BMW E93 Boot Water Leak FIX

- My boot recently had water leaks after lots of rain. Here's how i fixed it. I didn't show it in the video, but once you have done this, it's best to dry the battery compartment out with a hairdryer, to try and save your battery if it's not too late.
Cant believe how much water came out; but good on you for tackling & solving the issue. Great video to alert others.
there is a pocket that the rear window regulator sits in, which is about 2/3's of the rear quarter, if that drain is blocked. it will fill that pocket up
Thanks for posting this. I Have the same issue with my E93 currently, driving me nuts.
It’s been 3 years since you posted this; but just wanted to say thanks. This worked wonders. Didn’t even need a jack.
You're very welcome my friend, happy to help!
@@BEE003SXP hey man is there any way I can send you a picture of something because I do not have that port on my 2012 e93 335is trying to find it but I don’t see anything there I’m on the front right I see you have a cut out for it in the side skert but I don’t

@@noahzm_bro I still haven’t I just got my car back from bmw and they said I have 6/8 inches in the rear left and right behind the rear door panels she said I had to take the doorhandles off and find the tubes and drain them and apparently there is a filter there you have to clean out and get a new filter or just clean it out really good and pop the filter back in but in this video, it says otherwise, so I’m completely clueless and no one answers on here.
@@gagebeckwith2250 where’s ur water leaking from I got a e93 335is and it’s coming from thr a pillar i put some gasket seal in in there and it’s holding up 🤞
God damn I gotta love these bmws one major problem after another
Thanks this video helps my issue, I've been trying to find where the water is getting in. My BMW E93 Convertible, has the same issue but much worse, if you don't empty the water, it leaks inside the car, despite two summers the water remained under the carpet and didn't dry out. My only option was to remove the saturated back seat and take it indoors, replace the entire interior carpet. Vacuum out the water and leave the car to dry for one entire summer. The leather interior got mould every where, had to get the seats recoated and two years later the car still remains under a cover and still isn't back on the road due to electrical issues. Now I got a low millage immaculate 330i drop top garden ornament! lol

