Why would you even attempt to rank something this beautiful with the average, disposable aural clutter at the "top of the charts"? Those songs exist, cosmically speaking, in the hopes that one day Haley Reinhart will cover them.
Her song Free from a few years ago is really good. Remember, she was on Idol back in 2011 (with Casey Abrams who will also appear on here occasionally).
She got third in American idol because... well you can’t auto tune something that doesn’t need it. Type of singing that’s dying out, and so sad that it is because there’s so much heart and soul... please keep going!
Singing, music, is not about competition, despite the many competitive shows. If there are two or three outstanding musicians, there are two or three outstanding musicians, why do people have to say who wins, who is best! It isn’t a running race. So you like one more than another. Who should win a painting competition, Rembrandt or Monet? Obviously, it is nonsense. 🇦🇺
@@katehobbs2008 true, but if you can sing, why use auto tune? It’s just sad that the looks computer gains the capital. She has the looks and the talent. That was my point. However, you’re not wrong. Seriously, good point though
Blame the rise of Autotune and Melodyne on MTV. All MTV turned into was a fashion show and an outlet for people who thought they were talented, but in reality weren’t. Don’t believe me? Watch the best thing MTV ever did and hear for yourself. The Unplugged show was truly awesome and would give viewers the chance to learn which bands had chops and who were nothing more than over promoted mediocre to pure crap. Pearl Jam was one of the good ones. Better yet were Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Aerosmith. One of the worst of the top MTV a bands was Ratt. They could barely play and the singer flat out sucked. The only stand out was Warren DeMartini who was an excellent guitarist. Since I’m old now and had to play covers of those mostly simple structured 1990s era songs. I remind all the young ones who may read this that bands like The Beatles ALL played at the same time, in the same room, and did 20-40 takes per song and the producer chose the best one prior to the invention of multi track recording. One of the best albums ever recorded was done in 1967 on two tape decks synced together with tons of overdubbing, track bouncing, track cutting and splicing. All under the watchful eye of the great Sir George Martin from the BBC. He didn’t even want the job as he was already head of the classical department there back in 1962. Although Paul McCartney wrote for the Bind movie theme. It was Paul who contacted Mr. Martin to work with him back in 1976 on this composition. Martin even share writing credits on this song as he was the one who wrote and arranged all the orchestra parts as well. By this time 24-track recording machines existed and they tied two of those together to have enough tracks. Same thing Queen did around the same time to capture their amazing layers of vocals as well as instruments. I can only hope with all the computerization of music today, bands like the one here will still continue to exist to demonstrate what truly skilled performers, arrangers, recordist, and video editors can do when given the chance.
@@ra3016 lol. even this is pitch-corrected with auto-tune. The robotic auto-tune you hear a lot isn't because those singers can't sing. Even rebecca black could actually sing. Music elitism is so funny in how ironically uneducated it often is.
I love the way she belts out "Black Hole Sun, Black Hole Sun, Black Hole Sun" toward the end of the song...she nails it, and she seems to nail it almost effortlessly...just a stroll in the park. Amazing voice, and hats off to the accompaniment...top notch.

