  • Brendan Hughes (not to be confused with the deceased Brendan ‘The Dark” Hughes) shares his truly extraordinary life story, a life shaped by his membership of the East-Tyrone PIRA in the early days of the conflict in the North.
Brendan tells us about his time ambushing British soldiers in the countryside and robbing banks to fund raise for the IRA and his thoughts on having to take human life for his cause. Brendan shares the incredible story of how masterminded the second ever prison escape involving a helicopter on Halloween 1973 and how he himself ended up leading a 19 man jailbreak from Ireland’s most secure lock-up.
His tale later involves a split form the movement and a team of assassins being spent to NYC to take out Brendan, one of whom Brendan would later meet.

As a former British soldier, I very much enjoyed Brendans stories and his honesty and I never fail to consider what it was all about. I grew up in West Belfast and as a young child lived in what was a "mixed" area, not that I knew back then what that was, but my elderly mother still describes how my best friend and I were distraught when a failed state dictated that we couldn't go to the same primary school because of "religion", which again neither knew what that was. I refuse to believe after the loss of so many lives that any current politician enters that particular sphere of employment for anything other than monetary gain. Regardless of my belonging to a particular faith and my extensive service in the military, I have not, nor ever allowed it my most sincere and solemn trust in all and I hope my actions in the past and the present bear true testament to that. Thanks for sharing this series.

Wow…. Just wow.. as a local lad in Dublin City, listening to the “helicopter song” and many more from the Wolfe tones, knowing Mountjoy (surroundings lol) .. and this is the man who made that happen?
I’m absolutely chuffed he’s still alive and I’m more chuffed i heard the real story from the horses mouth ……
    100% buying the book…

Irish Republicans of intelligence understand the world and history more than anyone. British Jew American colonisers have opened the gates of Africa with their murder and mayhem. Thats why we have the current problems with migrants.

    •  Місяць тому

Why? Tell us more about the invasion.

I can't remember if he already answered this question. Why did the guards not shoot at the helicopter when it landed in the prison yard? Or did they shoot? They couldn't have known the pilot was a hostage. I can't think of why they wouldn't try to shoot the helicopter down
