Sometimes ranching/ farming isn't easy. You have to make the hard decisions and stick to them. Yea taking old cows to the sale often doesn't even pay for your time and gas, much better BUSINESS decision to turn them in to ground beef. Really excited to see the forward movement you are making. Internationally the farmers (specifically the dairy breeds) are finding a selenium deficiency is the problem with empty cow's - they have found that when you sort them into their breeding group (go through the handling system) they get a selenium injection supplied by the vets

Hi, there! I just wanted to share a little information with you on blood handling. The Idexx tests that you used require "whole blood" which can be obtained from an EDTA tube (purple top tube) OR "serum" from a red top that has been spun down in a centrifuge. The reason why you were having trouble with the pipette not sucking up blood was because the blood was clotted. This can provide false results. Additionally, you should NEVER shake blood, no matter what color tube it is in. Shaking the tube destroys the cells in the blood and therefore you are no longer able to use it. Instead, gently invert the tubes, unless you have already separated the plasma or serum. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any questions. I am more than happy to help! :)

Andrea you did such a great job doing this for the first time and in front of the camera. Congratulations very well done. I was a nurse in the army 18 years and 20 in the civilian world. I have done IV's on cats and dogs I give my cat a steroid shot very tiny amount every month for real bad stomatitis in his mouth. So now I am half a vet nurse now also. So I think you did real well. So, what is your plan for Miracle? Is there a way to find out why she isn't bred (i.e. hormone imbalance) and maybe fix the problem?
We are going to try and AI her this winter and she should have a fall calf.

No we ran out of time. Hopefully be weighing calves in the next month or so.
Would you consider an AI process for Miracle with the specimen if a smaller bull given her history?
Yes Andrea is going to AI a group of heifers in the next month or so and we will AI her too. Probably a Jersey bull
I will take Miracle as a Pet, she is a surviver and maybe she still can have another calf. Maybe need a break.

What is the shelf life of the unused tests in the refrigerator?
I’m not totally sure. We just buy them as we need them.
Just out of curiosity how many times does the cow show open before you cull. I know it depends on the farmer. I’m just gathering info for our some day.

We had 5 cows that didn’t calve this year but several of the cows had lost their tags so we weren’t sure who they were. We are short on hay and also have several new heifers coming up to replace our old cows. This year we gave them 4-5 months to breed back and what wasn’t was who we are culling. I know some farmers give them 90 days and if they don’t breed back they cull them.
Some farmers only keep what breeds in 21 days, raises a healthy calf, and looks healthy-all on grass, hay, and cafeteria style minerals.
Lots of different goals on today's farms. Some are in the black and look like they are in the red, nothing fancy. Some are in the red and appear to be well stocked in cash. Looks can be deceiving.
If the unbred cows are not to old, couldn't you separate them & reintroduce a bull to them or AI them ?
Yes we could. 1 of them is pretty aggressive with a calf, a couple of them are pretty old and we are almost out of ground beef. We have 23 heifers to breed this winter to replace old cows.

Not being able to calve, doesn't mean that the cow is unhealthy. The cow is just old and her meat will be tougher, not suitable for specialty cuts.
I don’t mean unhealthy. That was a poor choice of words. Just definitely need to be culled. Needing more attention, not thriving on grass and looking skinnier than we’d like etc.
Why would you name this vlog, “ is Miracle getting culled” when you absolutely have no intention of culling her? I love y’all’s videos so much. I wait for y’all to post them. I really see no reason for the need for the use of click bate. It’s an assault on our intelligence in my opinion. I know all I have to do is just stop watching and go on my merry way but I had to say my feelings. I will still be a faithful follower but dang y’all. I hope your thanksgiving was wonderful 🍁💙
This isn't true click bait. Miracle made it to the cull list, where a decision had to be made. Click bait is not an assault, it's just annoying.

We honestly didn’t feel this was a click bate title but we do try and give an eye catching title. We do this to try and get people that aren’t consistent or regular viewers to watch too.
