    For people who don’t know: 1999 was the nadir of Roger Penske’s organization in open-wheel racing. Under Mercedes-Benz management, the bulk of Ilmor’s resources were going toward the Formula 1 program with McLaren, and their CART engine was falling behind in development. Meanwhile, Penske’s chassis program was getting progressively worse, to the point where the team gave up on their own cars in mid-season in favor of buying some Lolas. Keep in mind that Lola was in such financial trouble after their failed attempt at F1 in 1997 that Carl Haas, who controlled Lola’s distribution business, refused to field their cars for his own team.
    Penske spent most of the year fielding only one car for Al Unser Jr., whose descent into alcoholism was becoming apparent by then. At Laguna Seca, they entered a second car for Gonzalo Rodriguez, who was killed in a crash caused by a stuck throttle at the Corkscrew. It was already announced that Penske would field Reynard-Hondas for Gil de Ferran and Greg Moore in 2000; then Moore, too, was killed at the season finale in Fontana.

    • @GPLaps

      @fishflake1209 3 роки тому +17

      @@GPLaps Not even a couple of years: de Ferran won the CART championship the very next season, but that might not be the most remarkable part of the turnaround.
      Lola was as good as dead in 1998: they had one customer in CART (who was at the back of the grid every race) and no money to put into chassis development. With the infusion of cash and technical support from Penske (who had just managed to design a car that was completely undriveable, mind you), Lola was back to building race-winning chassis in 2000...and Penske didn’t even race Lolas in 2000.
      What happened at Penske in the late ‘90s is completely inexplicable, and I still haven’t seen an account of those couple of years that gets to the heart of it.

    Its honestly amazing the impact that Greg Moore had on people. It speaks volumes to his legacy that even so many years after his passing the mere sight of that forsythe Indycar gets fans of a certain age waxing nostalgic. Maybe it was the red gloves, or the fact that the commentary team kept pushing him as a young future champion, or even just that he wore glasses like me, but he was 10 year old me's favorite driver. I learned a hard lesson that year, but I definitely still remember Greg Moore, and im glad that seemingly so many others do to.

      He was young, marketable and full to the brim with talent on ovals and road courses... A lot of people saw him going to F1 including Penske, who signed him up for the next season. Sadly he never got the chance to show what he could do in the very best of equipment. Not that the Player's team didn't have some top notch stuff of their own....

      I think the last couple of seasons in CART, with the changes that they made to the car, both aero and push to pass button, made for some of the best open wheel racing on the planet. It didn't have the history, culture, and famous road circuits of F1, but it had made changes to facilitate more passes in the braking zone, which ironically F1 adapted years later. I loved CART and like many, mourned its merger with IRL, even though I understood the economics.

    All you need is the ABC crew getting excited over that duel. I can hear Parker Johnstone explaining aero push already and Paul Page going whoa. Good times and yes, they did have spotters from 95 onwards, but was explained in the 95 New Hampshire broadcast at that time, they weren't like NASCAR spoters. By 2000 they were more like NASCAR spotters in that they would tel drivers if they were clear or if there was a car down there. In 99/200 ABC had a delay on the radio broadcasts (thanks JPM in part?) which led to the imortal quote of:
    Due to the...eloquence of the CART drivers.
    Read: JPM's at it again guys, gotta put adelay on this.

    • @jacekatalakis8316
      @jacekatalakis8316 3 роки тому

      @@armorgeddon Not really, the series and networks had to in order to comply with FCC regulations so they could avoid getting ABC/ESPN slapped with fines for what the FCC thought at the time ws obscenities. CART's hands were tied on that front, but scanners were very, very much uncensored. And doing some research, CART wasn't the only series that had a delay for that reason too, so it's not like CART were the sole ones at it. ABC were very much into the habit of playing the radio transmissions during the races, think back to 1995 when, IIRC, it was brand new to open the radio channels and put the driver/team chatter on the air. Even F1 delays the radio traffic as of now, and I'll absolutely agree that F1's made infinitely more mistakes than CART ever did, both within and after the same timeframe

    • @armorgeddon
      @armorgeddon 3 роки тому

      @@jacekatalakis8316 Ah yes, I heard about such rules in US TV, but to my knowledge those didn't apply to subscription cable networks which I thought CART was shown on. The mistake count battle between F1 and CART would be very close for sure, but F1 was in a much stronger position to survive all the mistakes and it still does today despite an even more incapable management running it now.