This video was posted 7 years ago. Is it OK that I’m still listening and making comments? I have loved this lady since American Idol and was so disappointed she didn’t win. She’s much better off because PMJ is the perfect vehicle for her skills. ❤ to all the musicians!
Chris Cornell has on occasion referred to the duality of the song. "I liken it to Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, where there's a happy veneer over something dark. It's not something I can do on purpose but occasionally it will happen by accident."
I think this is what Grunge meant to show. Throwing it at the happy mainstream cheeriness, and giving a "voice" to the darker but oh so real sides off life, embrace it and not be afraid to accept these feelings in oneself.
@@johnpomeroy6931 Which is more impressive, an artist that can take 20 different songs and make them sound good in their own style or an artist that can take 20 different songs and sing them well in their original styles? I'm of the opinion that they are both equally impressive and there is a place for both in the world. When I go and see a cover band the only thing I care about is the songs sounding good.
I want to push all of those buttons and make it sing out!... err uhm on the trumfulclariphone thing or whatever you call it. That's probably weird enough. I'm going to edit the trombone slide part out.
I could listen to Hailey singing row row row your boat and be completely happy in my life, she is a much needed joyful voice in this oh so dark world we live in
I’m actually happy Haley didn’t win American Idol. She has tons more freedom to create content for us without the cigar chomping exec getting in her way. Super talented, super creative, and super beautiful is a wonderful winning formula.
Well, there's also the odd fact that a lot of times, the people who come in 2nd or 3rd do better than the winners, which has been going on since Star Search.
@@pfoster1666 That is 100% a thing. The winners pump out a ready-made album and fade into obscurity. Second or third places in those trashy 'contests' inevitably get snapped up by, like, real record labels, looking for talent.
I was an incredibly massive Chris Cornell fan and with that, a Soundgarden fan since 1988. I learned guitar and started singing with Chris as an inspiration. His vocal range and sound was a rare gift. It means so much to me to hear this respectable and fresh cover of Chris's work. You did a phenomenal job everyone 😊 I Love this cover. Hailey, your vocals are gorgeous. Ladies and gents, you play so beautifully. Great job 👍 I'm scared of covers ruining the original and disrespecting the artists who composed the original. This is her eighth recording with PMJ. Just a couple more and Scott will be able to release A Best of Haley Reinhart With PMJ album. Indeed, I'm looking forward to it.
For real, all music can be appreciated and respected, though I definitely agree the old styles should be appreciated and listened too still. Just because new music exists doesn't mean the old should fade, and just because you like old music doesn't mean new music is trash. With the 20's coming back around in a month, how about we bring back jazz for this century too!!!
@@beefonweckeastside3323 Just because You don't like today's music doesn't mean it's bad. People are likely more drawn to music made in their era because it has more relatability with things they experience, or maybe they just like it. People have different tastes and yours is not the only one, so please stop! :)
Absolutely brilliant. Haley's voice never ceases to amaze me. The scat singing, her incredible range and composition. Scott Bradlee, you have always been such an inspiration to me. You've absolutely done it again. Brilliant work to all. Really loving the orchestral vibes in this vintage interpretation. Top hats off to all.
I had the chance to see PMJ perform live at Sunfest music festival in West Palm this year. Scott, you told me that it's never too late to get back into music. I've thought about your words every day since then! Continue kicking ass! Sincerely, one of the (if not THE) biggest PMJ fans in the world, alive or dead.
@@DBGalkin A good suggestion. I'd forgotten he existed, and when I was aware of him in th e60's I loathed Diana so much that I never listened to him any more. However, he's a very much changed singer since that age ago, and his version is very good, the next best cover to Haley's for me.
There is a entire production team yes, and they all contribute to the end product. Just face it, Haley and her intuition just lifts each note to a different level. I will never get enough of Haley's voice and her approach to music.❤😊
Miss Reinhart is a classic voice that is hard to come by. I am a 90's kid, I think this song very much needed to be done in this way and she is just the one to do it. ;)
as a person that loves rock music and loves singing jazz... holy fuck, i cant believe what she does with her covers -- these are incredible. i've discovered these WAY too late. thank you extra gum haha.
Whenever I'm down this has been my go to song for a pick me up; put some headphones in, close my eyes, and let the siren's song take me away. Thanks for the past 5+ years of relief, you all truly deserve much more recognition.
Between this and her "Creep" cover, she has become my favorite whisper-to-a-scream singer, and one hell of a song stylist. Brava, Miss Reinhart, brava! P.S. I especially love her exquisitely timed hand gesture at 3:50. Nice touch. She isn't just a helluva singer, she's a helluva performer.
I'm not one of these people but a lot of people can't get over the bubbly interpretation of an otherwise darker song. Even if that's true, she just does it so well, who cares?
Maybe people who don't care for the warbling ostentatious style of singing. I didn't downvote, but I can understand those who might based on the actually quality disparity between this sweet song bird vs. the subdued yet powerful original. A stripped-down, bluesy version would fit the lyrics better. This simply reeks of *novelty*. Not a serious interpretation.
In my eyes Indisposed In disguises no one knows Hides the face Lies the snake And the sun in my disgrace Boiling heat Summer stench Neath the black, the sky looks dead Call my name Through the cream And I'll hear you scream again Black hole sun Won't you come And wash away the rain? When a song is born masterpiece, it can also be arranged differently from the original and will always be wonderful. And this girl with a beautiful and powerful voice, with this fantastic arrangement, gives me confirmation. Huge Soundgarden .. Excellent Haley Reinhart!
@@infinite_ammo ehh. Morgan's darker tone begins to grade on my ears after a while. I could see the same argument being made for Haley's raspy voice but coming from a blues back ground I love it.
@@infinite_ammo I've huge respect for both singers but I prefer Haley. Much Soul music diverged a lot from Blues. Morgan is very much into Soul, and a lot of her embellishments and turns of phrase show this, and are not at all Bluesy. Haley is much more Bluesy in this respect (apart from the tonal qualities of her voice). There is also very often a Jazz vibe in her singing, and she frequently sings Jazz. There is also that huge range of tonal colours Haley shifts between with such ease. Morgan, on the other hand, has probably even more power and a higher range than Haley who is a pretty powerful singer with a far better than average range. With her years of classical training Morgan also had superb breath control.
Having a variety of singers at their disposal and knowing how to use them is what makes PMJ so great. I love listening to my faves yet I also love being exposed to new faces and new talent I otherwise may have never found. 🙂
befingered - I didn’t notice for a long time that virtually every PMJ video is like this. 1 continuous take from a single camera. It makes Haley’s performance even more amazing. Betty Boop down to hands and eyes for the first 3 minutes and then she goes for more. I love it!

