      It's so that the car knows what type of battery it is and prevents overcharging or undercharging. This is what the registering process entails. Inputting the battery stats to the car. Usually these cars come from the factory with smaller capacity batteries to save weight. But if you want to add for instance a 2000w audio setup, you might want to upgrade the battery. But if the car still thinks it's running the smaller capacity unit, the new one will never get fully charged. It's a neat feature but most people are not into this stuff and treat their vehicle like any other appliance. Which is fine, but in that case they probably shouldn't get a BMW.

      I’ve been maintaining our 4-5 BMW’s for next to nothing in terms of parts costs. And the drivetrain in all of them lasts over 400k

    I knew from the beginning of this video what the issue was. 99% of older BMW owners can't afford the care and upkeep on it and just bought it for clout. 😂 You need a BMW specialist computer and an AGM battery it CAN NOT be a normal lead acid battery... The issue is the alternator constantly ramps up over time to compensate for battery drain over time. The problem with this is the feature where the vehicle computer can detect the new voltage and amps from the battery so it should know if it's new or not is non existent. BMW in their extensive intelligence decided they'd prefer something as simple as a battery change requiring a computer flash to reset the battery! I won't even work on BMW anymore at all or Mercedes. If I get a call about one I politely say I don't work on them sorry.

    if you disconnect the IBS from negative terminal your car should start if the IBS is the issue. the one one positive side is for airbags. I would've checked the engine ground. I had a bad IBS and when it was connected it wouldn't charge the battery.

      I’m in this situation with a 2010 535i Xdrive. I initially thought it was the battery so I replaced it. Then I replaced the starter and that didn’t work… next was IBS so I unplugged it but that didn’t work either. Thought it might be the engine ground so I tried recharging it through jump cables, then taking one black and putting it on my black jump terminal and the other to the engine block to try and manually ground the car - didn’t work either :(
      I bought a scanner and it mentioned IBS but I cleared it and it didn’t come back. It also had a GWS undervoltage code, alternator, and electric coolant pump code. Any advice would be appreciated my next move is to buy a multimeter and a tool to test current

    • @ThruDaLenz
      @ThruDaLenz 7 місяців тому +1

      @destructionn98 I think there are two grounds. one that goes from starter altenator to frame on front driver side. and from engine to frame. check both. it can be the fuel/fuel pump. so you might want to check the make sure everything working in fuel area. I have a cigarette lighter voltage meter reader. if I turn the car (not running) on it will tell me if the voltage is proper. if the voltage is proper check fuel, ecm, and related fuses. also you should know the condition of your spark plugs, coils, HPFP, fuel pump and filter

      @@mannymoo What does it do, no crank or crank no start? You would need to look at the CAS/BDC/FEM and look at terminal control and see if terminal 50 is being powered. If you wanted to check your block ground all you need to do is put one meter lead to your block and another to chassis ground and crank, if you have over a volt you need to fix that. I won't stress anything below a volt when running the starter, because the grounds on the N55 are hard to access and 1 volt during a 350 peak amp 120avg amp draw is still in the realm of starting and eh/ok in my book. Don't beat yourself up on buying the parts and it not fixing the problem you were probably going to need them anyways if you're keeping the car.

    • @d47000
      @d47000 7 місяців тому +1

      @@mannymoo Just FYI, IBS, Alternator, oil level sensor, and electric water pump are all on the SAME serial bus. I would look up some block diagrams for the BSD bus and start there first. GWS is just the gearshift I think, I wouldn't chase your tail on that one unless you're having issues with shifting out of park, etc.
      It's a one wire bus so if there's a short in one of the components, it'll take everything else out, same thing if there's a wiring fault.
      I dealt with an issue where my electric water pump was causing an "IBS Missing" code and making my A/C act funky. I disconnected the water pump for a brief moment (very brief!) while the car was running, et voila, A/C went back to normal. $40 water pump from the junkyard cured it. I might try the same if I were you, just disconnect one component at a time.

    Hey no hate, but it would have been interesting to actually see it start afterwards because BMW does not log when a battery has been replaced without registration as a fault. You can see it under previous registrations that there has not been one at a recent mileage. It will not cause a no start. The IBS is also not what you were showing her, you showed her the explosive discharge on the positive battery cable and the negative one is the one who houses the tiny IBS module. It is relatively easy to forget to plug it in because it's a blue connector that's towards the tail light that's easy to miss. I don't think it was properly checked either it runs on LIN and you need to use an oscilloscope to verify there is a bus there or at the very least a multimeter to check the average potential at it, and check the wakeup line to the sensor- which interestingly enough beside a no communication from the DME to the sensor the only other problem the IBS can have is shorting the wake up line however you did not have that because the dashlights turned on where with no wakeup line you will get a flat display minus the MRS light. Another strange thing about the video is you were able to talk to the DME, and logic communication to the DME starts at PT CAN and you aren't actually talking to it through your scan tool it must go into the JBE first. She mentioned she replaced the fuel regulator, housed in the sending unit, which is in left side of the vehicle and if a hose pops off there internal to the tank you will have fuel pressure but it will dump right at the tank, it would have been drastic to amp clamp the fuel pump and verify that you have enough working load on the fuel pump and it's not just being dumped back into the tank. I like your videos but this one was very odd, and nothing you mentioned besides a fuse would have actually repaired the car. Another thing to note is Snap On scan tools will not give you full fault lists, full module accessibility, and misnamed fault codes and I would recommend you find a better scan tool for European vehicles TopDon/Launch and Autel are decent before going to an Autologic or a pirated version of ISTA due to factory ISTA needing a full internet connection which I understand would be difficult in a mobile environment.

      Yeah I have the same vehicle as the video just as a daily, also have a 18’ 340i and ordered a 25 m4
      When I got the 08’s battery changed they never registered it.
      it died after a year and a half and i had two people tell me they couldn’t figure out what was wrong with it both telling me if it wasn’t registered it wouldn’t start, but BMW said that wasn’t the case.
      Bmw sent a technician with a new battery and registered it.
      Hoping this battery doesn’t die within 2 years.

      There's a lot of electrical loads on cars, so the battery has to be monitored for optimal charging and discharging which also vary with temperature and voltage. Also, the system can switch off certain loads when the demand exceeds supply. This is done to reduce fuel consumption and unnecessary wear of alternator and battery.
      Complicated, yes. Useless, no.

      Because they genuinely work. I love the IBS on BMWs, there is still 12 year old E90s will ORIGINAL batteries coming in because of the IBS. There was only one recent model of BMW that murders its batteries and had a software recall. Not only do they very intelligently keep the battery optimal at all times, it with the help of logging in other modules can find parasitic drains and in a more recent chassis can kill individual power terminals overnight to make sure your car will start in the morning. Out of all the mind boggling things BMW has created the IBS is a serious godsend for battery management and other manufacturers took note and are doing it even Chevrolet uses it on at least one model I know of. And of course aside from battery management, the computer controlled alternator can vary it's output depending on user loads which does give you better working horsepower, fuel efficiency, and again longer lasting alternators. Eons ago when I did full European alternator replacements were very common on all brands except BMW, now that I'm all MINI/BMW they are so infrequent it's maybe one every two or three months across all techs in the shop. They killed it with these engineering feats.