      I would be interested as well please. I also bought their 1998 carset before I knew about their dubious reputation. :( It would be cool to have more proper physics applied to that carset as well. It currently seems like an improper CART Factor rF1 conversion.

    Superb video, I remember staying up in the UK and listening to these races on the radio, finding whatever footage I could; I didn't realise how well AC could do it.
    By the way, check out the Crew Chief app for all your spotter needs, it's a must have with anything that should have radio contact with the pits

      It was on TV on channel 5 when it first launched after the soft core porn they used to show around 10 o clock at night. Ahh red shoe diaries. The time when a 5th channel on TV seemed revolutionary despite it being crap. I remember they used to show all sorts of American sports, ice hockey, American football, motorsports, major league soccer, South American football. Obviously they only showed it cos no one else wanted it and it was what they could get to fill the air time but I enjoyed watching alot of that stuff having never had access to any of it before. It was novel lol

    You absolutely nailed it.... modern day racing sims have been ignoring open-wheel oval racing. Some of the oldest and fondest memories are of oval racing in Indycar Racing 2.

    I also have this mod and the oval tracks for Assetto Corsa. I enjoy doing similar races on many of the Ovals and Road/Street tracks Indycar raced trhoughout the past years.
    Only thing I wish AC 1 game had is rolling starts. Too bad, would of made it a better game.
    I do have the same thing for RFactor 2, and it does have rolling starts.
    Thanks for the video. take care.

    Hi, another awesome vid!
    But I got a question for you in a point I need help as you use refuel in AC.
    I'm doing offline races from vintage era, last year did all the 1970 World Sports Championship with half distance but I'm getting a annoying problem.
    The AI pit for fuel and change tires, but the time they spend is the same from the changing tires, and not the correct time for refuel.
    As an example the Porsche 917k takes approximately 60 seconds to fill the tank with 120L, the time to change tires is 20 seconds. When I pit my time is exactly the time to refuel (60s), but AI takes 20s. When watching onboard with racing essentials app active I can see that when the AI touches the pit stall the got instantaneous refuel, it goes from nothing to full automatically.
    I've searched a lot about AI in Assetto Corsa, but didn't find nothing related with the refuel time being wrong, or that the refuel being made automatically and doesn't respect the time set in the ai.ini.
    Have you got this issue either? Does you know how to troubleshoot or a workaround?
    It would be greatly appreciated! 😞

    I was at the 98' Michigan was where sadly 3 spectators lost their lives. Thankfully I was sitting in Turn 1-2. Gregg Moore got his 1st win. The speed & sound those cars made was absolutely awesome. Racing, in general, of today as lost its luster. I don't follow nascar, f1 nor indycars anymore tho I religiously followed them all in the 90's & 00's but they aren't the same minus my shock & awe while watching the 1st 10 laps of Vegas in 2011 before the race was cancelled due to losing Wheldon but if racing was like that, I'd tune in every single week but everyone is a pussy in todays age & why I only watch sprint car racing. The big 3 pavement series are dead to me until they change something

    Man, this is good stuff!
    I'd be very curious to see what these cars could do at Pocono.
    And there are some of the newer street circuits these didn't get to run on where I think they could put on quite a show as well, such as Las Vegas (2007) and Sao Paulo (2010-13).
    And while some might want to hang me as a heretic for this one, I think the 2006-07 iteration of the San Jose street circuit was pretty good. They'd gotten the kinks sorted out from 2005, and it was a simple, quick course with a few decent overtaking opportunities around its fairly short lap.
