Absolutely wonderful, as all your videos are. But as an Iranian musician, I do have a little comment. Hijâz(kâr)/Chahârgâh is central to Arabic/Iranian music much more in stereotype than in actual fact - it has become the symbol of the music of that region to foreign ears. It actually makes up a fairly small percentage of the working repertoire, and maqâm Bayâti/Shûr family (similar to Western minor, with a microtonally adjusted 2nd and sometimes 4th) is far more widely used in the musical culture. I've had the experience of playing Iranian music for mixed audiences - I can do 40 minutes in Shûr for the Iranians but the second I switch to Chahârgâh, all the white folks in the crowd light up, as if I've just remember how to play our own music.
@@the_monsoon_diaries Exactly, there's an element of exoticism here. I think the reason this scale is so often used to represent the Arab and Persian worlds in the West is that it sounds relatively unfamiliar to Western ears while also being playable without microtonality. It's basically as 'Eastern' as the Western system can get, so it ends up becoming the stereotype.
I've always felt that Raag Yaman and Maqam Al Bayyati are the most mesmerizing ones of both worlds 🖤🎼 and i think Bayyati is the most common in classical Arabic songs, mainly Egyptian.. which we call "Tarab" songs. Hijaz may be the most common one contemporarily
Thanks... I can almost 100% relate with your observations/research.. its rare to find a friendly-teacher with versatile vision.. I have seen many teachers being rigidly imposing hard lessons on poor fellow student.. which subconsciously kills the freedom of thought(ideas doubts blossoming in mind).. Keep discovering & sharing amazing facts !😁🪷🍁💐
A sweet winsome smile, & the prettiest face; a sincere loving heart, we can never replace. We love you most truly, and we always will; you occupy a space, no one else can ever fill.
Anuja ji.. We love your honest efforts to connect Raagdari in Hindustaani Shastriya Gayan with the best of compositions used in indian cinema in a way that we all crave for more always..Salute to your sprit to connect threads and good luck for many more
Anuj ji, it's my first time am watching & listening you and got surprised too. You're so humble and polite plus so knowledgeable person. Your voice is very silky and better than most of Bollywood singers. I became a huge fan of yours! Salute 🙌🙏🙌 to you.
Hi, Great video. Just one thing that I wanted to add, When we talk about Arabic tunes (perticularly the one you are talking about), I think it has more to do with Raag Basant Mukhari or Raag Hijaz than Bhairav or Ahir Bhairav. Infact, the name of Raag Hijaz is directly borrowed from it's Arabic counterpart Maqam Hijaz. Afaik, the tune was brought to India by none other than Amir Khusroo who initially named it as Hijaz. Later, it merged with two other raags, namely, Vakulabharanam from Carnatic and Komal Bhairav from Hindustani classical music and created a new raaga called Basant Mukhari. Just wanted to share this amazing fact with you all. However, you are doing an excellent work. Please keep it up🎉
A wonderful, ecstatic and joyful musical experience,Anuja!I am totally in love with your style and awestruck by your knowledge!Greetings from a sincere admirer Vaidyanathan

Anuja ji, I do appreciate your presentation on Raag Bhairav and Ahir Bhairav, Hindustani, Carnataki and Arabic equivalents, and especially your singing of some relatively newer songs with Arabic flavor.
Dear I'm impressed.... Your presentation, deep analytical skill and super quality of imagination... la jawab.... Feeda ho gaya yaar... Wishing you all the best dear.
Anuja Kamat..... very innovative, informative and interesting content.... you always give your best...love to watch your style of explanation...you are blessed with Saraswati... keep up the good work 😊

Anuja don’t stop creating and posting your content - ever ! I cannot begin to tell you how much I appreciate this! Love your energy and keen observations! ❤ and ✌️

