- Steven Zapata is known for his amazing illustrations and skillful shading techniques. In this lesson he gives you an exercise for improving your ability to invent shaded forms! You’ll watch him assemble abstract flesh-like clusters to demonstrate how to make design decisions for rendering light and dark that you can apply to any form you can imagine. Wish I had seen this exercise 55 years ago, thanks for a brilliant tutorial!!!❤️
This is exactly what I needed. I just couldn't understand the basic concept of getting shading started. I used shading in life drawing, but was too afraid to put deep shadows just putting in enough to show it exists.
Shit!!...you are bringing in every legendary artist out there.
The last videos on Proko channel are very high-quality content this channel keeps getting better and better.
It's weird, but these tips are really resonating with me. I need to try this exercise out some time.
Dude, this guy it totally copying you
This 'Steven Zapata' guy seems like a really good artist don't you think?
How can i get good enough to teach myself?
You'll improve in no time!
Thank you for showing us how to shade turds, I will go and do some life studies after I've taken a fat shit.
Hell yes! This is very much relevant to my interests.
I too like wrinkly tentacles
@@1u8taheb6 dont we all?!
I do well with objects in front of me... not afraid of using darkest colors to render in my pastel paintings, but trying to get my very active imagination placed down onto paper has been frustrating. This is precisely the sketch challenge I have been planning, but now do not need to reinvent the wheel, but can take it far and fast with his help! Thank you very much!
This is fantastic and extremely useful. The mistake you pointed out at 6:00 has me written all over it! Thank you for breaking it down and explaining it so clearly.
15:40 K K K CALM DOWN
So funny part, his hands are also talking in a so clear way xD
this is the explosion of frustration, accumulated from seeing his favourite tool misused for so long :'(
Such an amazing tutorial! I have been searching stuff for shading but this was the video that actually helped me understand and told me things other tutorials didn't lol. Thank you so much for this
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much!! :)
I mostly work from my imagination, yes we see a human form(usually taken from my own body, sadly, I am very petite/tiny, I always wanted to be shapely)which in my case I always exaggerate when I draw/paint. I am sure the muscles illustrated on super hero's was done with the same thoughts in mind. WINK WINK. I do often question my shadows and this video (even though I've been drawing and painting over 40 years) Is very helpful and makes you thoughtfully think about that shadow placement! Thank you so much.
Amazing thanks for sharing! Wonderful art! Stay safe! 🎨🎨🎨
More Advanced Creative Light and Shadow theory practice, cool. Good job. You might want to rethink the "meat spear" thing though. Just a thought.
Thanks practice is key for flow energy and focus inspiration for art schools
Muchas gracias por el vídeo es muy bueno
4:40 When he changed the lightbulb into a sun, I suddenly saw the organic plane as a desert plane. So even context can change the read of an image a lot...
This an excellent explanation of shadows. You can use it for painting too.
Also, you can use this for realism.
This tutorial is so easy to understand 🥰
Learned so much in these few minutes... 🤘🤘
Brilliant! Love the forms and the realism you achieve! 💖🌹
Amazing lesson!!
truly wonderful
Really helpful video. Thanks!
Unusual artist and unusual teacher, that was kinda strange experience, but it makes sense in the end! Thank you for the sample :).
This is useful, Thank You.
Brilliant demo!!! ❤️
Also, another dirt-cheap blending tool: Q-tips~!

Suuuupeeerb! Thank you so much !
Thanks for drawing today.
awesome lesson
Thank you for this vid It's well explained and very easy to understand:)
Thank you!
Those "abstract flesh clusters" look like a turd travelling a near light speed. Love it!
That video helped me so much
what the hell, This is so great!!! Thank you so much
I am a beginner and want to learn from you. Should I learn from your UA-cam videos, or buy your courses? What's the difference? Thanks.
Check out the courses, my UA-cam is mostly art shop-talk and arm chair philosophy.
Yoooo Steven!
Can’t fool me, that’s a Mon Calamari Star Cruiser!

What pencil are you using?
17:45 I use toilet paper when I want to keep the shapes, extremely soft and subtle.
You should put 3D modeling into your video so for new beginner they can make imagination
aaaayyyy (yes)
Dude, nice meat spear!
Oh Steven and his Trojan horse schemes. "Lets draw blobs." And by the end you know how to shade muscles.
I use the full darkness of 8B or 9B, How do you deal with the glare created by the soft graphite?

The tutorial is really cool guys! But isn’t this the literal definition of polishing a turd?
First..kinda
first
Shading isn’t the right word
It's an amazing tutorial from an amazing artist, but i need to say it...
Bro was shading a turd
This guy repeats himself too much.
Terrible opinion
The starting sketch gave me poop log vibes, then shading turned them antigravity lol
It's weird, but these tips are really resonating with me. I need to try this exercise out some time.
first
