Nord Stream pipeline leaks raise suspicions of sabotage | DW News

- Danish and Swedish officials on Tuesday said two leaks had been identified on the Nord Stream 1 Russia-Europe gas pipeline in the Baltic Sea. The news came only hours after a similar development on its twin pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Both conduits have become flash points in the escalating energy war that has sent gas prices rocketing since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
What do we know so far?
Officials said a pressure drop was detected in the Nord Stream 1 undersea gas channel soon after a similar fall was detected in its sister pipeline, Nord Stream 2. Both of Nord Stream 1's two lines are affected, while one of Nord Stream 2's pipelines showed a drop in pressure. Marine authorities identified a gas leak southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm as the likely cause of the issue affecting Nord Stream 2. Danish officials warned of a threat to shipping in the area and asked vessels to steer clear. Swedish authorities on Tuesday said there were two leaks on Nord Stream 1 - one in the Danish maritime economic zone and the other in the Swedish one. The two leaks were reported to be very close to one another. The German economy ministry said it was investigating the incident. "We currently do not know the reason for the drop in pressure," it said.
Blasts registered by Swedish seismologists
Seismologists from Sweden's National Seismology Centre (SNSN) told public broadcaster SVT that powerful blasts had been registered in the areas of the gas leaks on Monday. "There is no doubt that these were explosions," SNSN seismologist Bjorn Lund told SVT. Denmark's armed forces meanwhile released footage showing bubbles on the surface of the Baltic Sea above the Nordstream 1 and 2 pipelines and reported that the largest of the leaks had caused surface disturbance of around 1 kilometer (0.62 miles) in diameter.
What's the significance?
Both of the pipelines were built to carry natural gas from Russia to Europe, although the Nord Stream 2 pipeline was never activated. German officials have not yet provided any information on the possible cause of the damage. However, Berlin's Tagesspiegel newspaper cited German security circles saying that sabotage was strongly suspected. "Our imagination no longer allows for a scenario in which this is not a targeted attack," the newspaper quoted its source as saying. Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said it was "hard to imagine" that the leaks were "accidental."
Speaking to Danish media while on a visit to Poland, Frederiksen said: "It's an unusual situation, to have three leaks a distance from each other. That's why it's hard to imagine that it's accidental." Ukraine blamed the leaks on Moscow.

I'm not so sure about any of those conclusions. Russia may want to cut it but have it appear it was nothing to do with them. @UC5ltu_YFP1gyAzQzWxKK4vw Seems logical in some respects. Gas moves at fairly high volume at low pressure and if a sudden high pressure event happens on or near the pipe like an explosion its logical to assume there would be check valves in numerous spots along the path of a pipeline that would open to protect the rest of the pipeline downstream. The leak kinda proves there was gas in the line unless its just air. There are interesting historical facts:
In 1983, the United States, under the auspices of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), began carrying out maritime terrorist attacks against Nicaragua.
“On October 11, 1983, a number of oil storage facilities were blown up in the port of Corinto. On October 14 of the same year, the group blew up an underwater pipeline in the port of Puerto Sandino. The following year, the sea waters of this free country were mined, as a result of which a number of ships were blown up by mines. However, the whole story surfaced in the press, an international scandal erupted, after which the operation was curtailed.

It is right on the day of opening gas pipeline between norway and poland, there is no councidence there
So, who is your choice of saboteur - Norway or Poland?
Nope, Russians know that Europe will never again want gas from them in the future and these pipelines were already stopped by Russians. So Russians sabotaged their own pipelines to send a message "mafia style" that they have the capability to destroy other pipelines from Norway to Europe in this critical winter. Trumps speech at the UN warning Germany about Russian Gas seems pretty sage now, doesn't it.
Yes he was right as usual
If this was Russia Id be interested as to what their motivation was. It makes it harder to get gas sails to Europe going again and that is ultimately what they would want. They are hoping that Europe caves in and says we want the gas and will drop sanctions. Now there is an extra barrier to that happening from Russias point of view. I wonder if it is more likely that this was done by a party wanting to make sure that Europe cant cave in and start buying gas from Russia again. Thoughts anyone?
(1) Sowing distrust,
(2) Causing an increase in gas prices,
(3) Providing a cover for possible attacks on other (non Russian) pipelines.

