  • This is a live shading demo. I'll show you how to use elements of light on form to depict a 3D object on a flat surface. I'll also introduce how to simplify any complex form into its primary, secondary, and tertiary forms using the human skull as an example.
    During the demo l'll answer questions from people watching live. If you're interested in learning more about shading, I recommend watching these tutorials:
    The Basic Elements: • The Basic Elements - S...
    Shading Light & Form - Basics: • Shading Light and Form...

    Looking for hours for a basic shading guide, all I needed was this. You are really good at putting seemingly complicated things into simple, logic and clear terms. Thanks a lot, I don’t think you realize how important you are to self taught artists.

      +nicko van loon I think Alphonso's work is decent, but he rambles on and on and on and REPEATS himself! Drive me nuts. I don't have time to watch a 45 min. video that could have been done in 20 min.

    Thanks for the work you do Proko team. Just watching this and realising how much work has gone into improving the production values over the years. The content is always great, but your development of video production skills, tools, and spaces is continuing to pay off for your subscribers. Congrats on the work you do. Looking forward to the new site and offerings. Hope I can afford them.

    1:12:11 (light bulb)... so obvious yet I wouldn't have got that unless someone told me. I watched the whole thing and I really wish I would have been there to have asked 1 or 2 questions about shading that've just plague me as an artist, but I learned A LOT of really neat and interesting things I never really thought much about. To know that there ARE principles is a breath of fresh air. It now gives us a great starting point when we are considering our subjects'. All to often, one can practice, practice, practice and practice some more but never get any better, simply because one never had a good place to start in the first place. We only get stronger through understanding though, well, and a lot of practice with old and new ideas. Thank you for all your help, time, patience and contributions to the world of art Stan!

    Great video! I am so excited to learn more about perspective. I don't have problems with drawing simple cubes and forms in perspective, but when those forms twist and turn, when they do something unpredictable, I freeze because I don't know what to do with it. Even when we did figure drawing, I couldn't figure out (no pun intended) how to "mannequinise" the figure.

    First of all, awesome video Proko. almost everything you taught I understood, and I'm a beginner. Like you said about talent not really playing much of a role, I completely agree. The way I look at it is, if I'm not good at something, it isn't because I'm not talented, but because I don't have the right information or lack of, to be able to fulfil what I want to achieve. So for me, your video has explained shading in a way that made a lot of sense to me, so thank you. Secondly, I noticed that some of the areas were not exactly like the picture, is this because you wanted the drawing to have your own version, or was the drawing a quick demonstration which could have been done with more skill in time??

  • @um304
    @um304 8 років тому +2

    Hi Stan, thanks for the amazing video. One question: you mentioned that shading with graphite pencil is really slow because you can't use sides. Have you ever tried peeling off a long tip out of them and then using the side, just like you do with a charcoal pencil? If not, why you wouldn't do it? Much thanks.

    I've been trying to get better at shading for a while. It wasn't until recently that I noticed the pencil strokes should not only help describe the form, but also follow the angle of the light. Notice how Proko's strokes are done in a way that may be perceived as awkward for a right-handed artist (at least at the beginning of the shading process). Hope that helps someone out there.

    • @robinlinh
      @robinlinh 6 років тому +4

      Probably a little bit late but this is how I work it out after a long time of practice: when you learn, if you feel the need to calculate and measure to understand the proportion, do it, if that help you understand better. But always remember, if in the end it’s looked wrong, then it’s wrong, no matter how carefully you measure it. So always trust your eye, and adjust your painting until you see fit, and then slowly you will develop the intuition
