-slung, and narrow body with more room for a bigger engine-was innovated, and shortly afterwards it became commonplace in the field.
    With Formula 1's inaugural season having the Indianapolis 500 as a points round and numerous chassis and engine manufacturers present in the series, everything went well...until 1956, when AAA had suddenly stopped sanctioning the series and left. However, USAC(United States Automobile Club) took over and added longer dirt and paved ovals to compensate for the cars' ever increasing speeds. F1 left Indianapolis after 1960, but it didn't harm the prestige of the race or the championship at all. In fact, it might have improved it, as alien Australian Jack Brabham entered only the second rear-engined car at Indy in 1961(the first being George Bailey in 1939, who retired early on that year). His finishing 9th of 33 starters encouraged the new rear engined formula, which also came with a lower, wider body and bigger tyres, to be tried in the National Championship not too long later. Lotus entered it in 1963 with the 29 chassis and Jim Clark as its star driver, and his results were steadily improving overtime. 1964, however, was marred by the massive second lap crash at Indianapolis which killed Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. The former, however, was driving a new American rear-engined Halibrand chassis, and he had gotten a great result at the season opening Trenton 100. This motivated Clark to not let the crash traumatize him, and he would go on to win the 1965 Indianapolis 500 in the 38(The season saw the first Road Course race since the end of WW2, the Hoosier Grand Prix at Indianapolis Raceway Park, about 40 minutes from the speedway).
    At this point, the rear-engined cars were proven to be faster outright and the majority of the field drove them in 1966-when triple crown winner Graham Hill completed the second of three legs. The last front engine roadster-driven by veteran Jim Hurtubise-qualified for Indianapolis and other races in 1968, a time when the most famous names of the sport shined through, like Rick Mears, Al Unser, AJ Foyt-who had 3 Indy wins and titles each to his name-and Mario Andretti. The latter would win the 1969 500 in a Brawner-Hawk chassis, the first car to have basic aerodynamic devices attached to it-half a front wing and a rear wing mounted over the axle. Aero became a common area for development in IndyCar at the same time it did in F1. It was highlighted when McLaren went into the series for the first time with its M15, which had full on front & rear wings. They had midfield results from the start and steadily improved until they got a win at Indianapolis in 1972 with Mark Donohue. As the series entered a peak period of popularity in the mid 70s, they got several more victories, including the 500 in '74 and '76, both with Johnny Rutherford.
    After a general decline, CART itself was formed in 1979 when the poor decisions of USAC came to light. Many drivers and teams went up against them and formed Championship Auto Racing Teams(CART, of course), and USAC responded by boycotting it. A legal battle which included entry amount controversy at Indianapolis that year took place, and CART got the better of it by being allowed to sanction the series besides Indianapolis which USAC still had control of-although it was still worth points. The car you're driving here, though, is considered a CART car because it ran in the CART World Championship Series IndyCar in 1999; to clear up that name confusion, there were two different premier open-wheel series thanks to a split after the 1995 CART season where Indianapolis Motor Speedway president Tony George hated the direction CART was going with less American drivers, teams, and races, so he created the Indy Racing League(IRL), an all American and all oval series which took the Indianapolis 500 and several more races and tracks with it. There were then two seperate series with IndyCar racing and both competed against each other throughout the late 90s and early 00s for fame and prestige. But after several terrible choices by CART event promotion and staging wise which cost it big teams like Andretti and Chip Ganassi, it filed for bankruptcy after the 2003 season. It was bought out by 3 team owners and renamed the Champ Car World Series, only to go bankrupt again after 2007. In the end, its assets were bought out and merged with the IRL-which was doing extremely well in comparison, having finally added road courses in 2005-but not before it hosted its final race, the 2008 Long Beach Grand Prix(which counted for points in that year's IRL championship). The newly merged series is now known as the NTT IndyCar Series(IZOD was the title sponsor from 2008-2013, and Verizon from '14-'18)today.
    Also, the car itself is a Swift 010.c chassis powered by the Ford XD engine, a 2.65L Twin Turbocharged V8. According to the mod label it was run by the Newman-Haas team-the same one that Mansell drove for in '93 and '94-in '99, but the same combination was run by Patrick Racing as well. Michael Andretti, Christian Fittipaldi, Roberto Moreno, PJ Jones, and Jan Magnussen all drove the car that season, and the former two took one win each.

      @UnsounderGnome 6 років тому +24

      Just wanted to add that the reason AAA stopped sanctioning the Indy 500 in 1956 was because of the disaster at Le Mans that year. It gave a lot of people a very negative perception of motorsport and since AAA's main function is promoting safe driving, they no longer wanted to associate with it.

    Thanks for that video, Jimmy. So many memories about those monster cars. You would think that a Champ Cars would do well against a F1 car back then based on the specs - but it would be like lambs to the slaughter. The primary reason being, that Champ Cars back then used steel brakes which in no way could compare to Hi Tech F1 brakes. Another major difference was acceleration.
    When Champ Cars finally started racing at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, the opportunity finally came to compare those two types of cars. And as expected there was no contest. An example was in 2002 where Juan Pablo Montoya set a pole time of 1:12.836. When Cristiano da Matta some weeks later set the pole time in a Champ Car it was 1:18.959 :-)
    And by the way, the cars were called Champ Cars - not CART. That was the name of the series (Championship Auto Racing Team) which was created when the big split happened in 1995/1996 which meant that there was two similar open wheel race series, CART and IndyCar. All the top drivers (Michael Andretti, Paul Tracy, Bobby Rahal, Al Unser Jr. etc.) and the top teams (Penske, Chip Ganassi, Walker Racing etc.) went to CART whereas IndyCar was like second rate - but (and that's a huge but), The Indy 500 was a part on the IndyCar series and that's basically how that series survived. Later on CART and IndyCar was again merged into one series - the present IndyCar series.
    Anyway, enough about ancient history and me jabbering on about the good ol' days :-) Thank you once again for that video, Jimmy!