Haley is a truely truely amazing singer. Not only raw talent, but she always knows where to place the specific inflexions and techniques to accentuate the emotion in the melody the best way possible. Congratulations miss, you have achieved something really beautiful and special
Idol had to try to get on the country market. The Voice had just started and was tapping into country. They did not want Haley to win you could tell by the negatives from JLo and Randy nearly every week when reviewing Haley. The only one of the three judges that knew anything about how much talent she had and didn't care what the producers said was Steven Tyler.
This is like Mae West meets Marilyn Monroe(happy birthday Mr. President)all wrapped like Jessica Rabbit, I can't believe this beauty doesn't control the world yet... Haley WOW!!!
her voice honestly makes me giddy it's so intimate and emotive yet so precise and effortless...words fail me. and paired with the band that makes this cover so perfect by not taking anything away from the original song and adding their own subtle adaptations. Holy Macaroni with extra jalepenossss

Haley Reinhart is one of the captivating vocalists alive. You can just here that proud-to-be-sexy nuance in every word. And when she belts. Damn!!! You go girl :)
She is damn good, and half the reason I come back around here. The other half is Morgan James. Check out her recent Dream On rendition. It's simply amazing. (And Puddles is really good, too)
This is a wonderful channel. Not just because of the songs, but because it enables musicians and performers to be seen by millions without some scummy TV show or media machine abusing them for ratings or manufactured drama. It really puts the music first.
I NEED A NEW PMJ COVER WITH HALEY. I just seriously NEED it. It's been more than a year since she sang this, I need new content. She's like so great and she makes every other singers sound unoriginal. She's really one of a kind! And jazz fits her so good, I can't handle iiiiiit. Do I have to pray the god of music to get a new PMJ cover with her? I know she's currently doing an album but man I just feel like she never shine as bright than when she's with PMJ. Don't get me wrong, I really like the songs that she's releasing right now like The Letter, For What It's Worth, These Boots Were Made For Walking etc., I love them, I even got them on my iPod but I just can't help having an eargasm when she's singing with PMJ, it's just the way it is ; _ ;
Yes I've already listened to them, her album is great ! But it's not really PMJ, it's just Scott Bradlee who plays piano. Those 2 tracks don't sound like PMJ to me, more like 60's-70's tracks but it's still awesome!
++Victoria Aye, you're right enough. It seems to be Scott Bradlee only. Still, there are tremendous tracks on the album. I was a bitty disappointed with the first two albums which for my taste were over-produced with busy arrangements that got in the way of her voice. However, on this album the arrangements and backing are much more stripped down and her voice comes across so much more clearly with different tonal colours and improvisations. You can really appreciate what she is doing with her voice as well as you could with PMJ which until now showed her voice off best.

American Idol wants one type of voice. The American Idol voice. And no one actually enjoys that voice, most people prefer an actual interesting voice with emotional inflection.
I don't watch Idol so I never heard of her until I saw her on UA-cam. I went back and watched some of the Idol stuff and didn't really like it. I was not her I think, it was what the show wants to make singers into. The stuff with PMJ is really great. Just goes to show you.