You manage to drain it out ?
@@111kingy1111 Yes all dry now, finally and will be back on the road shortly.
That's me in the morning after a night of drinking.
Same as others in my e93 I thought it was the petrol tank I could hear lol. Mine sounds like a bath tub storing water in the back. Thanks for solving this.. where's my jack.
Good informative video, the drain plug is 14mm hex socket and there are actually arrows pointing the way to turn to remove the drain
All e93? I heard there was 2 in the front under the driver and passenger side front wheel well I guess you have to pull them out to access them let me know if you know for sure of any just got my car back from bmw for oil filter housing and they said there is about 6-8 inches of water inside where the rear window ends but she said to access the drain holes I have to pull the rear door cards off and find the drain holes but in this video he’s doing in under the car where the rear bumper is I’m assuming for both sides not sure so any advice would be helpful if you’ve done this yourself thank you very much
@@gagebeckwith2250did u solve it? Same problem
@@motoshot8493 too much stuff going on bmw did my ofh gasket and sprayed 4 cans of break cleaner on my block and ruined my pulley bearings so haven’t been driving it till the parts come in gonna have to have my bud help install cuz he’s got all the tools as well as the 14mil hex you need to pop the drain plug lol. BMW dealers eat 💩1200 parts and labor parts cost me 150 bucks and a few bowls.
@@gagebeckwith2250 god damn man, good luck, itll be worth it!
Wonderful work my man..this just worked a treat for me..
Thanks alot for this pal. Mine was on the other side. Worth noting that on the passenger side there seems to be a 3rd fixing in the plastic as mine wouldn't come all the way off, however I managed to pry the plug out and my God, maybe 10L came gushing out all over me. If you can get the plastic all the way off then you can undo the drain plug properly (I couldn't) which looks to be a very large hex/Allen key, maybe 13mm. I've pried mine out with two screwdrivers and destroyed it, but for what it's worth I'll probably order a new one from BMW.
See my comment up above: There are also 3 rivets (Part No. 51 16 1 881 149) that hold each trim piece on. Basically you have to push the center pin all the way through the rivet (1/2" or so). I used a metal pick but something less sharp would be better. It's very easy to lose this center pin so i recommend buying new rivets (~$0.40 each, 6 total) before you do this job.
Also, the drain plug is 14mm. When you go to loosen it, do it by hand. You only need to rotate it an ~1/8 of a turn until it stops. DO NOT ROTATE MORE as all you need to do is align the pins and pull down. It does not screw out.
I've been chasing down a random water leak near your same location but water leaks onto the battery cover carpet compartment on my E93. Sometimes there's water spots and somedays it's bone dry. Will give this a try thank you.
Did u solve it?
@@abdullahcheema7061 Hey. Yeah I solved my issue! Open your trunk, vacuum the water channel, lift up on all the rubber seals gently and use a toothbrush to remove more hidden debris out of there, spray it all down with isopropyl alcohol, dry it up with a microfiber, then use any ceramic coating on the entire water channel in the trunk. I used "Turtle Wax Hybrid Solutions Ceramic Spray Coating 16 FL Oz". Then finish it all off by applying Gummi-Pflege on the rubber seal. I haven't seen any water over that battery tray for over 2 years now even with my car parked outside of the garage during a rain storm.
just checked mine..dry as a bone:) never knew they existed until a potential buyer asked me about them.
I saw my ex mechanic something opened on the left side a year ago(same car)and thank god 10l came out slowly.
..today I heard something strange on the right side (back window closed and some water was heard)and I looked and found only on the left side..that black cap...but on the right i had to snap like a cm and just a little bit touch it with the screwtool and it came all out also like 8 l...so I fixed it without some special time or tools and even in the dark...i didn't dirt myselft.and the black tap is likely untouched...even if it can be pull out with pulling out with force after 180°it is not neccesarly.Just move it a little bit till the water finds it's way out.maybe I had to wait 20seconds more..but now is much better. Before it was a wet sauna feeling all the time...and windows also...nightmare..also for health.:)
Thx for your help bud🙏🏻🍺🍺🍺😎
Did you have the water sloashing sound while riding? Or just no sound and water still was there?
The reason it takes so long to drain, is it fills that side pocket up with water, the down side to this is, the window regulator and window regulator motor sit in the water once it gets so high. and once you have drained this, it tends to wreck the regulator motor, as ive just found out. just striped the motor down and cleaned it all up as the internals were caked in crud and water.
Hi. Is it the same for the other side?
Are these water release points on the the e92 (hard top) ( without sun roof) ?
Will this work for a 2014 650i grand coupe
Hello thanks for your video, I had the same issue and thanks to your video I hope I solved the problem,
I took the drain plug out and indeed there were liters of water getting out,
but now my drain plug is damaged and I kept the water exit open, will that cause any problems?
no
Thanks mate, great video. What was the point of sticking the hose pipe in at the end though?
Just to clear it out a bit
I heard a water noise in my convertible E93. But I took out the plug and there's still a water noise coming from the back passenger door panel. Any clues what I can do or where it's coming from? I need a second option. No water coming from drain plug.
Does this problem affect the series 4 convertible ?????
there is a part you show at 0:49. How do you call it ? Thanks.
You have in both sides water or just one
"The Ultimate Leaking Machine"
I've been having an issue where it sounds like water is getting into either the AMP compartment, or behind the rear door where my back speaker is (get a lot of fuzzy audio after rain or washing the car) recently the amp compartment has been bone dry, so hoping this fixes the door speaker issue as I don't want to get all new gaskets or anything.
Having the same issue with speakers. Were u able to resolve it? Thanks
@@abdullahcheema7061 me too, did u solve it?
Hiw does the water get in by the battery in the first place?
Just done my 08 model just the same. I really can’t see the point of having the bung? The lowest 1/2” has no escape holes the lower plastic flap would prevent stuff going up. I realise now this is what destroyed the window mechanism. The lower part of the mechanism must be permanently submerged in water. The cable corrodes and gives way as it runs around the lower pulley.
did any rust form?
I got the same problem, pulled the plug and it was full of gunk but no water came out.
I put roof half way back and you could see reservoir was overfull.
I think I have a blockage higher up, any tips on how to get at it?
Did you sort this mate ?
Had water in my e46 for 6 weeks til I realised the drain holes near the vert lift up was blocked. I had to lift my rear carpet up & swueeze & drain the water out.
Fair to say I had a foisty smell in my car for weeks!
Yeah stagnent water stinks!
@@BEE003SXP
Sure does mate. Took me awhile to work out how to get to the water but it was really simple to unclip the rear seats and lift the carpet up enough to soak it up.

