I respect Volunteer McMahon for speaking honestly. (I've met the man, we agree upon some things, deeply disagree upon others...) What Patrick/Packy doesn't dwell on in this interview (though he mentions it briefly) is that in recent years he has been involved in 'cross community' initiatives involving ex-volunteers who were involved in Loyalist para-military activities. These efforts are an attempt to find a certain 'common ground' among ex-para militaries on both sides of the issue in order to promote understanding and a peaceful way forward for Northern Ireland. Anybody, whatever their conviction, involved in such a process is to be commended. (Many 'hard-liners' on both sides disapprove of such initiatives. Happily, those people are in the minority.) I read in some of the comments below that people doubt McMahon's account or even his sincerity. I don't and can't speak for the man, but he largely doesn't speak here about his long struggle with addiction (following his 6 years in prison) and the problems associated with addiction and recovery. It's very clear that his experiences contributed to this pattern of addiction. He has been damaged, both physically and yes, mentally by the experience of addiction. (All addicts have, I know, I'm one...) I wish him well in continued recovery. To those that doubt the veracity of his interview I will simply say this: He didn't get jailed for nothing. (Unlike some!!!) He was a volunteer. I think that The Good Listener podcast is to be commended for allowing such voices, (FROM ALL SIDES!) to be heard. (The interviewer does a fantastic job...) As Packy says in his final statement, "Go nEiri An Bothar Leat." (In the Irish language, this literally means, "May The Road Rise With You".) Not that I celebrate the 12th of July, but when in the first few minutes and I heard the host / presenter displaying his lack of knowledge of the 12th of July, and the significance of it, his lack of self awareness of his own ignorance of the history of the war does not hinder his over confidence in doing a You Tube. Quite astonishing.

Question for the interviewer: you’ve done a lot of these with IRA members and British soldiers. Are you starting to get the impression that the British soldiers are better human beings? The IRA lot are coming across as common criminals who if it weren’t for the troubles would have been in prison anyway for something else.
I commend Packy for reaching out to the loyalist side trying to understand his enemies perspective and worldview.That takes courage and the wisdom of life a need to understand the what’s and whys of his life narrative.Whatever the conflict if a solution can be found peacefully if lessons from war can be learned by future generations conflict resolution without armed force by diplomacy dialogue just May be possible.
During the Troubles (late 1960s to late 1990s), the 12th July was often accompanied by riots and paramilitary violence. In 1972, three people were shot dead in Portadown and two people were killed in Belfast. Of the five in total, two were killed by Republican groups and three were killed by Loyalist groups.
