BMW E90 Water in the battery compartment

  • Опубліковано 27 жов 2020
  • This video is about water entering the rear sections of the car, specifically both right and left hand side corners where the battery is situated and the amp/cd changer. Also the back seat is wet too.
    I explain how I removed all the water and where you can find the grommets to check and remove the water.
    I had the airbag and seatbelt warning light come on and the backseats being wet which started my investigation.
    Luckily for me my battery cables and BTS cable was fine. I cleaned these up and put everything back together and the airbag light has been reset with no further issues.
    I have also checked for water entry by getting it hosed down with water from outside while looking and searching in all areas of the boot and all looks fine.
    GOOD LUCK!

    Thanks so much!!! The car was fine this morning going to work, when I got off, she wouldn't start. Attached a jumper to the front terminals, still won't turn over, then I looked at the battery compartment, just as you described, dry walls, but filled with water. Took an Uber home as I'll deal with this tomorrow!!! Thanks!!!

    Great Vid! Everyone with an E90/E92 should check this. I had this issue. I also drilled a small drain hole in my battery compartment so if it ever does happen again at least it will drain. Because when it happened for me, i only noticed when the water froze and killed the battery actually. killed a 1yr old battery in one night.. fixed the wires and new battery, all good. I want to replace the bulkhead fittings for the wires one day or find a way to just bypass them because i think it's unnecessary really..
    If the B+ terminal/BTS wire popped, from the air bag connector, youd have no starter but the inside would work fine, as far as having power for the radio, etc..

    Thanks for the video - very helpful. I had watery sloshing noises from around the rear seats, and water seeping up into the underlay under the rear seats. No water in the battery compartment as far as I could see, but once I took out all the trim (same as in the video) I found there was a bit of pooled water in the compartment on the other side, where I guess the CD changer would go.
    Mine's a later LCI E90 (build date Feb 2010) but the holes under the car are in about the same place. A fair bit of water came out when I removed the bungs, and there's been no sloshing in the week since, despite rain. So looking good.
    The gap highlighted at ~4'00" looks like it's welded shut on mine, but there's no shortage of other gaps for water to potentially get in and slowly build up.
    (I haven't replaced any of the seals on mine. I'll see how it goes.)

    Thank you for this vid! I feel your pain, had the same problem. Battery compartment completely filled. $2500 in repairs and I still have 2 blown speakers and a bad connection somewhere
    My question is how in the hell did BMW drop the ball on this? My old E36 has a drain in the battery compartment. I called BMWUSA and complained and of course you know how that went. Brand new $42k car and to have this happen is ridiculous. Shame on BMW and their brilliant engineers for this design. How many cars did they produce?2 million? Garbage

    Thanks for the video. I had another problem, the car stunk of diesel, airbag and seatbelt lights showing same as you on the dash. It was diesel, not water in the battery well. Same as you, removed battery, there was diesel about 1/2 inch up the battery, connections all covered with diesel. In the process of drying all out, to try and find leak. I reckon it's coming from breather pipe, and leaking down the inside of the wheel arch. Will test tomorrow. Punched out the plastic grommet at the bottom, so at least it won't fill again.

    • @kwikmechanic6844
      @kwikmechanic6844  3 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the comment. Ok so the corner areas do not have any drain points hence the water collects. You will have to take the water out with a small cup or large syringe. However, if you have water under your back seats then there are rubber caps (grommets) under your car which you can pull off to let the water drain.

The black plastic/rubber vents next to the battery. These can let water in too. While you have everything open you might as well check that area too.

    • @onlyme1210
      @onlyme1210 4 місяці тому

      Yeah those boots vents caused a problem for me. The water filled up in the side cavity and went under the panelling to the battery. Be careful with aftermarket retro fitting, as they can use vents to feed wires.

Make sure there is no water in your floor, just remove the rubber grommets from underneath the car and that should tell you how much water is hiding by how much pours out. Hi Michael, yes if the water is coming in from the seals. Making a hole is not a bad thing, but if it’s just a hole that hasn’t been primed then you could develop rust later on down the line. How did you remove the airbag switch or cable?

      Hi, please watch the video at 1:25, the air bag cable does not come out as it runs through the length of the car. The air bag connector is what you need to disconnect and check and if necessary clean

    People keep saying to drill holes under the battery. But I can see 2 round plastic plugs there. Would removing them not create drainage?

    • @kwikmechanic6844
      @kwikmechanic6844  Рік тому

      I don’t think there is a drainage hole in the battery compartment. If you do make a hole that’s not solving the problem. Check the boot seal which could be letting the water in through the sandwich part of the body. I’d you do make a hole then rust proof it and seal it.