Wah... So nice.. Though i m not from music industry but i always like to listen music.. and you have wonderfully explained the concept.. really nice.. keep it up.. your presentation is very nice... I will never miss watching your videos.. for sure... Thank you.
Hi, from PAkIstan! I am still a die hard fan of " Prince of Persia ". Infact I bought my another new X.T PC (Extended Technology) just to play this game. I also noticed the Raag Bhairav inspired music of this beautiful game in 1990 which I used to play it on my keyboard. Thanks for bringing my nostalgic moments back. Best Regards
Namaskar. Thank you very much for a nice and interesting video on Rag Bhairav. I am a fan of great Lebanese singer Fairouz Rabbani and I have a great collection of her songs. In many of her songs the notes of this rag will be found, e.g. 1 - rama ila arbuda, 2 - kyaa nu ya habibi (same tune of Salilda's - mausam beetaa jaay) 3 - Vainun vainun 4 - bainuk baini asra 5 - Ya ana ya ana an vaiya (same like Salilda's itna na mujhse too pyaar bdha) etc.etc. The list will be too long. All these songs are on you tube, pl. listen. When I was in Bahrain, I have attended her live concert and met her personally. Now she is around 85 or 86. Regards, Shrirang Patwardhan
Very interesting and thanks for the info! Have you heard Marcel Khalife, another Lebanese great? By the way salil da's itna na mujhse tu pyar badha is based on a western composition anyways...
thank you dear sir for your interesting in our great arabic singer Fairuz; as an arab fan of rafi sahab's songs and all old indian singers I can tell you that many of indian composers inspired their songs from arabs composers like brothers rahabani , farid al atrash , mohmmad abdelwahab, yes Fairuz's songs music are very common in indian songs like this one ua-cam.com/video/7E7cN5-5jbE/v-deo.html salam from morocco
Simply mesmerising! I am a (music) layman who love music/songs etc. I did not understand a word of the musical grammar you explained in your video but I enjoyed every word you spoke therein with a "teen in love" fervour and subscribed your channel. Looking forward to watch your next video while trying to delve into the old ones.
Wonderful comparison! I play Sitar, Arabic Oud, and Turkish Saz so this topic is of supreme interest to me! One additional piece of info I can offer is that in Persian/Iranian music the Re and Dha notes in Chahargah (which is similar to Bhairav and Hijazkar) has microtonal placement which is sharper than hindustani komal re and dha. You can see Persian Setar has more frets than Indian Sitar to play these intervals. Also Maqam Zanjiran is equivalent to Raga Nat Bhairav not Ahir Bhairav. The intervals are the same but the starting note is sa instead of ma. Thanks for this nice discussion!
Actually another interesting thing is, Maqams and Carnatic music are somewhat related. Even hindustani in that regard. Because all three music systems implement something called as a quarter tone. And quarter tones are a huge part on why middle eastern music sounds this particular way. In the example of Mayamalavagowla, the carnatic equivalent of bhairav raag, has quarter tones. Or atleast had quarter tones in earlier days. The rishab and dhaivat are flatter than the komal re and komal dha. That makes it super super similar to the middle eastern music scales. With our modern piano, harmonium tunings we cannot play the notes in between the C and C# so we had to let the quarter tones go.
Absolutely interesting and valuable info. Amazing and your effort in multiple attempts in creating the content truly worth it. Appreciate your knowledge and sharing - video is collection worthy... a MUST share... Keep up the good (read that as great) work ...
i love it ....the way u explained ...... hats off .... And of course Ahir Bherav is one of my favorite raags ..... but the information u gave about Arabic music is worth listening ...Stay bless ❤
namaste Anuja ji… such a #breeze to see your new Video.. missed it for long ! please keep it coming 🙏🙏 needless to say… a big fan of you… the bilaskaniTodi video… i have lost count of no of times i have heard it. you are truly #blessed by #mAsaraswati
Blessings, How come your pronunciation is so perfect for both Hindi and Arabic Persian words. Now a days even Arabs can not pronounce Qaaf ق this perfect.
in some arabic dialect especially egyptian dialect Qaaf is pronounced as Aaa , in yemen they pronouced it as Gaaf, but in the rest of arab countries حرف القاف is Qaaf salam from morocco
Great to see you back! Make a video explaining how exactly arabic style of singing differs from Indian style of singing. It is of course easily recognizable but can't pinpoint why.
Absolutely wonderful, as all your videos are. But as an Iranian musician, I do have a little comment. Seems like these modern bollywood songs like Allah Duhai, Dard e disco are more arabic, didn’t know its using Bhairaav!
Excellent presentation! Nice singing, appropriate content, easy and natural flow. keep it up!
