Have a question about main spring replacements. My new mainspring once in the barrel has so much tension the loop on the end where the arbor goes is tight against the inner spring. When I try to center it up with the arbor hole & set the arbor the spring pulls out of the center of the barrel. Most installations I’ve seen the end loop is very close to the center and takes little effort to center up and place the arbor. What is my issue?
If this is the right spring, you may be able to very carefully shape the inside of the spring. The strength of your spring may be too much just verify that this is the right spring for the watch you have it in. It is this a watch or a pocket watch.
@@JDRichard I think I researched correctly. Being new at this it took a minute to determine it is a 12s Illinois 17j pocket watch. The sn shows it to be a 255 model 1. When I measured the old spring it was .17 mm thick & 1.98 wide and best I could estimate 18.5 inch long. I found a NOS with a part# 47343 & that is what I am using.
This tool comes in 3 sizes. I bought the 8-11mm version (123A) as that is the size of my Seiko 6106 barrel (10.8mm), but the axel is too wide to fit in the mainspring's innermost coil. Can you recall which size of the K&D tool you were using for this mainspring?
I have been servicing a few ETA 2846's with this set and the arbors are to large for the spring center. So I've now decided to go piece meal Bergeon winders which is a pricey proposition for a home hobbyist. Starting with two #6 & 7 eta arbors and a right handle is nearly $250. Ouch!
For me this tool how handy it seems with the adjustability of it just doesn't work. It kinks the spring because the "barrel" is open end it forces the spring out into one of these openings. Did you ever had this issue especially on the tail and of the spring?
What would be the barrel size of Seiko 6309 and 6119? I see Bergeon as a common result for mainspring winder searches over the internet. There are other brands but I can't seem to find brand new for sale. Any leads as to what alternative brand is good and where to buy them? Thanks!
Thanks for the tip and offer to help. I greatly appreciate it. Nice to know you’re a fan of Richard Turner. Great guy with great talent! Wishing you all the best!
can you plz give me some info on the winding tool accessories, i have just purchased the tool from america, i believe its a k & d mainspring winder , but it did not come with any other bits. regards steve miller
I think once you get the spring all the way in the winder you back wind just a little and the spring and winder dissengage and you can go from there. But I'm not a 100% sure or I wouldn't be watching these videos LOL!!

The spring keeps getting stuck on winding part of tool, il keep at it cuz boy I love this hobby! Thanks for sharing!
I usually use my hands to put pocket watch mainsprings back into the barrel...unless it is a size 12 or smaller

I actually can't, however, i do have around 6 different spring winders of this type.
What kind of alarm & mainspring winding tool would you recommend for Big Ben & Baby Ben clocks? Thank you
Sorry but don’t do clocks. Different winders
Were did you get your Mainspring winders from.
Ebay
How do you clean the mainspring? What cleaning solution?
Take it out and lighter fluid then let evaporate… done

@@JDRichard hmmm maybe I'm doing something wrong will have a second look in to it to see what went wrong and how to prevent it.

Dennis Zamora Need to practice those bottom deals:)
I guess you’d have to sleep with decks of cards on both hands :)
A good trick for not losing the arbor and controlling the spring is to put the barrel in a zip lock before taking it apart to capture everything.
Where buy?thanks
雅 雅 Dave’s Watch Parts
Jd Richard thanks
👌
Thanks:)
Use the red Moebius oil for the mainspring I would suggest this because it has a heavier viscosity. 😊

send me a picture of what you received? JDWatchboy on Facebook and reference the youtube comment please
Steve, a little late responding, but what did the tool come with?
Finger cots for Crissake! Why spend time cleaning and wipe it all over with finger acid? Wow.
I now where a glove on one hand where i would touch the movement, thanks

Karin Lefevre You are 100% correct. I have now done a boatload of springs and you do back it off a bit to disengage the pawl that catches the spring
It needs the same machine
(I'm a watch engineer)
And the drama continues.
Oh yes it does:)
