On a different matter, the Facebook link you provided appears to be broken or something of that nature. It does not work when I click on it. You may want to copy/paste it again. This one here looks the same but it does connect with your FB page: facebook.com/anujakamatofficial/
Or, instead of "Facebook page link" reduce that to just "Facebook:". The actual link is not complete.

This is such a gem of a video. Often times ordinary people cannot appreciate classical music because the renowned singers don't make any effort to reach ordinary listeners like me. The biggest problem is lyrics are subpar and more often than not you cannot even make out the words when they are singing. I can only appreciate so much of their layakari and alaps with my untrained ear. If they were to explain the moods of each raaga they are singing and demonstrate it using well known songs it will go long way in attracting young people towards classical music. The young generations still listens to bollywood classics from 50s/60s many of which have strong classical base. So why not present those songs in a classical concert instead of a thumri or tarana.
That's why I always liked instrumental classic music but not vocal. Only after I found your channel I got to understand basics of classical music and now I have started enjoying vocal as well. Honestly without your channel it would have never happened. Thank You!
Seriously Anuja you are "Murti lahan pan kirti mahan". (For non-marathi readers the phrase literally means "your achievements are way ahead of your age". Please keep learning and sharing. We all have great expectations from you.

Bang on. I have felt the same. While I won't say that I have great command on the language but the fact that these singers paid no attention to pronounce the words in an understandable way makes me feel sad. Their reach got reduced only because of this simple yet a profound flaw.

And I hope your character will give credit for his knowledge and skill to Indian Classical music? We are so sick of appropriation and the separation of the spiritual aspect of all knowledge so appropriated. Knowledge should be shared but also given credit where credit is due. Just saying.

    • @LadyWervyn
      @LadyWervyn 4 роки тому +10

@@andalaiyar4457 I'm so sorry, I bet it gets very old seeing it misrepresented! I will say that my book is a fantasy novel set in the early 1400s in a world I'm creating, so there is no actual India, though the place where the character lives is supposed to be an analog for India. But I'm trying to be as culturally sensitive about the topics I don't know as much about, as I learn about different countries in their own "medieval times" all over the world!
And if I ever write about where my inspiration comes from, I will definitely give credit, including for this! It's such a beautiful tradition and I want to make sure I respect it!
As I haven't gotten to that book in the story yet, I haven't thought too deeply about it, but running it by an Indian person who actually knows about raags would be a good idea!

Every shades of music should be welcomed. Classical music will always be there and one should not fear its demise. A dynamic multicultural society like ours will have many colors and that’s the beauty our country. Inclusiveness is our strength and it should be promoted. Narrow mindedness will stagnate our culture.

Anuja kamat, your face is so friendly, beautiful and expressive... I love to watch you teach and hear your excellent command of melody, depicting emotion and passion so precisely even though I have no idea what you are saying. And though I am not a student of music, I am delighted and impressed with your nuance in notes that are not used in most western music.
I sing, create lyrics and play freestyle, impromptu melodies on the guitar but I can't read music so it is only by ear. I would feel it a pleasing experience and accomplishment to be able to control my voice even a fraction as well as you.

and yes the original is on youtube which is sung by a classical male singer if you want to listen the high notes - ua-cam.com/video/0qpIQygF-VQ/v-deo.html

Anuja you by far are one of the most brilliantly expressive singer I have ever seen. Your body language encapsulates the soul and essence of a Raag just as much as your vocal chords do. Your eyes too trodd upon the intervalic path of a scale just as much as your voice do. I bet you could just sit back in silence and I'll know it by the smile that its Bihag or by the restless motion of your eyes that its sohni. The passivity of your shoulders when its Bhervi. Khuda apko aur ap k ustaad ko khush aur salamat rakhay. Aameen.

I also faced same difficulty earlier I can't play without searching the notes now i can find any song's notes just within 2-3 miniutes and that too by trial and error method main difficulty is the starting notes after that you can play in flow it automatically comes in mind.

Hey, so I found your channel through a video created by a Western musician named Adam Neely. I feel like this video specifically explains the concept of "Raag" in a way that I as a Westerner can understand. I'm REALLY intrigued by this concept because I'm interested in how the voice can express parts of the human condition that aren't easily translated into "semantic" language. That said, Westerners have been ATTEMPTING to emulate Indian classical music for at the VERY least half a century, and most of them don't really do the best job of it. If I as a Westerner were attempting to compose with Raag, what should I know going into it so that I can give the Raags the respect they deserve? Is this even something I should attempt?

Find a guru (master) who can teach u classical Indian music/Or at the least basics if it.
And dont fall for Indians in the western countries, most of them are like Bikram Yogi (if u know what I mean).
In India, there are families who just impart music from one generation to another, such families are called "gharana".

This was really fun to learn! I’m very new to understanding Raagas, and this was a really helpful side-by-side comparison. One thing that peaked my curiosity: you mentioned about how different Raagas evoke different moods, hence how you can sing the same words with a different raag. Is there more of a connection between the words and the chosen raag (like when rewriting Mary had a little lamb from major to minor, the rhythm and melodic contour is consciously maintained, and only lowering the third when it’s sung) or is it more like a theme/variations, where the melodies can be closely or loosely correlated? Great video!

Do you think the mood of a song can just be changed by changing the raga? How about the words? Shouldn't the lyrics also play a big role in creating the mood? I think the song was created for dance which required fast movement and singing matching with the songs. Raga Bihag and Bhairavi will not match with the lyrics and dance.

I am not pro Hindustani classical but listen to his gonre and try to understand.
Great fan of you and like your all videos.
You very well explain when you say 'ye shudha Ma hai'. This gives very good reference of swar.
I listen to Bhairavi quite often and try understand the mood of bhairavi but didn't get it at all. But today when I listen to your explanation I draw a picture like 'now the lover has become bairagi and he not attached to his lover but still he is praising his lover by not attaching to her'. So only now I understood the mood of Bhairavi. Hats off to your explanation.

Raag bairagi doesn't contain komal gandhar and komal dhaibat....but these soft and painful notes represent the 'bairagi' mood better I think, so Bhairavi is best for the situation according to me.