@@mister.c4631 did you have a water sloashing sound till riding?
Do you have to replace the black valve that you took out, or leave it out permanently?
You can put the same valve back in. It will fit back and the flap will make sure it stays if you haven't broken the teeth to hold it in
Hey I am The same problem in my 2008 bmw 335i E93 but getting water in my backseat do you know what’s making doing that ?
Check for any cracked pipes water would flow down. Try putting your convertible top half way up and check the guttering tubes that connect when it's together
Thank you so much I really appreciate it and do you think you could make a tutorial video

Also did the hose clean it out good?
Yeah, the clog was basically in the plastic part I took out but I used the hose just incase the muck was backed up
Hello. I have the same problem. Full of water underneath the battery. I have to try what you did. But so you know from where the water is coming in? Thanks
Comes in the the water channels along the separations of the convertible section. It's basically car guttering. You'll see it if you lift the top half way
It is possible to water came out without doing this? I was having sloashing sound but it dissapeared after taking a ride...
Mine came and went but it got to a point where it built up too much and started soaking the battery. Would fully recommend sorting it sooner than later
Holy shit I can't believe it stores this much in it haha.
I hope this is all I have to do to stop my electrics from dying
May need to swap the battery after if it's too late
@@BEE003SXP well so far only symptoms are the audio cracking so it's got to the amplifier on the other side, the battery area was wet in the boot but I haven't inspected the actual battery yet. Fingers crossed!
My plan is first to pull the amp fuse and then see if I can get underneath and dry out but it's harder on an E93 :(
@@BEE003SXP I did this and nothing came out, stuck a pencil Up and nothing. Boot is wet all over though, maybe it’s just the £450 roof seal 🤷♂️
@@MRFUCKOFF202 did u solve it later?
@@motoshot8493 initially stopped cracking by removing amp fuse. Then I stopped it leaking by cleaning the seals above/around the boot and applying Gummipfleger. Finally removed trim, dried out, put new amp in.
Ive got a 2007 325 and the left hand side in yhe boot filled up drowning the amp. Cant work out where its coming from
Did you find source of it? I have the same - didn't check yet if these drains do exist on 2007 - do you know?
Do you put the plug back in or leave it out?
i put it back in
I didn't put the plug back.
@@peppi6 had any issues since?
So just had mine jacked up. Pulled the plugs on both side. No water :-)
Why are our jack stand points plastic? Anyone know?
No idea, but they seem to hold up fairly well for the weight

I have this exact issue but when I remove the plugs even though they are wet and dirty no water comes out ? Yet I can see the water under the battery ?!
You may have a tear in the guttering of the channels causing water to flow but leak into the boot. Try putting your convertible up half way and check for leaks where the points connect
@@BEE003SXP but how can I drain out the water that’s stuck in the battery well currently ? I will do what you said Thankyou :)
@@lymejourneywithalex6602 remove the battery and get a hairdryer and evaporate all the water. That's what I did. Just leave it pointing at the water and let it stay blow drying for 5 mins or so
Ok mate so even when you take the hung out still doesn’t fully drain the water from battery compartment ? Annoying that is haha thanks for replying :)
@@lymejourneywithalex6602 no problem. I think the bung is for the water inside the cars 'guttering' not for any excess water in the boot space. Happy to help!
Can you not just leave the plug out?
I don't see why not!
The plug is supposed to stop things from getting in like critters and blasts of water (think of a car wash that cleans the under carriage or hitting a deep puddle at speed). To me it seems much more likely this thing gets clogged and backs the water into your trunk lol. BMW fixed one problem and created an even bigger one
what happens if you just leave the drain plug out?
I put mine back but I don't think anything bad would happen as it's only a drain plug
