First footage shows gas leaks in Nord Stream 1 and 2, as 200m circle of gas escapes pipes

- Norwegian Armed forces have released the first footage of gas leaks within Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The footage was taken from a helicopter over the rupture in the pipe.
The Norwegian Armed forces released this statement with the footage:
"After the three gas leaks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines have occurred in the Baltic Sea, exclusion zones have been established around the leaks for the sake of the safety of ship and air traffic.
Nord Stream 1 has two leaks northeast of Bornholm, Nord Stream 2 has one leak south of Dueodde. The leaks were discovered by the Norwegian Armed Forces' F-16 interceptor response unit.
The defence is supporting in connection with the authorities' efforts regarding the leaks on the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The frigate Absalon and the environmental ship Gunnar Thorson are on their way to carry out water monitoring at the exclusion zones, and the Norwegian Defense Forces are also supporting with a helicopter capacity. In addition, the patrol ship Rota was in the area last night.
The Defence has no further comments."

I worked on the survey of those pipelines, if I was going to do something nefarious to them I'd do it around the island of Bornholm where WW2 munitions such as a lot of mustard gas was dumped as it would cause a bigger headache to fix it. Oddly enough this happened right near the island of Bornholm...
Sorry but as a novice here I don't understand it. Are the pipelines not "turned off" at the Russian end (the source point). If so wouldn't the amount of gas leaking be none existant or minimised to what was left in it at the point at which it was turned off?
@@outofthetrash5925 I'm not an expert on how they operate the pipeline but from what I read they still had around 105 bar of pressure in the pipeline which went down to 7 bar overnight, so they will probably leak for a while, but I'm not sure what while is, could be hours, could be days.

It is actually 3 different leaks.
1 in each of the pipelines at close proximity to each other, north to Bornholm.
A third is south-east to Bornholm.
Both Swedish and Danish earthquake detectors have sensed serious explosions from the areas.
Both pipelines are in-active with no gas flowing, but a substantial amount of gas is still contained in the lines, to keep up the pressure.
Causes are unknown, but authorities have aired theories of sabotage.
Looks like a missile.

The Swedish seismic centre reported that powerful underwater explosions were registered in the area of gas leaks from the "Northern Streams". Surprisingly a new baltic pipeline from Norway which was officially opened today remained untouched.

So, the pipeline will have to be shut down, then seawater will fill it. Is there a strategy for this situation and how difficult is it to repair and get back online? How long to do that?

According to AG NordStream (the company running the NS project) it may take years from now to fix this leaks because of the massive damage. Both NS-1 and NS-2 pipelines will be unoperable until then. Sabotage there is no doubt

September 4th 2022, German businessman, Karl Peter Griesemann’s private jet crashed into the Baltic Sea off the coast of Latvia, having flown halfway across Europe from Spain whilst unresponsive to ATC calls.
Flight tracking data showed that the Austrian registered Cessna 551 departed from southern Spain on Sunday afternoon, changed course at Paris and Cologne and then flew straight out to the Baltic Sea, before descending rapidly into the ocean killing all on board.

Whoever sabotaged the pipe, Baden will definitely get the blame for this. He bragged to put a break in the Nord Stream 2 a few months ago which I think is skeptical whether his men could get near to any of these gas supplies.

I didn't think that those two pipelines followed the same route along the seabed, so I'd be surprised if they both failed in the same incident. Perhaps an anchor strike from a large ship, which hooked the Nordstream 1 pipe, dragged it and buckled it till it failed? A buckle of one pipe would explain having two jets of gas from the leak, because of the shape of the hole which it would make.

Germany. According to contract Germany has to pay for the gas untill 2030 no matter if they pump the gas or not. Pump or Pay it is. No doubt whole Europe will fell the consequenses of this accident due to major gas and oil prices will rise significantly. USA is the only benefactor in this situation, Europe has no choice but to purchase condensed gas from US for high prices

No they couldn't. This type of action is specifically used to deflect blame from themselves. If they shut off the gas, they would be at fault for doing it, and responsibility for shutting off the pipeline would be on them 100%. However, if some "mysterious accident" happened to the pipelines, it would absove them of any responsibility, and while everyone knows it was them, they could still just deflect blame and get away with it, for less consequences than if they just shut off the gas. It's basic logic. I would have done the same thing if I was them. I wouldn't be stupid enough to simply shut off the gas: I would make it impossible for anyone to 100% put the blame on me, while still achieving the same goal, just without the nasty consequences of history judging me.

2). Russia owns the pipes
3). Cutting trade leads to war, which Russia hasnt wanted
4). The pipe couldve been damaged anywhere to stop flows. Russia most likely wouldve hit in ukraine to blame them, had they wanted this.

@@xD-ui5mt they will have to close the pipe.. and then drain all the gas out before any kind of underwater welding can be done . that will take weeks, and by then winter already around the corner and gas consumption will definitely be hit harder than if this happens during summer

They are probably working on isolating the damaged sections, who knows how and what that means, if it's at all possible to do it close to the damaged parts and if seawater would damage large parts of the pipes.

This benefits the Russian the most.
1. It's cheaper and easier to pump out the gas in the sea than burn it in Russia.
2. This creates even more turbulence to the west.
3. Short sighted analysis might even conclude this is a Ukrainian act, which is ridiculous. Ukraine needs the western support to any cost.
4. This is a typical Putin way to play the gas-card without publicly playing it. He knows the consequences by playing the gas-card without any real effects of the western resistance, that would be a huge setback in the russian domestic rhetoric.