Here's my 2 cents:
Many people claim that Russia sabotaged the pipeline, but that makes little sense because Russia mainly benefits from an intact pipeline.
Russia already controls the gas flow, if they want to cut Europe off they can just simply close the valve.
And that's why I think the West has something to do with this.....
Europe's gas supply from Russia is already stretched thin and now the days are slowly getting colder, the demand for gas will increase up to a point that shortages may even cause uprisings through Europe this winter.
With the broken pipelines, Russia has no means to increase the gas supply to Europe and ease the situation, thus Russia has its position at the negotiation table severely weakened because they can not pressure European governments into making concessions to have the gas supply restored.
Europe now knows where it stands: there will be a limited supply of gas this winter, but Russia has lost its leverage and even if there will be uprisings about the gas supply/prices, governments can now simply explain that the supply line is damaged instead of being pressured into negotiating with Russia.
Time will tell if this was a smart move, but the Rubicon has been crossed now.... -"Alea iacta est"
Good analysis. I wouldn't be surprised that the one who did it was not even some European nation but the US...
This is your brain on "America Bad".
European countries could have repurposed the whole pipe network by decoupling it from Russia, and installing pumps to change the flow direction. It feasibly could have allowed countries with LNG facilities to pump re-gassified LNG to other countries, without the recipient countries needing to invest in facilities or pressure tankers of thier own.
To me, this smells like the petty b**ch nature of Russia saying "If I can't get what I want, neither can you!".
Agreed, Russia is the player with by far the weakest motive mostly as both Nordstreams provide a simple yet great leverage to mobilize ppl speaking up in favour of negotiations. The players with the greatest interest to have Nordstream damaged are the US, the UK and finally Ukraine or even Poland...those always raged against the fact that the line runs directly from Russia to Germany circumventing the continent.
So the West sabotaged the pipelines so that the West would go cold and experience protests and instability, and could not offer Russia reopened access to European markets as a bargaining chip in future peace talks. I don't follow
My read is that this is them saying “we can do it to the new one between Norway and Poland” - which has just opened…
A lot of skeptics thought that Germany would not tolerate closing down industry this winter due to lack of energy and therefore it would work towards some sort of settlement by Autumn.
That just got taken off the table. Question is by who?
Nope, Russians know that Europe will never again want gas from them in the future and these pipelines were already stopped by Russians. So Russians sabotaged their own pipelines to send a message "mafia style" that they have the capability to destroy other pipelines from Norway to Europe in this critical winter. Which would be an act of war technically, but they are already playing the "Russian roulette" here.
UK or USA
yea see, this is where your asessment fails: there are a bunch of other pipelines, and both NS1+2 where not in operation.
Like some comments say who has capability to do this so deep within EU territory? So either NATO is useless and cant detect Russia or NATO itself who do it.
Is that rhetorical question?
The word Sabotage is from the act of throwing ones wooden shoe called a sabo into the machinery.
Therefor it jad to be the dutch.
1 or 2 leaks could be written off as a natural burst, dozens of leaks could be written off as a massive structural failure of the pipes, but 3 leaks is suspicious as humans tend to operate on rules of 3.
Edit: recently learned that these pipes are encased in concrete and Norway registered a 2.2 seismic burst on the Richter scale around the time of the pipe failure.
If Russian gas was shut off then the pressure in the pipe would not have increased but rather decreased, if what was left in the pipes was being siphoned the closest thing that would have happened was an implosion but that wouldn't have left 3 holes.
👈👈👈 U.S.A 👉👉👉
Think about the cold and the forces the pipe is under with water and being underwater. A microfracture in the pipe structure can spread fast and cause multiple leaks.
1 or 2 leaks make more leaks once things Crack under water and pressure..I have no doubt faulty maintenance..but it's so easy point the blame on the us government...but not those Canadian or American businesses that own the gas and oil companies right
Ukraine demanded the shutdown of NS1...
USA illegally sanctioned Swiss companies building NS2...

Did not Brandon say that he would do this and now you guys want to act dumb?
Its easy to fix , is it fixed already?
On September 21, forces led by the U.S. Navy Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Kisatch Mountain (USS Kearsarge LHD 3) updated the AIS position in the Baltic Sea and then voluntarily shut down the position, when it was 30 kilometers away from the leak point of Nord Stream 1 and 50 kilometers away from the leak point of Nord Stream 2. A U.S. Navy MH-60R Seahawk anti-submarine helicopter left its flight traces on the ADB-S, also near the leak point, after all, it is not easy for an amphibious assault group to send frogmen into the water to install point bombs on pipelines, and the United States is one of the largest exporters of natural gas in the world. An LNG ship is loaded in the United States for $60 million and then sold to Europe for $240 million, so it's clear who bombed it.
As a pipe fitter, all pipe’s should be pressure tested prior to submitting the media into the pipeline. So this pipe has been sitting at the bottom since 2021 February (or longer)with out leaking.. so take it with a grain of salt and put 2+2 together and figure out where this is going..