And she really got into it. Riding that emotional train all the way into *completely* rocking out!
The mic got in the way of her headbanging.
Hayley is AMAZING! She's by far my favourite singer from PMJ. I've just discovered PMJ and really enjoying all the tracks.

Haley's voice is made for these kinds of songs. I was sad when she was voted off American Idol... BUT I am pleased to see she is still singing. :)
it seems to me that not always the best singer wins.
That dress is SICK. Everything. Just everything.
This video was posted 7 years ago. Is it OK that I’m still listening and making comments? I have loved this lady since American Idol and was so disappointed she didn’t win. She’s much better off because PMJ is the perfect vehicle for her skills. ❤ to all the musicians!
yes sir
@@lougraziano6356 It is more than OK to positively comment on this lady and the band. Wonderful experience. :)
That little minx can sing......oh lawdyyyy.....
It would of destroyed her if she. Had won A idol thing.
I find it rather amusing how she cheerfully sings these apocalyptic dark lyrics.
Chris Cornell has on occasion referred to the duality of the song. "I liken it to Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd, where there's a happy veneer over something dark. It's not something I can do on purpose but occasionally it will happen by accident."
That's why I especially like this cover! Her voice is perfect for this song, with it's dark sweetness on some of those low notes.
I think this is what Grunge meant to show. Throwing it at the happy mainstream cheeriness, and giving a "voice" to the darker but oh so real sides off life, embrace it and not be afraid to accept these feelings in oneself.
;)
Vinicius Ferreira da Silva that's how you would sneak in some real shit back in the day.
Musicians and singers take notes. This is how you do a cover. Don't just imitate. Take the original and make it yours.
EXACTLY, none of this copying and pasting of a classic to dickride to fame
Heh... "notes".
Yeah bro way too many people freak out when you play a song “wrong”
I mean seriously what’s the point of making something that sounds *exactly* like the original. It’s so dead end.
I want Haley to do a Bond movie theme.

Have you seen the Norah Jones cover of Black Hole Sun?
I'm here because of Haley
I could listen to Hailey singing row row row your boat and be completely happy in my life, she is a much needed joyful voice in this oh so dark world we live in
I’m actually happy Haley didn’t win American Idol. She has tons more freedom to create content for us without the cigar chomping exec getting in her way. Super talented, super creative, and super beautiful is a wonderful winning formula.
Well, there's also the odd fact that a lot of times, the people who come in 2nd or 3rd do better than the winners, which has been going on since Star Search.
I knew I recognized her! Most AI "losers" do ten times better without AI. The only winners that are still doing good is Kelly Clarkson and Fantasia
"By the way, which one's pink?" - Pink Floyd
@@pfoster1666 That is 100% a thing. The winners pump out a ready-made album and fade into obscurity. Second or third places in those trashy 'contests' inevitably get snapped up by, like, real record labels, looking for talent.
She'd be the one smoking the cigar!
I'm scared of covers ruining the original and disrespecting the artists who composed the original. But you all knocked this out of the park 😉

Stay vintage. So much potential. Expose young people to all kinds of music.
What’s old is new again ! Genius !!!
Beverly Hayshouston 👍🏻Because the music kids are listening to today is just totally a disgrace, it’s all untalented, electronic, sampling bullshit.
@@BobbyGeee what the kids today listen to on the radio is just noise not music. And the sad part of it is they don't even know it
@@beefonweckeastside3323 Just because You don't like today's music doesn't mean it's bad. A good suggestion.
I am a 90's kid, I think this song very much needed to be done in this way and she is just the one to do it. ;)

Any other whisper-to-a-scream singers you recommend?
Her vocal expressions are simply unbelievable ! I have No words that could do her justice
Hailey is simply the most outstanding singer I have ever come across in the last two decades!❤
How does anyone give this a thumbs down? Her voice is absolutely perfect. She sounds like an angel. Makes my hairs stand on end. Love it!
I know... Sadly, there are people out there with no appreciation of real talent.
Cherry Lynn I guess some people couldn't handle real talent...🤔
I'm not one of these people but a lot of people can't get over the bubbly interpretation of an otherwise darker song. Even if that's true, she just does it so well, who cares?
DozyProductions I cannot find this bubbly at all
Maybe people who don't care for the warbling ostentatious style of singing. I didn't downvote, but I can understand those who might based on the actually quality disparity between this sweet song bird vs. the subdued yet powerful original. A stripped-down, bluesy version would fit the lyrics better. This simply reeks of *novelty*. Not a serious interpretation.
I came in skeptical, left a believer.