      99 Champ cars were about 4-5 seconds per lap slower than 99 F1 cars on an average track. The fastest Champ cars would be nowhere near competitive to slowest F1 cars of the time. People don't really realize or appreciate how much more advanced F1 is than all other motor sports today and in the past.

      However, when it came to racing on the Super Speedways, that's when the speed of the Champ Cars really came to life due to low downforce and Turbo engines. In 1997 Mauricio Gugelmin set a new world speed record on a closed race circuit when he drove a lap around the 2-mile California Speedway with an average speed (!!!) of 240.942 mph (387.759 km/h).
      A F1 car would also be fast on a track like that, but how fast I don't think we'll ever know :-)

      Its two factors to why this champ car cldnt compete. Weight. Its about 300 to 400 kilos heavier. And built this way to be able to handle oval and super speedway forces and crashes. Also the tires even tho there was a tire war. The cars are signifigantly heavier so they cldnt be as soft as F1 cars. even tho champ cars had close to 1000hp. They cld not overcome the quickness of an F1 car because of this weight difference. And to those comparing the mid 2000s champ car pole in canada. Those cars were de-tuned versions of this car simply because of cost cutting also the best teams had already left champ car as well as the develpement of the chassis were no longer there also to cut cost. Its not a fair comparison. Take 300kilos off this car it wld do just fine vs an 99 f1 car. Even the drivers said this

    If you're looking at another real-life laptime to beat, Dario Franchitti set the Road America lap record in a 2000 CART Champ Car (basically the same as the 1999 cars) - a 1:39.866 in qualifying.
    Another one to target would be Mark Donohue's legendary record lap in the Porsche 917/30 at Road America - a 1:57.5. It was the first car to ever lap Road America in under 2 minutes, and the record lasted for over a decade.

  • @calvinstraveldreams

    I love this car and good work on the hotlap and tribute to Greg Moore, but a bit of constructive criticism if you don't mind. The default setup that VRC provided for this car SUCKS on Road America, Watkins Glen, Spa-Francorchamps, Nurburgring Nordschleife, etc. There is clearly WAY too much front wing angle in the default setup (it's at a level that only makes sense at places like Belle Isle and Sonoma), as well as an improperly set up suspension and differential, while for ovals the car is symmetrical, which is VERY bad for ovals (oval cars are set up with positive camber on the left, negative on the right, among other things). My recommendations: take wing out of the front first, and then the rear, and make the wings look like how they did (minimum-ish front wing angle, halfway-ish rear wing angle) in the 1999 CART race at Road America (perhaps even a bit less rear wing given that I am assuming cooler weather than in the actual race as the actual 1999 CART race weekend was held in VERY hot weather), and set up the suspension to improve stability (the car should be biased more towards understeer and thus require MORE aggressive steering inputs than 90s-2000s F1 cars). Also set up the gearing so that you are at 14800-14900 rpm (redline is at 15000 rpm) in 6th gear just before braking for Aremberg and at the end of Dottinger Hohe once you have the correct downforce.

    I got my first PC in 1999 and it came with a CART game. I think it was a Microsoft game, the Microsoft of the time, that is, so it had a zillion graphical settings to tinker with as a rudimentary "benchmark" for what your PC could handle. I remember setting the draw distance to Superman 64 levels and just trying to survive.

      Big Smoke
      I don't really see where you people live or how you can be so delusional, but in which way are other motorsports shooting themselves in the foot? F1 is bigger than ever, WRC is doing amazingly well, GT3 is great, Formula 2 is better than Formula 1 at moments, Formula E is on the rise, etc. And no, I know you're being a typical american patriot, but american open wheel racing was never the best in the world, neither in terms of driver talent, competition or especially engineering.

    • @nickb2049
      @nickb2049 6 років тому +2

      it was definitely better in competition before the split. and it depends on what you are looking for in engineering, are you talking advanced technology or are you talking making stupid fast race cars for less, because CART teams were good at making cars go very very fast. and I'd argue now that the competition in IndyCar today blows F1 out of the water.

    • @reder388
      @reder388 6 років тому +2

      derbigpr500 Yea Indycar will never be as big as F1 or even Nascar. But F1 going with the halo while Indycar is taking its time and making an aero screen. And Formula E has the fan boost while indycar has the p2p on road courses is an example of how Indycar is making good decitions and slowly but steadily making progress and gaining fans. People see it as the poor mans F1 but it is entirely different and is putting the spotlight on the drivers and not gimmics or money.

    Racing the 1999 CART is quite an experience. It's incredibly delicate, and you have to be careful and respectful of the car's power (especially at high boost,) yet you also have to push it at the same time to get the most out of it and stay competitive.