There are no words to describe Haley's magnificent voice. It makes anything and everything sound just way much better. Love PMJ

Dude do yourself a favor and listen to morgan james. Haley is great but morgan is as least as great
@@infinite_ammo ehh. Morgan's darker tone begins to grade on my ears after a while. I could see the same argument being made for Haley's raspy voice but coming from a blues back ground I love it.
@@infinite_ammo
I've huge respect for both singers but I prefer Haley.
Haley Reinhart is probably my favorite (yes, followed closely by Morgan James), but I'm glad they have brought in so many amazing artists.
Having a variety of singers at their disposal and knowing how to use them is what makes PMJ so great. I love listening to my faves yet I also love being exposed to new faces and new talent I otherwise may have never found. 🙂
I love the simple blocking of this-put one camera on a tripod and push record. Let the performance speak for itself.
Indeed.
befingered - I didn’t notice for a long time that virtually every PMJ video is like this. 1 continuous take from a single camera. It makes Haley’s performance even more amazing. Betty Boop down to hands and eyes for the first 3 minutes and then she goes for more. I love it!
Except why hide the drummer?
Sublime. The first few seconds in and I’m like wow, that voice and that arrangement. This song has been done justice and more.

How she got third on American idol?? One of the best singers alive
American idol isn't concerned with talent, they're concerned about who they can make the most money off of. It's marketability and profits not skill.

Do I have to pray the god of music to get a new PMJ cover with her? I know she's currently doing an album but man I just feel like she never shine as bright than when she's with PMJ. Don't get me wrong, I really like the songs that she's releasing right now like The Letter, For What It's Worth, These Boots Were Made For Walking etc., I love them, I even got them on my iPod but I just can't help having an eargasm when she's singing with PMJ, it's just the way it is ; _ ;
so true :) give us more!

There are two tracks with PMJ on her new album "What's That Sound" that has just been issued this last week or so. It's on Spotify.
Yes I've already listened to them, her album is great ! But it's not really PMJ, it's just Scott Bradlee who plays piano. Those 2 tracks don't sound like PMJ to me, more like 60's-70's tracks but it's still awesome!

Aye, you're right enough.
Yeah I totally agree! Her new album is her best one yet. The raspiness of her voice in Oh Darlin' and White Rabbit is just... wow
I absolutely adore Haley. Her voice is so impressive I'd die for a voice like hers❤❤
I can't even imagine the energy in the room during recording. Outstanding!!!!
*Stands up and applauds, quickly and loudly.*
Lyrics for anyone who wants to sing along, but doesn't know all the words
In my eyes, indisposed
In disguises no one knows
Hides the face, lies the snake
The sun in my disgrace
Boiling heat, summer stench
'Neath the black the sky looks dead
Call my name through the cream
And I'll hear you scream again
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come (won't you come)
Stuttering, cold and damp
Steal the warm wind tired friend
Times are gone for honest men
And sometimes far too long for snakes
In my shoes, a walking sleep
And my youth I pray to keep
Heaven sent hell away
No one sings like you anymore
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Hang my head, drown my fear
Till you all just disappear
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come
Black hole sun
Won't you come
And wash away the rain
Black hole sun
Won't you come
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come (black hole sun, black hole sun)
Won't you come
Won't you come

Except for one major difference. This version changes "my youth I pray to keep" to "soul I pray to keep." Listened to this like 10 time and just noticed it. Weird.
Need proof that American Idol was a crap show? Haley finished 3rd on her season. She is absolutely amazing. I can't get enough of her.
American Idol wants one type of voice. The American Idol voice. And no one actually enjoys that voice, most people prefer an actual interesting voice with emotional inflection.
I agree, an idol doesn’t need the most talent, they need the most votes lmao
I don't watch Idol so I never heard of her until I saw her on UA-cam. I went back and watched some of the Idol stuff and didn't really like it. I was not her I think, it was what the show wants to make singers into. The stuff with PMJ is really great. Just goes to show you.
Just as well since the losers generally tend to do better than the winners. Who else did well post-Idol besides Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood?
Just like when Melinda Doolittle finished in third place. Criminal.
I love this woman's voice! 🥰 She's Gorgeous 🥰😍
